On second thought: Jets will go back to “ground and pound” approach

Jets head coach Rex Ryan argues a call with referee Mike Carey during their game against the Ravens in Baltimore Reuters

We wrote last week about how the Jets have gone away from their run first philosophy.

Rex Ryan didn’t dispute the notion, and the numbers backed it up. Last night’s beatdown in Baltimore has Ryan thinking differently.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com writes that Ryan was “furious” in Monday’s team meeting and promised the team they would return to a “ground and pound” approach.

The great philosopher Mike Tyson once said that everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth.  The Jets were cold cocked last night and want to go back to basics.

“We have to be able to run the football better. We built this team to be able to run the football,” Ryan said at his press conference.

Asked if they will change personnel, Ryan was resolute:  “How about we give Shonn Green a chance?”

Ryan also stressed the need to protect Mark Sanchez, saying the quarterback wouldn’t last the season if they keep letting him get hit.  No matter what the approach is, it’s clear the Jets will be fired up for Sunday’s game in Foxborough.

“This is huge. This is the team we have to beat. No offense to Buffalo,” Ryan said.

HOW CAN YOU GROUND AND POUND OR THROW THE BALL WITH NO FREAKIN’ LINE?

    URGGGGGGGGGH!!!!!!!!!!

  2. sromgrom says: Oct 3, 2011 6:59 PM

Yes Rex, no offense to the team that already did the job for you…..and make no mistake, Buffalo will be ready for you guys in a few weeks.. They’re not the same ole pushovers from last season—Regardless of the minor hiccup in Cincy..

Yep cause the Raiders sure proved that worked.

Patriots can’t rush the passer. Tell Sanchize to grow a pair and play!

  7. herlies says: Oct 3, 2011 7:04 PM

There are rookie QBs who have progressed more in 4 games than Sanchez has in 3 years.

Better to run the ball 3 times for 7 yards and punt it away safely than it is to have hot dog boy back there waiting to give the ball away.

  8. dburgoyne says: Oct 3, 2011 7:04 PM

You might as well pound that backup center…what a mess. Good luck scoring points to keep up with the Patriots and the Bills.

Shonn Green on most other teams would be an unknown, he would be so far off the radar it’s not even funny… same with Mark Sanchez, put both of these guys in Cincy, Tampa Bay, Carolina, KC, etc etc…. Nobody talks about them…. put them on the Jets and Mark Sanchez is the franchise and Shonn Green is the answer at getting back to ground and pound… everything and everyone is bigger in New York even if they’re not.

Sanchez and Shonn Greene are both overrated. Maybe the Jets should bring in the Ravens Defense to play offense for them.

  22. tucknrolle says: Oct 3, 2011 7:18 PM

It’s hard to run the ball when your o-line can’t get a push. They should be a run first offense with their QB situation, but they need to get the big guys up front to perform if they wish to do that.

  23. antshaw says: Oct 3, 2011 7:19 PM

  24. favreforever says: Oct 3, 2011 7:21 PM

  25. redrifle14 says: Oct 3, 2011 7:21 PM

LOL. Of course they are going back to pounding the rock, cause they have the worse QB in the NFL. They should trade for Orton, he would be a massive upgrade, & he sucks.

  26. infectorman says: Oct 3, 2011 7:22 PM

gotta credit the fatman for knowing when to change the strategy and not being afraid to ostensibly admit his mistakes.
And he’s right! the road to the championship will run the Foxboro this year. Mark it.

(Sorry Bills – eeking out a W at home against a September-Patriot-defense is not all that impressive. Beat us in Foxboro and you’ll be on to something)

  27. ravenator says: Oct 3, 2011 7:22 PM

It’s ok Rex, no one blames you. I’d give the ‘ground and pound’ a rest too if I were playing the Ravens.

  28. gadgetdawg says: Oct 3, 2011 7:24 PM

I don’t really know the Jets well but judging by what I saw last night they need to fix that oline. If they want to pass they have to give the QB more than 3 seconds to read and pass.

Running would likely help but you will not win if you can not pass in this league.

  29. rodneyharrisonstruckstick says: Oct 3, 2011 7:24 PM

  30. caseyanthonymunoz says: Oct 3, 2011 7:25 PM

  31. geniusfan says: Oct 3, 2011 7:28 PM

Looks like the NFL is really in for it now!

