Rex Ryan on Bill Belichick: He’s the champ, I’ll take a swing at him

AP

When Rex Ryan coaches the Jets against Bill Belichick’s Patriots, he looks at it like a title fight in which Belichick is the defending champion.

That’s the analogy Ryan used today in discussing coaching against Belichick on Sunday.

“From a competitive standpoint, that’s like facing the world champ,” Ryan said today, in comments distributed by the Jets’ PR department. “You know the only way to beat him is you’ve got to be at your very best, then we’ll see. You want to compete against the very best. Certainly, with him, he is the best coach out there, may go down as the best coach in the history of the game, but I’m going to take my swing at him.”

If Belichick is the best coach in the history of the game, Ryan must be pretty good, too: In five meetings since Ryan became the Jets’ head coach, Ryan is 3-2 against Belichick.

  1. Belichick is an excellent coach, but he’s not the best in the history of the game, although he’s on my top 10.

Rex needs to stop buttering him up before every Jets-Pats game, it’s tired now. Did he get a sneak peak at Bill’s feet or something?

  2. Belichick…a genius? Sure look at the defense he put together…hot garbage! I predict he will be coaching Boston Lastin High Flag Football in a couple of years…suckas

  3. Ryan and his jets skeeted by so many games last year it made me sick….they and Ryan arent that good. its more like luck on most of their w’s. case in point this year…. thanks romo.

  4. I’ll be so glad when this game is over……too much talk. Besides, the games between these two aren’t even that good.

  5. Ryan says this in every Pats/jets meeting. He really thinks he’s better than Belichick. Colorful coaches that talk bluster usually get tuned out pretty quickly by the players. Especially when they try to make themselves the show. It’s Jerry Glanville redux

  6. Well we will be tied at 3-3 after Sunday
The last time the Jets won anything relevant was before we landed on the MOON!!

  7. .

Two talented, well coached division rivals who don’t particularly like each other ……isn’t that why we watch?

    .

  8. “If Belichick is the best coach in the history of the game, Ryan must be pretty good, too: In five meetings since Ryan became the Jets’ head coach, Ryan is 3-2 against Belichick.”

I don’t like these head-to-head comparisons. In the 1992, 1993, and 1995 Dallas Cowboy championship seasons, they were 2-4 against the Washington Redskins. That head-to-head record doesn’t mean the Redskins were better than the Cowboys.

  9. The swing that Rex takes would be way more dangerous if his arms could get past his belly.
It’s why he loves everyone else’s feet…he hasn’t seen his own since ’65.

  10. “From a competitive standpoint, that’s like facing the world champ,” – Rex is getting the Patriots and the Packers confused.

  11. World champ of what….the AFC East?
Belichik hasnt won a title in 7 years now.

Then again, I guess that does look pretty good to someone who’s never won anything like Ryan.

  12. yeah but what about joe namath? huh? how does he feel about the jets this hour? huh? how’s vick’s hand? how much do people like or love romo? huh? these are the important things!

  13. rex is a darn good coach but this Belicheck is god stuff is getting old. Cant he just can his shtick and coach? Apparently not.

Anyway I bet its a good game Sunday, much better than the oddsmakers seem to think. Whaterver else you say about Rex he sure is a good motivator also.

  14. Yawn…ho-hum….boring.

This act is getting real old now

C’mon Rex, think of something…anything new!

  15. The whole Ryan clan is overrated. Buddy was so full of crap he needed his own septic tank. Named one of his horses “fired for winning” and always claimed that he did “nothing but win” in Philadelphia. Buddy, if I recall right, was in philly for 5 years and never won a playoff game. Career head coaching record is a mediocre 55-55-1.

Rex at least has won a few playoff games, but he’ll wear out his welcome soon enough.

  16. Belichick is the best coach today and probably the best ever…Can’t stand him or the Pats but they may have the best coach and best quarterback to ever play/coach in the NFL

  17. “Ryan must be pretty good, too”…really? I remember the Jests scrambling for their lives coming back against sh*t teams last year out of the conference. Jets have just seen the Pats too many times and have gotten lucky against them. Won’t do em any good this
week, though…Good luck covering Gronk and Hernandez. All of Cro’s kids, cover your eyes, this isn’t going to be pretty.

  18. Everyone in New England just shut up, turn your back and walk away….

Nothing to see here…let the Jets just keep talking…

On the NFL Films A Football Life with Belichick, Bill was on his boat, leaned back, feet up, no shoes on, Rex probably busted in his drawers…

  20. Every yr teams target their offseason towards one game. Balti wasn’t gonna let Pitts beat them again. Bills got tired of losing to the Pats. Houston couldn’t wait to beat Indy, although Manning injury made that irrelevant.

Losing to the jets @home in the playoffs was one of the worst losses in franchise history. They’re on a mission. jets are down right now . This could get ugly. I think even Ryan knows it.

  21. People need to realize that Wrecks is being PAID to bloviate excessively so the Jersey Green Beans will be noticed, written up, soundbyted, blogged, etc., etc. All is aimed toward creating the illusion of relevancy and selling PSLs.

  22. Rexy needs to stop obsessing over Bill Belichick. There isn’t another coach in the league who draws Rexy’s CONSTANT tongue bathing.
    Creeeeeeeeppppy.

