Michael Vick backs out of radio show

San Francisco 49ers v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Michael Vick was scheduled to host a show this season on Monday nights on WIP in Philadelphia.

Two weeks ago, he couldn’t make it because he suffered a concussion the night before.  Last week, he was a no-show for some ill-defined reason.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Vick will no longer participate in the show moving forward despite having helped promote the show before the season.  Vick did the show once.

The “Chickie and Pete’s Players Lounge” rolled on Monday night and didn’t explain why Vick wasn’t there. Clay Harbor replaced Vick.

Look, we’re not saying this is front page news.  But it’s fair to wonder ask: Would Vick have dropped out of the Monday night show if the Eagles were 3-1 instead of 1-3?

Vick overcame years away from the game to become a top quarterback again last year. But now he faces a different sort of adversity, losing five of his last six starts dating back to last year.

How Vick responds to this new challenge will be one of the stories of this NFL season.

it’s Chickie’s and Pete’s. not sure where you got Chuckie’s from.

The 1-3egles can’t even complete a full radio show!!

But to be honest Mike Vick has totally looked like he was worth a $100,000,000 contract. I mean he has that offense clicking and running like a machine.

And Nnamdi…wow. I was wrong to call him over rated and over hyped. Did you see the way Steven Jackson out ran him week 1? or the way Victor Cruz’d to the endzone after a routine tackle attempt by #24 week 3?

The Redskins are going to rip Vick’s helmet off with his head still attached.

    CRYYYY, Iggles, CRYYYYY!!!!!!

  7. drmonkeyarmy says: Oct 3, 2011 6:36 PM

I wouldn’t want to host a show where the primary questions are going to be whether he thinks various coaches should be fired. And I’m assuming you meant Chickie and Pete’s not Chucky and Pete’s.

Love all the eagles stories. I know the Eagle are only 1-3, buy history shows that most philadelphia fans call for Reids head in September and October, but praise him in december for yet again winning the division. Wish my fellow Philly fans would grow up and realize Reids greatness. Funny how all those people calling for Reid to go and keep McNabb with a new head coach suddenly disappeared. Howd that work out? Riiiiiiiiight. Reid is a genuis who let McNabb go at the right time. Just ask Redskins and Viking fans.

  10. moochzilla says: Oct 3, 2011 6:37 PM

Would Vick have dropped out of the show if he weren’t in a body bad every Monday because of the crappy line play and offensive system?

    Probably not.

I can’t get production out of my employees on Mondays, and they didn’t even play in the games. They just watched them on TV while throwing back 18 Coors Lites.

Please, it was doing a 0.1 anyway.

    —————–

Nyet. Their offense is decidedly average to below average and is not likely to get better. Good defense, but they get a crapload of penalties. The Cowboys D is as good or better. The Cowboys O is way better, even as crippled as it has been but they are about to get a lot healthier. Austin will be back, Bryant’s thigh issues should be gone, Felix’s shoulder gets rest, Scandrick should be back and Romo’s a couple more weeks away from that rib thing. The Patriots will be another great test for them.

That said, the Giants are the best team in the NFCE right now They’re just playing better than everybody else.

  30. marshawnlynchlookslikepredator says: Oct 3, 2011 7:13 PM

On second thought, I would go to Chuckie’s and Pete’s. As long as Chuckie is Jon Gruden, and he praises my eating and drinking abilities like he praises every player in the NFL on MNF.

    ————————

Reid had a good run early on but the Eagles have won the division only once in the last four seasons so let’s not act like they’ve been owning it lately with that “yet again” talk. The team they are putting on the field right now is vastly different from those teams of the early and mid 2000′s and the biggest difference is no Jim Johnson.

You ever hear people from the Philly area speak? That hideous accent puts people in Alabama to shame.

  37. phillybirds says: Oct 3, 2011 7:39 PM

Maybe Vick is too stressed and tired from carrying this team on his back? Andy Reid gets all the credit for keeping this team “competitive” through a 1-3 start. But it’s Michael Vick taking the hits, breaking out of the sacks, and turning bad plays into touchdowns. McCoy would do the same if he got the ball more.

  38. rugdaniels says: Oct 3, 2011 7:40 PM

Kind of a no-win situation for Vick here. If he does the radio show Eagles’ fans would be screaming that he should be worrying about winning and not his radio show. This is probably the right move, what’s to gain for Vick going on the air? He didn’t live up to the obligation he made to the station but I can see why he backed out.

