Namath again lays into Jets

Joe Namath AP

The man who led the New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl III is not done ripping this year’s version of the Jets.

Joe Namath, who last week said Rex Ryan has made the team too cocky, this week said G.M. Mike Tannenbaum has done a bad job in the draft, especially on the offensive line, where 2010 second-round pick Vlad Ducasse hasn’t worked out as expected.

“I’m not sure what’s going on there,” Namath said on ESPN 1050, via the New York Post. “We picked some poor players and we’re not owning up to it. That’s what it amounts to. You’ve got guys on the roster who have been picked and you keep trying to say, ‘OK, they’re going to work out.’ Well, guess what? We tried that with [Vernon] Gholston and it didn’t work out. You have to [say], ‘Hey, I made a bad pick, a bad selection,’ and move on. The Jets didn’t do that and it’s a little late for the season to get it righted.”

But while Namath criticized the Jets’ offensive line, he also criticized Jets receiver Santonio Holmes for telling reporters after Sunday’s game that the line needs to do a better job of protecting Mark Sanchez.

“That was a mistake, it surely was,” Namath said. “For Holmes, as a captain, to go outside, to the media, and start pointing fingers. . . . I mean, he’s right about the ball getting out late to him [on Sanchez’s third-quarter interception], and he’s right about the offensive line, but that can create a problem in the locker room. . . . That divisiveness can bury a team. They’ve got to correct that right away.”

Namath isn’t necessarily wrong in his criticisms, but he is running the risk of sounding like his criticisms are personal. No one likes to hear the old guy talk about how things were different “back in my day,” and that’s what Namath is starting to sound like.

Nobody cares what this old drunk has to say.. He knows nothing about today’s football…

  2. joetoronto says: Oct 4, 2011 7:13 AM

I don’t think it sounds personal at all, the man is a Jet through and through.

    At least he cares.

  3. josh928 says: Oct 4, 2011 7:19 AM

Hes right though. Jets have looked like complete garbage the last 2 weeks yet Rex still wants to say they’re the greatest team ever assembled.

“No one likes to hear the old guy talk about how things were different “back in my day,” and that’s what Namath is starting to sound like.”

Namath is not saying that at all. You’re reading into it incorectly.
He is pointing out the devisivness in Holmes’s comments.
The offensive line could point out that Holmes should run better routes, catch more balls, react better to blitzes…etc.

Namath has a right to speak about his former team.

This is the quitessential TEAM sport.

  5. samoanjungle says: Oct 4, 2011 7:23 AM

Joe is just keeping it real. Maybe he should start his own NYC radio sports talk show.

  6. Jason says: Oct 4, 2011 7:24 AM

Joe, people paid more attention to your criticism of the Jets when you said things like “I could care less if the Jets are strug-a-ling. I want to kiss you.” Leave it at that.

  7. tiffpats4eva says: Oct 4, 2011 7:25 AM

I HATE the jets. I won’t even capitalize their name.

However, Namath should back off a bit. Let Rex run his team the way he sees fit.

  8. cjspiller12 says: Oct 4, 2011 7:26 AM

Most overrated QB in the history of the game. He should never be in the Hall of Fame. Only reason he is there is because of the prediction. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe he is the only QB in the Hall that has more INT’s than TD’s. The guy was an average NFL QB.

  9. steelerfan999 says: Oct 4, 2011 7:37 AM

HES JUST SAYING WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE IS THINKING.ONLY HE GETS TO SAY IT ON THE RADIO,WE DONT.

  10. PFTiswhatitis says: Oct 4, 2011 7:39 AM

WRONG, MDS! Namath is a true Jet. He cares and he does not need to sugar coat things the way the organization likes to do (ala Gholston).

  11. CKL says: Oct 4, 2011 7:40 AM

He’s right. What’s ironic is he was the ultimate “look at me” hollywood type guy as a player and made a c*cky guarantee so one would think he would be the last guy to make a comment like that.

Holmes’ comments are one reason I HATE coaches selecting captains (in the hopes of their living up to it??) instead of the players themselves doing it. He’s always been an immature punk.