  23. He talks like an overzealous little league coach. It’s so obvious this guy will never win a Super Bowl.

  24. In case you were wondering what a Dolphins fan thinks:

Belichick has my respect. Rex Ryan never will.

  25. Jeezzzz stop w Rex Ryan nonsense. This site is becoming bullish$&; . Noone cares what his fat mouth spits out every hour. Give it a rest . He s obnoxious , 9 time baby daddy who can’t name his kids is a joke, pft jus give it a rest.

  26. @tilllman40 is spot on enough already, didnt he say the EXACT same thing last year, and the year before etc. etc……

  27. Rex did play the champs last season. 9-0. In his own house. Too bad for him the game is played with players rather than his mouth.

  28. Nobody cares what Dolphins fans think.

  29. Should be the other way around in the words of smokey. “you got knocked the f out”. Of the playoffs last year

  30. Rex doesnt talk around things..he talks too much, but if his team backs it up….great.

If he doesnt everyone laughs….it beats “Mr. Mortician” on the other side….its always a classic match-up.

If Pats blow em out, get ready for long week, Jets fan.

Jets 21 Pats 3….print it suckas!

I have it in my Outlook calender as a 7:30 appointment.

    We’ll see….

  33. first the Yankees overpriced, purple-lipped, rapidly diminidhing skills “super-star”, A-Rod, K’s tice in his last 2 at-bats-ths latter K to end the playoffs and the dreams of the Highest priced team in baseball history; Can’t even get out of the first round!.

Then the perpetual Not-Yets get smoked in Foxboro.
NYJ D-Line? Meet Stevan Ridley, the guy you wished you had instead of Shonn Greene

    Print it Jack-Ass!

  34. this guy has some kind of SICK obsession with bill belichick, Over and over again bills the best bills the greatest, I’m starting to get creeped out by this fat foot fetish IDIOT ..

  35. Rex Ryan is a wannabe turd. His brother is for that matter too. All talk and no substance. Great coaches like Belichick don’t need his schtick. Legendary coaches like Lombardi or Halas would consider him a hack.

  36. the bills refused to double welker so as not to give up huge plays, lots of yards but not huge plays and prayed they could outscore the pats by the end . it worked. however i don`t think rex will be as patient and brady will hit his TE`S time after time. i see sanchez throwing at least two picks trying to play catch up. i hate both teams but i got a feeling the jets are in for a major league drubbing. pats 35-jets10.

  37. Page 1, Sentence 1 of Rex Ryan’s Coaching Football for Dummies: “Huff and puff, flex your biceps and stick out your gut in hopes that your fans and the NFL wont realize your team sucks ass.”

Good god Rex, shut your fat pie hole and try focusing on fixing those revolving doors you call an offensive line. The Jets will be lucky to keep the game within 3 TD’s.

  38. Jesus!!! Am i the only one who sees that Billicheat win 2 superbowls bc he was a good HC and had SUPERIOR and DEEPER talent on defenae! Now that his D is wack he doesnt win… Its not about the Xs and Os, its about the billy and the joes.

  39. Hey Rex here is a list of a few things you might want to take a swing at first before you climb Mount Belichick:

    1. Take a swing at getting a real QB, because the hispanic mechanic is not cutting it.

    2. Take a swing at your offensive line, because they are truly offensive. It is the reason you can not “ground and pound anymore.”

    3. Take a swing at removing your foot from your mouth, because if it is not your own foot your wife’s is likely in there.

    4. Take a swing at winning an AFC title game before you talk about a Super Bowl.

sorry but your statement loses all credibility when you say “its tired now” and a rex ryan foot joke.

    does this lard a$$ ever S T F U?

    ————————————————-

    do you?

  42. In order to stop the Patriots offense, you have to get pressure on Brady. Make him throw before he is ready. The Jets have done that in the past. The Patriots will score some points, the Jets offense will have to have their best game of the year. The Jets will need at least 30 points to win. If the defense scores, like Buffalo did, the Jets have a shot.

Will the Patriot’s fan please give some football analysis/insight instead of trying to make stupid jokes or hating on Rex.

  43. @3yrsnfl:

Thanks for the insight professor. You’re Ron Jaworski and John Gruden rolled into one. Who would have thought of those cogent points w/o you.

  44. If Ryan cant shut his trap but is honest in what he says, then by 7PM Sunday he will be repeating the famous Pedro Martinez quotation…..

I guess that Bill Belichek is my daddy……………..

    Pats 42
    Jets 10

  45. @ infectorman;

I cant “print” anything as far as the game in Foxboro is concerned. That remains to be seen….both teams have issues but are going to be focused … should be a good one!

LOL…As far as the Yankees go..are you kidding me???..Dont even go there ,when the Bosox sat at home and watched the game…as usual!
    Get a few more rings….”Jack-ass”

  46. So every coach has sessions with the media. Just because a blog site chooses not to “report” on your favorite teams coach you people complain that Rex never shuts up. You could: a. Go to your own team website and read about your irrelevant, boring coach or b. not read the article with Rex’s name in the headline.

And the foot jokes are about as childish as the 30 year old that lives in their parent’s basement waiting for mommy to bring down a poptart. Of course, they are probably one in the same.