  39. alexnexus says: Oct 3, 2011 7:41 PM

“But it’s fair to wonder ask: Would Vick have dropped out of the Monday night show if the Eagles were 3-1 instead of 1-3?”

Of Course not! Use common sense please. If you are having problems in your job -or job related issues emerge- is time to lose the hobbies, minor compromises, and f-o-c-u-s. Don’t you?

“Vick overcame years away from the game to become a top quarterback again last year. But now he faces a different sort of adversity, losing five of his last six starts dating back to last year.”

  48. laeaglefan says: Oct 3, 2011 8:39 PM

The Eagles are imploding this year and Vick can’t handle it. There is lots of blame to go around, but Vick certainly needs to accept his share. His turnovers have certainly not helped things. If thjngs keeps going like this, Andy Reid is going to blow up at one of his news conferences and he’ll be called out on it by Jeff Lurie. Look for Reid to resign at the end of the season.

  49. valman61 says: Oct 3, 2011 8:45 PM

I’m a diehard giants fan and I love nothing more than the eagles failing and Vick imploding, but let’s be honest here. Michael Vick is not the Eagles problem. His comments have been that of a frustrated qb and rightfully so. He threw for 400 yds and ran for 75 yds, it’s not his fault his kicker missed 2 fgs and his rb made the worst decision in history on the goal line. They’re problems are line play and coaching, if not for Vick they’d be getting blown out every week.

Vick was raised with poor values and I’m guessing that certain principles were never taught to him. I’m thinking that one of those is that you honor your commitments. He’s been blowing off interviews, charity events and sports talk shows like this for years. It’s nothing new and it is just another illustration of his low character. His handlers and public image consultants can only mask the truth so much and for so long. Ultimately if you’re a low life you will do and say things that confirm you are a low life.

  54. bigbirdsfan says: Oct 3, 2011 9:24 PM

Although i am a Falcons fan I am curious to see where all you Cowboys, Redskins and Giant fans will be when Andy rights the ship somehow again and wins another division leaving you all wondering what the hell happened. I read all the same stuff for the past 3 years. You are all way overdoing it for 4 games into the season. These guys will gel at 6 weeks and that is about the time they will be playing their division (ah huh) rivals. I am fairly certain Andy is going to let Nnamdi play man coverage, DRC will be covering tight ends and Asante will be burned once a game but still end the year with 5 picks. The D line may set an NFL record for sacks. Glad i am in a division where people know football and know that the season doesn’t start until the 6th week. This website has become a joke. Especially love all the steelers ring people…now they have problems. The eagles unfortunately will win the division and ruin my teams chances of getting past round 2. The giants, redskins and cowboys are at least 2-3 years away…and by then Romo, Eli and don’t even get me started on grossman will be old and decrepit….

  55. iamwhodat says: Oct 3, 2011 9:30 PM

Oh, I get it since he’s Michael Vick he deserves to get all the sh** you people throw at him. I’m willing to bet if YOUR Qb was 30-46 416 yds 2td 1int with 75 yds on the ground you would back him 100 percent… but since he’s Mike Vick…. you know the rest.

Vick was on his best behavior…now that he’s the $100 million man the “old” (AKA Real) Vick is showing up more and more. He’s still a punk who got his rocks off by torturing dogs, and still a punk who wants to blame anyone but himself (the ref’s, his teammates, blah blah). A true leader of a football team doesn’t act like Vick has the past few weeks. I’ll be shocked if the Eagles see a good return on their investment.

  60. djstat says: Oct 3, 2011 10:14 PM

Probably thought that he was sending the wrong message to teammates by appearing on a radio show while the team’s fortunes are declining. Guess he thinks he is demonstrating leadership by focusing on football. This team has so much more wrong with it than the quarterback play. Linebacker, safety, offensive line, offensive line coach as DC, boneheaded plays, and disappointing play from all but two of those high priced FAs.

  73. TheDPR says: Oct 4, 2011 9:46 AM

That “top quarterback” kind of got me, too. If by “top quarterback” you mean “top half of the league” then ok, he’s always been a top QB. But he’s never been a winner in the sense of taking over a game and carrying your team to victory in the clutch against an equally-motivated opponent.

I have said it since his college days, it isn’t that he doesn’t want to win or that he lacks drive. He simply isn’t intelligent enough to read what’s going on around him, whether it be the defensive scheme against him, the motivational needs of his teammates, his own weaknesses that he needs to work on, etc.

He’s a great athlete with good instincts and a good arm. He just doesn’t have the intangibles required of a championship QB carrying a team with a bad OL (and they really suck this season).