  12. scudbot says: Oct 4, 2011 7:41 AM

I disagree. What he has to say seems like fairly sound advice. If you’re a Jets fan who isn’t still swooning to whatever Ryan has to say, you recognize that the team is off-kilter. Maybe it takes a shot across the bow to start to get the ship righted. The problems aren’t new this year. Telling your team that it’s better than the Super Bowl champs when you got shut out by them at home isn’t helpful unless you’re just trying to sell tickets.

  13. ampats says: Oct 4, 2011 7:47 AM

Namath speaks the truth. The draft has been mediocre at best.
    2010
Wilson- Nickel or dime back at best
    DuCasse- BUST
    McKnight- special teams player

and then S Holmes(wakenbake) throws the O line under the bus.

When this team loses on Sunday , get ready for the implosion The jets have no depth so any injury will sink this team as it the finger pointing has already started.

CANT WAIT for Sunday at 4:15

  16. gregeer says: Oct 4, 2011 7:48 AM

I guess he’s including Sanchez as one of those poor picks. He was God awful on Sunday night against the Ravens. He’s being shown to be a fraud now that the team isn’t capable of carrying him.

  17. nevin999 says: Oct 4, 2011 7:54 AM

Namath is a fossil that doesn’t seem to know that he is completely irrelevant today. Didn’t he win the Super Bowl when triceratops were shambling around the Earth?

  18. clavette says: Oct 4, 2011 7:59 AM

The jets do this every season. .500 football early in the season making stupid mistakes. They cone on later in the year and sneak into the playoffs with good momentum. This season will be no different

  19. jetfan28 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:00 AM

Rex leads the team to the championship game two years in a row with a rookie qb and start the next year 2-2 and this buffoon acts like they are the run like the Bengals. Yet, when they start winning again he’ll be tripping over himself to get his face on Hardknocks to gush over them. He is pathetic.

  20. primetime6 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:03 AM

Although he has become a bit of a buffoon… you can’t deny that he is pretty much on target with everything he says.

  21. djteknision1200 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:07 AM

Everyone wants to knock the old man when he has critical statements on his former team, but I bet if he was passing high praises for the Jets, the fans would say Joe is the greatest QB ever. No one ever like to hear negative statements but Joe is speaking the truth and the truth hurts.

  22. jetfan28 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:08 AM

“the draft has been mediocre at best”. Hmm. This is the same gm that drafted Revis, Harris, Mangold, Ferguson, Sanchez, Keller and got Holmes for a 5th rounder. So because they have two bad picks (gholston and ducasse), Tannaenbaum is a bad GM.
You also include McKnight as a “bad” pick. Last year he had a 100 yard rushing game. This year he block a punt, forced a fumble and ran a kick out for a td. This from a 4th rounder. How is that a bad pick.
I suppose the Pats drafts has been much better. Their bust list is much longer.

  23. steviethewiz says: Oct 4, 2011 8:08 AM

Ha Ha ampats waiting for his Super Bowl this Sunday what a joke that guy is. Like the 4th game of the season makes up for the one and done playoff loss by the cheaters last year. I bet his Mom makes him a special PB & J for the game and makes sure his Pats feety pajammies are nice and clean too……..

  24. zoxitic says: Oct 4, 2011 8:10 AM

Jason Hill and Joe Namath are both right.

  25. prior0knowledge says: Oct 4, 2011 8:10 AM

Joe is 100% right and MDS is wrong to criticize one of the most loyal and fearless QB I have ever seen. Joe was an awesome QB. Late in his career, the Jets had no running game and no offensive line. Joe was gimpy from all the punishment. He had to pass every down. But he stood in the pocket and made those passes and it was brutal. I am not a Jets fan, but I remember those games. He was awesome to watch.

  26. indywilson40 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:12 AM

    @ steviethewiz

Hahahahahaha your probably right. Ampats dont be so confident because your d is going to be christmas for the jets after what they got last week. This is going to be a close game and the jets need it more and need to make a statement. As far as namath please shut the hell up. This guy is making me like him less and less by the week.

