Jets lose Bryan Thomas for season

2011 AFC Championship: New York Jets v Pittsburgh Steelers Getty Images

The Jets will lose one of the most durable players in the NFL for the rest of the season.

The team announced that starting outside linebacker Bryan Thomas will not play again this year after an Achilles injury on Sunday night. Thomas has only missed three games in his ten year career, all with the Jets.

Thomas isn’t a flashy player, but he’s a smart veteran who understands what Rex Ryan is trying to accomplish on defense.  Aaron Maybin figures to stick in New York now and possibly get more snaps with Thomas out.

The Jets’ biggest problem on defense is their pass rush and this won’t help matters.

important loss, he wasn’t going to help the pass rush but he’s great against the run.

Westermann will have to step up on running downs and Maybin on passing downs.

This is another body blow to our team. While not a star Thomas is solid against the run and can rush the passer on the occaison. While i like what Maybin brings to the table in terms of speed he is a liability against the run.

We need Mangold back or it is going to be another long week vs the Pats.

Jets are paying for losing Kendall, Fanaeca, and Woody off the line the past few years and not replacing them. Slauson is average, Hunter shouldnt be a starter and Ducasse is down right horrible looks like a bust. Baxter isnt awful but u cant expect a rookie free agent to be starting right now.

9-7 and no playoffs is looking like a real possibility…We need to save our season next week!!

GR states, “The Jets’ biggest problem on defense is their pass rush and this won’t help matters.”

I agree with the first part, but maybe having Aaron Maybin on the field more may help the pass rush. Bryan Thomas was a reliable OLB, but he was no pass rusher. Maybin looked pretty good during preseason (surprised he was released) and looked pretty sharp against the Ravens. On his first play of the night, he was all over Flacco, and although he slipped and didn’t get the sack, he disrupted the play and broke up a 3rd down. He obviously had the strip sack later on, so that’s 2 nice places in a very few snaps.

So, maybe with any luck, having Maybin on the field more might help the pass rush.

The only teams I’d ever smile when their players go down…are the jets and Raiders.

jet fans especially….always cheer when others’ good players are lost…so enjoy this one.

Lets see what jets do this week…to attract attention to themselves.

If the Jets are pinning their hopes on Aaron Maybin it is bad, really, really bad.

Maybin is a complete liability against the run. Complete and total. Average left tackle will outweigh him by at least 60 pounds.

In pass rush he has one move: he sprints as fast as he can trying to get edge. If that does not work he runs past the play and QB can slide into the gaping maw that he just made on Left side of offense. Most of the time though, because he has overrun the play so badly, Qb just feels a bit of a breeze as he goes whizzing by.

    Jets are in trouble.

This Jets / Pats game may very well determine wild card or AFC East winner. Buffalo is not going away, and they have the easiest schedule. I love me some Pats, but their D is without a rudder in the secondary (and now the linebackers), and 6 or 7 losses is possible for them, too, with their schedule.

I’m not hoping injury on anyone. In fact I certainly HOPE Sanchez is upright and throwing the ball a lot this week! Go Pats!

Uhhh doesn’t ” most durable” mean more the 4 games?? Just sayin

Are you saying that Brady and Welker are licking Bryan Thomas’ lips?

    Not good.

The Jets biggest problem are the refs, right Jets fans?

The Jets have never in their history lost a game when it wasn’t the refs fault. Those darn old refs have kept you from winning for the past 43 years. Maybe Roger (Former Jet Employee) Goodell should invetigate. It’s just not right that year after year the Jets are treated like crap. Must be a conspiracy. Oh well……………..

HUGE LOL at btowngetsdown thing maybin will help the pass rush!!! As a Bill’s fan I really do hope they are pinning their hopes on him!!
Just think, maybe he can get his first ever sack sometime this year!

  16. catquick says: Oct 4, 2011 1:36 AM

Maybin can be thrown aside by a LT with one quick slap. You’ll have to do better than that Rex.

billsin20xx….Maybin had a sack in Balt…but cant expect a Bills fan to do some research before he talks crap

  18. billsin20xx says: Oct 4, 2011 8:37 AM

Sorry, I missed that one – what happened did the qb run out of bounds in front of him? 1st rouNd pick, two years experience, and he finally gets a sack!
But I’m sure he will do great for the jets – his strong point is he has quick feet – Rex must love him!!!
