Rex Ryan says the Jets had their best practice of the year

AP

Three days before a big AFC East showdown with the Patriots, Jets coach Rex Ryan said his team had its best practice of the year today. That’s not necessarily a good sign, considering how the Jets did last season when they had their best practice of the year three days before playing the Patriots.

On December 3, 2010, the Jets were preparing to play the Patriots, and Ryan declared that day’s work to be the team’s best practice of the year. Three days later, the Jets lost to the Patriots, 45-3.

Last year’s great practice was marred by safety Jim Leonhard suffering a severe injury. This year’s great practice was, fortunately, injury-free.

We had a great practice today,” Ryan said today. “Very, very few mental mistakes. Guys were bouncing around. We just looked crisp, we looked sharp out there. Great communication. You can tell by the way we hit the practice field today that we’re ready to play.”

Then again, Ryan thought the Jets were ready to play in last December’s loss to the Patriots, too.

  1. I’m sure they had a great practice last week, and the week before that too. Ask Rex, he will tell you.

  2. that should make them feel a lot better when they lose on Sunday.

Not sure they can count on being the team that falls upward again (like they have the past two years).

  3. i’ll give the Pats credit,,,they are great in Sept and October. You may win again this week, but that D will be home in bed come January.

  4. What do you expect him to say?

“Nah, we’re terrible. We’ll play the Pats because we have to, but don’t expect much.”

Some of you are so hypocritical, it’s funny. Dude boasts about his team, you rag on him. Dude criticizes his team, you rag on him. (BTW, I’m not a Jets fan.)

  5. This makes me laugh. A reporter asked ryan today how practice went. He replied by saying it was one of their best of the year. Now that comment gets put on here and everyone will talk crap and say ryan is running his mouth and needs to shut up plus a million other stupid negative comments. Hes always portrayed as the bad guy on here. One thing though if you watch his interviews and especially the players interviews this week its clear they are coming to play. They know whats at stake and anyone who thinks this game is going to be a blowout i just dont see it.

  6. Rex’s team is looking forward to playing the Jets in a game that counts, after that practice.

  7. They had their best practice? So that means they’re super bowl champs right? I mean where are they getting their rings made?

You no expectations hit the wall when at the beginning of the season you are guarranteeing a superbowl and now you arebragging about having your best practice

  9. Based on the “Rex Ryan says” track record this means they’ve had the worst practice of the year

  10. How was the Packers’ practice? Maybe we could start getting daily updates on the quality of practices around the league. You could do them right after the daily Tebow update.

  11. Rex also told everybody they were going to win the Super Bowl the past three years. The guy is a moron.

  12. In the now infamous words of Allan Iverson “Practice, man. It’s practice. It’s not a game. It’s practice!”

  13. I can see why Rex has so much confidence in his team. They really do look good—on paper—and I’m sure he keeps staring at the paper with those dazed clueless eyes.

  14. Even the almighty Belichick says “The war is one before it starts. Its in the preparation. ”
Bottom line: Bill is 2-3 against Rex and 0-1 in the playoffs. Pats may win this week, but they’
ll lose in Ny and lose in the playoffs. Same as last year.

And the Patriots aren’t coming to play???

  16. Rooney- What will you say when Tenn comes and blows out the pitiful Steelers? You’ll wish you had a good week of practice.

  17. @marcuswelby70

I didnt say anything about the pats and i really could give a crap if they come to play or not. Im worried about my own team and how we execute.

  18. @ achap39

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Rex criticize his team. He’s too busy telling everyone that they’re going to win the Super Bowl every year for him to criticize anyone. He’d be predicting a Super Bowl victory this year even if he were coaching the Vikings.

    @ ny82jy

Are you kidding me? I’m not even a Patriots fan but it’s obvious Brady is going to go nuts on the Jets defense all day long! Welker will have another huge game, and Aaron Hernandez might be back to give them even more offensive power. Only weakness the Pats have is their defense but that’s against teams with decent offense which the Jets DO NOT have. Sanchez needs to hang it up and start his modeling career he obviously wants. Maybe Sanchez and Rex can do a spread for GQ where Rex sucks on Sanchez’s toes I think that would fulfill both of their dreams.

  19. Rexys act is getting old…he doesn’t win…an d the fickle jet fans will turn fast on him…faster than he dives for his wifes toes after a long day in pumps.

Everyday…something done to attract attention to themselves.

Enjoy your 43rd anniversary jets & jet fans…futile.