  30. ampats says: Oct 4, 2011 8:29 AM

    jetfan28,

revis, mangold, harris and ferguson were drafted during the Mangini regime. Tanny was the GM but Mangenous had alot of input into the draft, like when he drafted V Gholston. Lets not forget you traded up to get Sanchez over Freeman. How is that working out?

    steviethewiz,

Its week#5 but don’t let that affect your immature rant. I bet you have alot of experience with the last two lines of your post.

  31. MichaelEdits says: Oct 4, 2011 8:31 AM

Where is “we” coming from? I believe that Super Bowl III was roughly XLV Super Bowls ago.

  32. contract says: Oct 4, 2011 8:35 AM

Making Holmes a captain was a joke. He’s a guy who can’t take care of his own stuff and routinely plays at 1/2 speed. Definitely not leadership material.

  33. ny82jy says: Oct 4, 2011 8:36 AM

The jets have the second best ranked pass d in the league so far. 8th overall total d. Ill take that on the pass happy pats. The offense has been the real problem. But the 32nd yes 32nd ranked d in the league is the pats. This is what the jets need, mayo is down this is a great chance for their offense to get back on track. They moved the ball last year on them and if they cant this year that will be real sorry.

  34. sasquash20 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:37 AM

The Jets don’t draft well at all. They moved up for Sanchez, and he looks as average as can be. They put there faith in a RB who just doesn’t get it done in Greene. There o-line isn’t as good without the center playing. This team has no shot at a super bowl the way there playing.

  35. richm2256 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:38 AM

Nobody would really care if the Yets slumped, except for their head coach’s constant yapping about “gonna win the Super Bowl” and “shoulda beat this team and then we woulda beat the other team”.

This team and its fans have brought this criticism on themselves for their big mouths.

  36. j0esixpack says: Oct 4, 2011 8:48 AM

When Joe guarantees a Super Bowl the Jets win a Super Bowl

When Rex guarantees a Super Bowl… well, Jets fans pretty much know how the last two seasons have turned out

  37. semperfi24 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:52 AM

But all of the Jets fans have been telling us that Wilson was a better pick than McCourty…and Ducasse is a beast…and Wilkerson is the future of D lineman…blah blah blah. Every team finds gems in the late rounds of the draft, and every team steps on their d_ck in the early rounds, it happens.

I just get tired of hearing fans that dont know what the f_ck they are talking about compare draft picks of their team to draft picks of other teams. You have no idea why a team made the choice they made. You have no idea what the team wants its players to do, with schemes and things like that. None of us really know. That is why you have guys like Welker, arguably the best receiver in football, couldnt find the field in San Diego, or Miami, and all of a sudden he is all world in New England. It comes down to schemes, and play calling, etc. He obviously didnt fit the scheme of his first 2 teams. That isnt a knock on those teams, San Diego has had a pretty potent offense over the last 6 years (with big, tall receivers, Welker isnt that).

Look at Aaron Maybin, bust in Buffalo, he wasnt all pro the other night, but he looked like a pretty good player in Rex’s defense. As the season goes on, he should get better. So none of us really knows regardless of how much we pretend to know.

  39. starderup says: Oct 4, 2011 9:01 AM

That ‘average’ QB was the first one I ever saw leading a team that scored three times in under two minutes to come from behind and win a game.
For us ‘fossils’ that are old enough to remember seeing him play, he was amazing. If they had knee reconstruction back in those days like in the modern world, he might have won several rings, like prioroknowledge says.
The old school NFL was pretty exciting once this guy came onto the scene.

  40. Patskrieg dot com says: Oct 4, 2011 9:01 AM

Some claims Joe Namath has made here:

Tennenbaum is a crappy G.M. – well, yeah.
Santonio Holmes is a crappy leader – just ask the Steelers
The Jets did a crappy job building offensive line depth – well that’s pretty obvious
Sanchez is a 2nd tier QB who hasn’t developed despite being coddled for 2 years and letting his defense win games for him – Didn’t say it yet, but that’s what everyone is thinking.

