With the offensive line in shambles and the starting quarterback recently in a walking boot, the Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed a player who was a key figure in underachieving Steelers offensive lines of the recent past.

Max Starks, whom the team dumped in July, is now back on the team. The Steelers announced the move this morning.

Starks joined the Steelers as a third-round pick in the 2004 draft. He played right tackle when the Steelers beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL, and he played left tackle when the Steelers beat the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

After playing the 2008 season under the transition tender of $6.9 million, Starks signed a four-year, $26.9 million contract in 2009. After finishing 2010 on injured reserve, the Steelers decided to move on.

Last week, Starks worked out for the Vikings.

To create a roster spot for Starks, the Steelers cut offensive lineman Chris Scott, a fifth-round pick in 2010.