  20. @twesty85

You do know the jets have the 2nd ranked pass d in the league right? Brady is gonna go nuts on the jets d right? Just like he did last time they played right? Lets see how welker does if they put revis on him and for you to say the jets offense isnt good you simply dont know what your talking about. Yes they had a dreadful game last week but the week before they put up 460yds on oakland and they have played the last two weeks without mangold, this week they will have him which will be huge. They have weapons did you not watch the playoff game last year at all? Wait till Plax or Holmes burns their 32nd ranked d again.

  21. Meh. Don’t really see how this and not the fact that Rex proclaimed himself a Hall-of-Famer today with that ridiculous jacket made PFT. And of course the Patriot fanboys eat it up.

Both teams will be prepared. I’d say Brady is invincible in Gillette but didn’t these two teams play each other last January? How’d that turn out?

  22. Good for you Rex…good for you. Too bad your incredible practices don’t count in the standings. You and your boys need to get it done on the field and you need a muzzle. I don’t think either is going to happen (but you sure TALK a good game).

Who cares. JETS stomped their heads in during the playoffs. That’s all that matters.
    ******************

Agreed. That was the jets Super Bowl.

  24. @ ny82jy

your mom could put 460 yards up on oakland. the jets have the 2nd best pass defense because they’ve only played one team with a winning % over .500. having the second best pass defense after playing the jaguars(1-3), cowboys(2-2), raiders(2-2) and the ravens(3-1) means nothing. just look at who they’ve played and it explains why their pass defense is ranked 2nd in the league. you bring up the playoff game last year why? are we still playing the same season? i thought that season was over and the packers won the super bowl. you allowed tony romo to put 342 yards up on your “pass defense” in week one. WEAK. jets are going nowhere just like every other year.

  25. the pats are going to have their best practice of the year beginning this Sunday at 4:15pm

Hope the pats had time to brush up on their fake punts!!!

  26. Hey Rex,

I borrowed a friend’s TV today and hooked it up in my basement and watched NFL rewind game of the Jets vs. Ravens….Jets never looked better. Sadly, that did not count and I returned the TV today. I wonder what MY TV will look like when you play the Patriots this Sunday………….

  27. The Jets played one decent game out of four and it was against a bad team. If you go by what they’ve shown on the field this year they aren’t very good.

  28. And……..

He likes feet, his team is going to win the super bowl, his team is the geatest ever, blah blah blah

All he does is talk, not to mention he backs off half his comments after they blow up in his face.

His team will not win with his superficial attitude, his awful offensive coordinator and his pretty boy QB that couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if it were open!!

They will be bounced in the first week of the playoffs if they even get there.

  29. achap39 says:
What do you expect him to say?
    —————————————————————-
How about he just says nothing and does his talking on the field Sunday?

  30. In a related story, Joe Namath slept until 4PM again today…

and STILL evaluated the Jets more accurately
    than Rex Ryan did….

  31. .

    @nyj82jy

Did you ever hear the saying “money talks and BS walks “?

Why not head to your bookie and cowboy up? Oh, the middle school dance isn’t over yet. Say hello to Lady Gaga ….I’m sure she has something more lucid and cogent regarding Sunday’s game

Google the words, “lucid” and “cogent” for definition. Maybe they’ll be on your next language arts test. And while you’re at it google “tool “. Your photo may pop.

    .

  32. @6ball
What the hell are you talking about? Really! Your gonna call me out for what again? Your calling me a tool lol? Ok bro if that makes your dumbass feel better. Why dont you try commenting on the article and if your gonna try to blast me at least make sense doing it.

  33. @twesty85

Yea the jets havent went against a great pass team but for you to say that they arent a good pass d team is untrue. Like em or hate em dallas can throw the ball and they have a real good offense. Baltimore has alot of weapons to in case u havent noticed and the jets arent the first team they whipped this yr either. This is almost the same d as last year and its proven they are a good d thats why i bring up the playoff game last year you moron. If you dont think they can come up with another good gameplan and stop them AGAIN then i dont know what to tell you.

  34. When you can’t brag about winning games, you can brag about great practices. “We’re number one baby! Best in the league baby! Let’s get a [beep] snack!”

  35. This is not relevant.
I’m just glad he didn’t predict they’d come in last this year…That would’ve scared me.
Bottom line, good game coming Sunday, if Pats are careful with the ball and make the Jets hurry to score, they should have it.
If NE gets showy, they won’t win. Need is good patient playcalling and coaching at the half. Run the damned game, like ya used ta do.

  36. ny82jy says:Oct 6, 2011 6:24 PM

    i just dont see it.

    —————————

Did you see them lose to the Raiders and the Ravens? I did and both were beautiful!

Did you see that idiot Romo gift them the opening? By all rights the YETS should be 1 – 3 and you know it…

Blowout – no but you are sweating the loss…