  41. ytsejamer1 says: Oct 4, 2011 9:03 AM

Umm…it sounds spot on to me. If those statements came from anyone else’s mouth, we’d say that’s pretty accurate football analysis on the Jets team at this time.

I don’t think he’s saying anything out of line. Just because the guy isn’t an NBC or ESPN analyst, doesn’t make him wrong or sound like an old, crotchety player.

Get off your high horse PFT.

  42. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Oct 4, 2011 9:07 AM

I mean the man has a point, yea Rex has done a great job leading the jets. Fact is they arnt looking great right now. Also they need to move on from the shonne green experiment. He’s entirely too slow to be a rb in the nfl, they need an all around runner that can do it all and run hard between the tackles.

  44. jcjets says: Oct 4, 2011 9:08 AM

Namath makes some good points. You can tell he is still watching everything, and even reading post game comments!

But tell me which teams doesn’t have bad draft picks? Gholston was a colossal mistake. Ducasse, their 2nd round pick from last year looks to be a big one, as well.

But at this point in the season, I have confidence the Jets are still going to the playoffs. And I think they get the win up in Foxburo this week!

  45. jcjets says: Oct 4, 2011 9:11 AM

@gregeer if you’re point is that Sanchez should be carrying the jets on his back, then you’re right he can’t do that. But there are probably only 3-4 QBs in the league that can.

Joe Flacco didn’t exactly look too great on sunday night either..

If the media asks Namath a question he is going to answer it. That’s the way he is

Nice attempt to deflect some negativity towards a team not mentioned in the article at all.

Anyway, perhaps Pats have more busts but they seem to have several more picks every year than the average team. Considering the overall team success over the last decade, you can point all you like to the “long list” of NE bust picks if that gets you puffed up, but they are still more successful and have the hardware to prove it.

PS – this not coming from a Pats fan.

What are you talking about dude? Wish some people on here looked at stats before posting.

In 2009 they only made the playoffs because the Colts and Cinci both laid down for the them and didn’t even play there starters the last 2 games…..that’s momentum??

Last year they went 2-3 their last 5 games before limping into the playoffs.

The Jets need to start strong to even have a chance to play in the playoffs. There offense looks like it couldn’t even score if the opposing defense forgot to take the field….

Namath was absolutely right this week. Rex needs to stop the dog and pony show of telling them and anyone else that will listen how good they are and just go out on the field and get it done.

Unless they are counting on a couple of teams laying down for them again at the end of the year.

  57. slowclyde86 says: Oct 4, 2011 9:46 AM

I think the important part of Joe’s criticism in this case is not just that some of their picks have been terrible (and at this point, an argument can be made inclusive of Sanchez), but that the Jets stick with the draft misses too long (e.g. Gholston)—perhaps ironically given the alternative approach of their upcoming opponent.

    • 173 TDs and 220 INTs
    • 65.5 career QB rating
    • in his 13 year career, 11 years had more INTs than TDs
    • 50.1% career completion percent
    • In his “prediction” SB game the only TD the Jets scored was a run (plus 3 FGs) and Namath didn’t even throw a pass in the entire 4th quarter. The Jets D won the game and Namath got all the credit. Sound familiar?

overrated, I guess you haven’t seen Joe throw a football, remember when he played the game, you could grab a receiver all over the field, the offense linemen couldn’t use their hands to pass block. If Joe got to play in today pass happy rules and you couldn’t hit the qb like in today’s rules the guy would throw for 5,000 yards, also the AFL wanted a more wide open game to compete with the NFL at the time. Say what you want about the guy, but nobody threw the ball as good as Joe did. He’s in the hall of fame for reason.

Former ‘Bama players (I almost said alumni, but I think you have to graduate to be called that.) meddle with their former team and now they are doing it at the pro level.

Maybe today Joe would be another Tomy Romo?

