Frank Gore: 49ers kept pounding, Eagles quit

Frank Gore AP

San Francisco running back Frank Gore has a simple explanation for how the 49ers turned a 23-3 deficit into a 24-23 victory on Sunday in Philadelphia: The 49ers kept fighting, and the Eagles quit.

“I think playing that second half and the way we came out, the Eagles didn’t want to play no more,” Gore said on ESPN First Take.

Gore scored the game-winning touchdown with three minutes left, and he says he sensed that the Eagles just weren’t interested in playing 60 minutes of intense, physical football.

“We just kept pounding and kept pounding and making plays and we kind of knocked the fight out of them,” Gore said.

Gore is the latest to articulate what everyone in the NFL seems to be thinking: All that big-name talent in Philadelphia isn’t playing very hard right now.

It’s true. I’m not even trying to hate but that Eagles team is SOFT. Softer than a baby’s behind.

  2. kingjoe1 says: Oct 7, 2011 2:17 PM

The Eagles quit because they are lazy, soft and think everyone else is going to pick them up. Hmmm, this kind of sounds like all those Occupy Wallstree DB’s.

Sigh….i say fire andy reid or juan castillo(or both) because its becoming clearer everyday that this is a coaching problem. If we don’t beat the bills, then we’re done.

Oh my…now players are gonna chime in…

    Pile on the Iggles!

I can’t help but hope that Gore and his 49’ers make the play-offs now…though it’s unlikely Gore will still be healthy if they do.

Sure, they won the game, but seriously…is that much of an accomplishment at this point? My Iggles are giving these games away…gift-wrapped even!

Congratz Frank…and the Niners and all their fans…I am glad you feel good about yourself in week 4.

Hope to see you down the road…my Iggles have dug themselves a hole…you are standing on the mole-hill.

    Watch your step.

    Go Eagles.

You shouldn’t gloat when you win.

Gore has an under .500 lifetime pro record so in the vast majority of the games he’s played HE was the one who quit and not the big tough guy that makes the other team quit. Right?

  26. justbust says: Oct 7, 2011 2:47 PM

the d-line is producing with sacks, but wide nine is supposed to filter everything inside. you need like 2 decent linebackers to play this defense a weak side lb to run stop and strong side lb to cover a tight end. We have 1 or none decent linebackers, so till the mlb can get off blacks and make some plays the sack total means nothing. Babin has 7 meaningless sacks and jenkins has 4, the each might as well have none.

wait wait,, is there really a pac man jones fan trying to rip on someone for morality??

& yes everyone including Gore is right,, this team has no heart.. they released all the leaders in each of the past 3 years.. what do they expect.

now the team has taken on the identity of its doughy coach.. S O F T

yeah they spent a $hit ton of money in the offseason,, but it was only to address positions important to Andy Reid and his philosophies,, not to positions that make a solid defensive team..

They are stacked @ CB and DE.. they even went and got a presence at DT,, but then with genius thinking they moved that beast DT into a 5 technique & didnt spend a single penny on LBs..

one day Reid will wake up and realize he needs LBs to have a championship quality defense..

hopefully its on a sunday next year,, in the preseason,, and he turns the TV to channel the eagles are on

Not having Quentin Mikell is really hurting them. They really underestimated him.

The longest tenured Eagle defender is Patterson and I’ve never heard him speak (except for after the seizure).

A lot of this is on Howie to me. It’s easy to sign players, but it’s hard to field a team.

As a Niner fan…not feeling good. The Niners stink. BUT they still beat your Eagles.

  50. norcaleagles says: Oct 7, 2011 4:17 PM

Yea I agree that the Eagles are underperforming, but they’re not soft. They play hard as hell for 3 quarters and then get too comfortable and think that the other team cant come back on them. If they were soft, then they’d be getting pounded for 4 quarters. And thats a fact. They just need to get passed the mindset that they’re unbeatable. I think 3 straight losses has humbled them. We’ll see on sunday. How many years have Andy Reids’ teams started out slow. 0-2, 2-3, 5-5-1. All playoff years. I honestly have no doubt that the Eagles will still make the playoffs. We’ll see who’s in the playoff chase in Nov. and Dec. Frank Gore can enjoy his 1 good game he’s had this season. I wonder if Gore believes that the 49er defense gave up and didnt want anymore of the cowboys when the cowboys rallied back and beat the 49ers??

When a losing franchise like the 49ers start off so well, you’re going to hear stupid comments like Gore made. Problem is, they don’t look down the road and consider that when the close the season at 6-10 or 7-9 and the Eagles have surged to at least compete for a playoff spot, nobody is going to remember the one comeback you put together. Nevermind that you beat the Seahawks and the Bengals, barely, in your other two wins.

Good news for SF is that 6-10 or 7-9 might win that division.

    But keep it ‘Niner, Frank.

  56. goldrush36 says: Oct 7, 2011 4:41 PM

  62. prior0knowledge says: Oct 7, 2011 6:15 PM

How can this be true? I am a Redskins fan and I always thought that the one sure thing in football is that a game with Philly is always a knock-down, drag-out, punch-em-in-the-mouth, hard violent fist fight.

Ever since the infamous “body bag” game, it has been like that. And now I read that Philly quit? Someone on this message board went so far as to call the Eagles “Soft?” What the heck is going on?

I think I just saw a pig fly by my window and a New York Times editorial praising the Tea Party.

Did Philadelphia win? I must’ve missed that part… and that kind of yardage is hardly an accomplishment against the secondaries we’ve had over the past 10 years. How many yards did McCoy have by the way? It was a one dimensional game period. Oh and how exactly does that constitute as a fair weather fan anyway? Please ask Mr Santa Clause for a dictionary pinhead. Lazy was his approach to the 2nd half, the press conference, everything that has happened since. Jay Cutler puts up some monster games occasionally. His heart and passion for the game are still questioned DAILY! Romo, same difference…. Oh and quit polluting this state with your stupidity. Not a big fan of Vick…personal life aside…his game, while at times amazing, doesn’t look to be consistant enough to beat good teams…in the play-offs. Where I still see my Iggles being.

That being said…can’t blame him for any of the 3 losses…ball security has been the only thing holding the Eagles back.

    “losing franchise like the Niners”?

Football didn’t start 9 years ago. I believe my team has 5, and your team has 0. I believe the Eagles run the west coast offense? I believe the Niners were pioneers in perfecting that 30 years ago. I believe Andy Reid and Marty Morningweg has coaching tree ties to the Niners.

Sad thing is these are not beliefs, but facts.
