Patriots get three key starters back to practice

A. Hernandez4 Getty Images

The Patriots returned to a padded practice Thursday, and they got three key starters back in the mix.

Tight end Aaron Hernandez, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, and defensive lineman Mike Wright all got back to work for New England.

Hernandez and Haynesworth have both missed two straight games. Wright, perhaps the team’s best pass rusher at this point, hasn’t played since a Week 1 concussion.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo, running back Danny Woodhead (ankle), receiver Julian Edelman (ankle), and tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back) were all still out of practice.

Though Florio and I both picked the Jets to win on Sunday, the nine-point spread seems a little crazy considering New England’s injuries and awful defense.  If you are into that sort of thing.

This is certainly good for their team, but as far as the offense goes…just stick 10 guys out there next to Brady and marvel at how he makes them all into household names.

Mangold’s return is huge for the Jets & Hernandez coming back is huge for the Pats–especially since the Jets D will try to shut down Welker with different looks.

Mike Wright has generally been pretty solid in the pass rush (of course, using this relative to the Pats “pass rush” and not compared with the rest of the NFL). His return might be bigger than Haynesworth, since we’re waiting for Albert to show us something/anything at this point.

Sanchez (like Roethlisberger) can’t win shootouts against good teams. He (they) can squeak out 13-10 wins but that’s about it.

Unless the Jets defense holds the Patriots to 10 points or gets some defensive scores the Patriots win easily.

Bet the farm on the Patriots.

    “Key starters”?

Let’s see, that would be the cameraman, the film editor, and who else?

My guess is the third guy is probably the PR man… you know, the one who writes all those lies Belicheat tells everyone after the Patsys get caught cheating again…

Starter CB Leigh Bodden and promising rookie CB Ras-I Dowling also returned yesterday. All 5 guys were listed as “limited” today, but if even three of them can play it would be great.

  14. homelanddefense says: Oct 6, 2011 4:29 PM

How can Wright be the best past rusher “at this point” He has played 1 game….he was their best pass rusher last YEAR until he missed the last half of the season.

Pats are going to score at least 30. Can the Sanchize get that many. Didn’t think so. Hernandez is back and Welker is putting up sick numbers and the Gronk is unstoppable in the RZ. You can’t cover them all Revis.

  18. nysaysbringit says: Oct 6, 2011 4:33 PM

    ROOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL Another one guys

  19. ampats says: Oct 6, 2011 4:37 PM

Having Hernandez backs creates bigger mismatches for the jets. If Haynesworth can play, maybe we can rotate Big Vince to safety since he has become an interception machine.

Stick Big Al next to Vince and we will have a front seat to see the jets Ground N Fall Down running attack.

  20. tombradyallday says: Oct 6, 2011 4:43 PM

honestly dont give 2 f?cks bout the jets. they think they da s?it cause they made two afc champ appearances. patriots go to champ games and winn them. PATS ALL DAY

  21. gregggrammarrosenthal says: Oct 6, 2011 4:44 PM

I don’t know how any Jets’ fan got through this week after what happened on Sunday night…

That’s the type of loss that kills a team for a year, analagous to the type of win that can get a team through a year. (See Falcons’ first game after Katrina.)

  22. rexismybff says: Oct 6, 2011 4:48 PM

Haynesworth was a key missing starter. They sorely missed his 0.67 tackles and 0 sacks per game.

    SIX SB titles to THREE*.

    SCOREBOARD, rc33 the moron.

I don’t particularly like the Steelers but as long as they have double the total of the Pats (two of which are much more recent), Pats fans have NOTHING.

  26. dlk47823 says: Oct 6, 2011 5:09 PM

Tombradyallday- i think you gat an f- minus in spelling…same grade for the Pats in the Playoffs last 3 years. Do you even watch football?
    2009- Pats not in playoffs
2010- Ravens blowout Pats in Foxboro
2011-Jets dominate Pats in playoffs at Foxboro as Brady suffers worst game as a pro.

    Since Rex, Sanchez:
Jets 4 road playoff wins, 2 champoionship appearances
Pats, 1 playoff win at home, no championship appearances.
That Last Super Bowl win was 7 seasons ago.
Not alot to brag about since the almost undefeated season,,,oh yeah they lost to a NY team in that one too.

    @rexismybff,

If I were a Jets fan, I wouldn’t attack the Pats for going 7 years without winning a SB. The Jets haven’t won a SB in over 40 years. I think my mom was in 4th grade.

    @tombradyallday

Yeah right, unless you took mind-altering drugs last January methinks that you have thought about nothing else BUT the Jets for past 9 months…

It should be a competitive game if the Jets can get back into an offensive game flow. If Jets give Pats too many offensive opportunities this will be a one-sided game.

Last I checked the Jets were the team that the coaching staff got nailed for kneeing and tripping up a player while he ran by on the side lines.

The last 2 years the jets have gotten in the playoffs on tie-breakers. This year’s schedule is tougher. Last season they beat only two teams that ended up with a winning record in 16 games .

They will struggle to exceed .500 and miss the playoffs this time. They will lose at Foxboro and have only a 50/50 shot at winning in NJ.