Ha Ha ampats waiting for his Super Bowl this Sunday what a joke that guy is. Like the 4th game of the season makes up for the one and done playoff loss by the cheaters last year. I bet his Mom makes him a special PB & J for the game and makes sure his Pats feety pajammies are nice and clean too……..

    —————————————————–

Think your almighty Jetz are going to make the playoffs? They’ll be 2-3 after this Sunday, and the good ship Jetz ain’t gonna be righted any time soon. All you Jetz blowhards will really be crying then, especially Rexy Baby!

Ha – nice reading comprehension there gaypatsfan – try to follow along Nancy – ampats has been posting for weeks how she “CANT WAIT” for this weeks game so I rightly point out how sad she any other pat fans are if a week 5 game bring you comfort from the one and done playoff loss last year. No where did I say anything about the Jets chances this year but you’d have to have a 8th grade education to understand that – now go ask your Mom if you can have a play date over at ampats house Sunday and the two of you can use her easy bake oven while watching YOUR SUPERBOWL……..Ha Ha Ha what a tool you two ladies are.

    —————————————————-

Yeah, you’re a real wiz all right. You obviously don’t have a clue about the history of the Jetz vs the Pats. Every game is a Super Bowl between these two teams. Tell you what, numbnutz, go back to school and learn about the history of this rivalry. Enjoy it now too, pal, since your almighty Jetz are GOING DOWN!

  77. gregeer says: Oct 4, 2011 11:47 AM

    @jcjets

My point is Sanchez has been immune to widespread concern about the fact that he sucks because his team has been successful despite him. Now that said success is harder to come by for the Jets he’s being exposed as the fraud he is.

  78. jetfan28 says: Oct 4, 2011 11:50 AM

My problem is not with his criticism, but more with his incredible need for attention. When the Jets are winning, he creates a twitter account and has the pons pons on about they are Super Bowl bound. Now they are 2-2 and he’s leading the charge about how they stink. How about a little levity?
P.S. I hated when he had the pom pome too. He cares more about being relevant than anything else including the Jets.

  79. jetfan28 says: Oct 4, 2011 12:12 PM

AM pats. What exactly has Freeman done to make us Jet fans regret the Sanchez pick? Where is his big wins? Sanchez has four road playoffs wins in two years. The most in NFL history. You may remember one of them from last year when they smoked the Pats. Btw, Sanchez faced the Pats 5 times and decidedly outplayed Brady in three of those games.

  80. ravensfan4life52 says: Oct 4, 2011 12:27 PM

    @mumakata

Look at his stats, and then look at Trent Dilfer’s stats. the only difference is that Dilfer didn’t proclaim he was gonna win the Super Bowl before the game.

  81. ampats says: Oct 4, 2011 12:58 PM

    steviethewiz,

Never said that this game was our SuperBowl UNLIKE your NY/NJ newspapers that proclaimed the 28-21 divsional playoff win by the jets as the “greatest voctory in the history of the franchise”

Unlike jets fans, we understand what it means to be in the SB as Patriots fans have enjoyed the experience 4 times this decade. jets fans like jetfan28 above will continually refer to games which at the end of the day mean nothing since the jets enjoyed the SB in the same place as the other 30 teams,Its about the Lombardis

unfortunately jets fans have not known that feeling since it has been 42 years since they had a wiff and based on what we have seen so far this season, will soon be 43 years.

This board has been very quiet this week by jets fans since next Monday they will be 2-3.

  82. jetters149 says: Oct 4, 2011 1:14 PM

Am pats you really have to get your head out of your moms vagina. The jets will own your patsies this week. What happend last year when you had some players healthy Ohhh yeah you lost I do remember people saying that they are unstoppable last year right. The same ol patsies can’t win the big game and when was the last time you did win a playoff game?????? Just wondering hahhahahahaha. Championships are not handed out in October just remember that. Big deal hat we are 2-2 we will be 3-2 by Monday mark my words

  83. jetters149 says: Oct 4, 2011 1:22 PM

Ohh yeah what has the pats won since they got busted cheating ?????
They can’t even win a home playoff game for goodness sake. So don’t come in here saying won all the superbowls cause there is an asterisks beside those wins

  84. j0esixpack says: Oct 4, 2011 2:14 PM

@ jcjets says: But tell me which teams doesn’t have bad draft picks? Gholston was a colossal mistake. Ducasse, their 2nd round pick from last year looks to be a big one, as well.