Especially considering Shonn Greene’s gaudy 3.0 YPC to go along with a bottom five NFL offensive line.

The Jets will be fired up the Patriots will also be fired up it is a rivalry after all Rosenthal. This is a revenge game for the Pats the Jets better be a lot more than fired up.

This is great news for the Patriots, Bills, Chargers, Ravens, and Texans. The Jets are built to win games played 25 years ago. That style simply won’t work in today’s NFL.

  40. vahawker says: Oct 3, 2011 7:43 PM

He really think he could have run any kind of ground and pound against the Ravens?

Next week they face a bad NE defense, but will still get lit up by Brady and Co. Another beat in the cards Rex.

The Patriots can really put the jets in their place this weekend, then you will see the real make up of this all talk, no action team.

“No offense to Buffalo”? Miami just got some bulletin-board material. Great move, Wrecks.

  46. frankiefiveangels says: Oct 3, 2011 8:21 PM

This is a smokescreen. The Patriots are horrendous against the pass, and I’m a Pats fan. They have zero pass rush and can’t cover anybody. They made Chad Henne and Jason Campbell look like Dan Marino and Ken Stabler. If that fat buffoon insists on running the ball he is not the coach I (grudgingly) think he is. Ryan has outcoached Belichick before but I think the hoodie stages a comeback this week if Ryan stops throwing against this defense.

  47. gpete1962 says: Oct 3, 2011 8:21 PM

Jets should mail it in and rest Sanchize’s nose.

  83. stanklepoot says: Oct 4, 2011 7:43 AM

Rex seems to be forgetting one big truth. In order to rely on a ground and pound offense, you need two things: a quality RB and a dominating O-line. Greene can put in a decent performance every so often, but he’s far from a reliable option. LT can still flash some brilliance from time to time, but he wears down quickly. As for the O-line: big Vlad seems like a big bust so far, they still haven’t found a good replacement for the retired Damien Woody, and Mangold was the one thing keeping that line from completely falling apart. Having said that, it’s not like this O-line is doing all that well at pass blocking either, and Sanchez certainly isn’t someone I’d want to carry my team on a regular basis. Let’s face it, the Jets are going to have to win a lot of games with their defense.

  84. richm2256 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:55 AM

  85. jetters149 says: Oct 4, 2011 9:00 AM

They are 2-2 big deal they never said they were going to go 16-0 Ohhh they are 2-2 press the panic button, give me a break they have been playing awful and still one game out. Not like the fish they are out of it and you can count on buffalo chocking all we have to do is bet the over rated patriots. We did many times before and we will do it again. This time we will have the home game in the playoffs. And everybody knows that we can go on runs late in the season. So let dirty Sanchez, fat, foot and what ever you people can come up with fly now, cause come December you will have nothing to make fun of. 86. richm2256 says: Oct 4, 2011 9:19 AM

While anything could happen, I’m not very worried about this Patriot’s offense against a Yet’s defense that looks pretty mediocre this year. Brady is lighting up some supposedly solid defenses; averaging about 34 PPG against Miami, Bufallo, San Diego and Oakland.

While their defense is a complete disaster so far, the good news is that the Yet’s offense looks just as bad as the Patriot’s defense.

Don’t think it’s going to be a walk in the park for the Yet’s this Sunday.

The jets need to shut up and play. Usually when when coaches and players talk trash and talk themselves up its AFTER big wins or AFTER they’ve proven how good they are in the W/L column. Seems like the Jets have taken the reverse approach to this and they look dumb.

Their traditional aggressive and strong defense we’re used to seeing that constantly has bailed Sanchez out of his horrible play has obviously faltered and just plain isn’t that good. Sanchez is such a grossly overrated QB and I just cannot understand why. He is so careless with the ball, misfires to wide open receivers and turns the ball over in the most boneheaded ways but then the defense bails him out by handing him the ball inside the opponent 20 yard line and we remember the GQ pretty boy and he gets some kind of weird free pass. Ridiculous, Sanchez is just bad QB, period.

The Jets D has been exposed big time in every game played this year(minus the Jags game)…..27, 34, and 34 pts against in the other games.

And Jets fans “can’t wait to play the Pats this weekend” ?? Uhm, good luck.