Agreed – the draft is a crap shoot for the best of GMs. Every team is going to have busts – some years more than others.

@ jetters149 says: Ohh yeah what has the pats won since they got busted cheating ?????

Aside from rattling off an NFL record perfect regular season and one of the best – if not THE best – W/L records in the NFL since Spygate?

Aside from that, nothing I guess.

Leave it to a Jets fan to assert that a 16-0 record is “proof” that the team can’t win without “cheating.”

  85. ampats says: Oct 4, 2011 2:14 PM

    jetters149,

Thank you for allowing me to answer one of the dumbest questions posters by haters like yourself.

    2007 AFC East
2007 AFC Championship (you know those games your team couldn’t win)
    2009 AFC East
    2010 AFC East

Now please share what the jets have won in the past 43 years???

    Answer : NOTHING

  86. habsman says: Oct 4, 2011 3:08 PM

    @jetters149 aka steviethewimp,

Relax, take a deep breath,……………..and exhale. There, feel better?

Now we all know its been 43 years since your team won anything and I’m pretty sure neither your mom the waitress or your dad the garbage collector had even met yet, but don’t be angry at Pat’s fans because our team is successful. I mean, can’t we get along? Such anger and name calling….tsk tsk.

    Now go do your homework.

  87. jetters149 says: Oct 4, 2011 3:32 PM

You know you habsfan the name says it all. The Habs hey hahaha. But anyways the 16-0 season how did that finish ohh yeah they lost to the giants. And for am pats the div titles and the one afc champ game equals what, it equals exactly what we have won, so don’t be throwing the div titles around like the are the superbowl. The pats have not being able to win anything with out cheating. Just saying it’s a long season don’t hav to worry about the jets or do you. Way off topic but THE HABS lol give me a break no wonder you are a pats fan, the HABS. Ohhh my lord you made my day you shouldn’t be able to speak sports at all. The HABS lol. Go wings

  88. habsman says: Oct 4, 2011 4:15 PM

    @jetters,

Not sure what you’re on about there, but its habsman, not habsfan.

Anyway, glad you got a laugh, at what I’m not quite sure. But I guess being a Jets fan requires a sense of humor. I would suggest you UP the riddelin dosage tho……time for a beer.

  89. Mr. Wright 212 says: Oct 4, 2011 4:56 PM

Joe has been sober for almost a decade. I love Jets fans in denial who try to drown out what he’s saying.

  90. jetsfan80 says: Oct 4, 2011 6:16 PM

He needs to keep his mouth shut around the media and the bar… I’ve been a Jets fan my whole life, and the facts are the facts. He’s 1 of the most over hyped players of all time. He had a great arm and was in the right spot at the right time when his AFL Jets beat the NFL Colts. The guy was a Super Bowl MVP and didn’t throw a touchdown. Matt Snell got snubbed because of a out of his ass prediction that too many players make.

  91. lance19 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:17 PM

Jets fans should be scared that this old timer,
over 4 decades past his prime, seems to see
the team more clearly than the guys that are
paid to run the team, and see it up close every day.

  92. nyjalleffingday says: Oct 4, 2011 10:11 PM

    @Mr. Wright

And I love Jets haters that flip flop their opinions to suit their anti-Jets agenda. Namath isn’t NYJ staff, he has just as much of a clue how Rex is running the ship as any of us do, which is around 0%

  93. Mr. Wright 212 says: Oct 4, 2011 10:50 PM

Dude I don’t hate the Jets, but what he’s saying is accurate.

  94. lance19 says: Oct 5, 2011 1:30 AM

    @nyjalleffingday

You’re right. Namath has no more “inside”
information than “any of us do” (who have
been welcomed to Jets camp in Cortland,
and hung out with the coaching staff).
