Bears’ plan for Calvin Johnson: “hit him”

Zackary Bowman, Calvin Johnson AP

The Bears’ defense is promising to get physical with Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson on Monday night.

Bears nickel back D.J. Moore told CSNChicago.com that the key to stopping Johnson is to attack him with a physical style of play.

Make sure you hit him,” Moore said. “Hit him.”

The 5-foot-9 Moore knows he’s not going to out-leap the 6-foot-5 Johnson, but that doesn’t mean he thinks Johnson can’t be covered.

“When you’re big and fast like that, you’re going to catch balls,” Moore said. “Jump balls, he’s probably going to win those. But timing routes, you can still break on the ball like you would any other ball.”

Moore says he doesn’t believe the hype that Megatron is some unstoppable force.

“I don’t think people should be thinking somebody is too good, have somebody come in and you give them too much credit, over-think about what you’re doing,” Moore said. “I think we’ll be fine.”

  3. esposito35 says: Oct 9, 2011 7:33 AM

You might want to try getting pressure on the QB like most teams do…….hitting a 6’5 250 lb WR with exceptional speed and savy lol

  4. thrstr says: Oct 9, 2011 7:36 AM

so now we can look for a few pass interfence calls to go with the 150 yds and 2 TDs? good job Dah Bears

He is a beast but there are always ways to take someone out of the game..they still have to make him work hard for everything nothing easy…and not just lay down

  8. gregeer says: Oct 9, 2011 7:58 AM

This guy thinks he’s going to be more physical than a guy who is 6’5″, 230 odd pounds? That ought to be fun to watch.

  9. egreen4590 says: Oct 9, 2011 8:03 AM

    According to a NICKEL back.
At 5’9″ he’ll need a step stool to stop CJ.
How bout some big names on the Bears D steppin up and sayin this?

Maybe after they heard Rob Ryan say that CJ would be the 3rd WR on the Cowboys…coaches and players are learning to keep their mouths shut.

As a Packers fan, I’d kind of like to see the Lions lose a few. But not this one. Oh no, not this one. I hope they embarrass Duh Bears to the tune of a 40-point beating.

LMAO. A 5’9″ corner and your strategy is “hit him”? Let me fill you in on a little physics……. Force = Mass * Acceleration. Sure, go ahead and “hit him” with all 180p lbs and watch from the ground as he catches the ball.

  20. NFLJunkie says: Oct 9, 2011 8:35 AM

What Moore says is true, or at least you hear it consistently from almost all defenses preparing to face any big, fast receiver with good hands. You can’t win if you let them get off the line clean, so you might as well try to hit them in that first five yards and at least disrupt the route.

But it does sound hilarious coming from probably the smallest DB on the team.

  21. dkeyser says: Oct 9, 2011 8:37 AM

I think instead of “Hit Him”, Moore actually ment “Bite at his ankles”…… ALL HAIL MEGATRON!!

  23. illlionsfan says: Oct 9, 2011 8:44 AM

Calvin Johnson quits once defenders get physical with him. It seems like every week he limps over to the sideline multiple times during a game whenever he falls down or gets hit.

Just a finesse guy, needs room, doesn’t want to be physical. Reminds me of Chris Johnson actually, another CJ. Are they related?

Im not sure he’s talking about himself hitting him. I believe he might be talking about the safeties. I know Merriman will be looking to get fined today, and Chris Hitman Harris would probably be happy to give up 15 yards and an automatic first down in order to hit a defenseless receiver today.

If I were coaching I would make every player swear on their career not to tell the media the truth, but I coach them to take PI and Personal Fouls on the first few passes. Heck Id even take 15 yards to hit Stafford a step or two late in hopes that he’ll get happy feet.

  30. tbbucs1638 says: Oct 9, 2011 9:14 AM

you bums that dnt kno football he isnt goin deep every play 6’5 means nothing on short passes or deep for that matter all u have to do is cover him right n he will get hit HARD n he will drop some balls

  31. balzosteel says: Oct 9, 2011 9:22 AM

As a Packer fan, I gotta say that this is awesome. I LOVE that the Lions are now a welcoming contender in the North. So much more refreshing hearing from Lions fans than the over-obnoxious Bears and Viking fans. Now raise up Detroit, and mushroom stamp these Bears into early hibernation!!! All that being said, the Packers are going to KILL the Falcons tonight.

  32. isphet71 says: Oct 9, 2011 9:56 AM

So am I right in thinking the Bears will not bother to cover him and instead go for a hit, which they may or may not actually get?

Sounds good to me. Or, complete double coverage sounds good to me to open up the rest of the team.

He’s right – Calvin is not unstoppable. But committing the resources needed to do it will kill your team elsewhere. I’ll take single coverage on Burleson and Young, and a single LB on Pettigres and Scheffler ALL day. Or night.

  33. lionsfanatic84 says: Oct 9, 2011 10:00 AM

The amount of lions haters here is humorous, I guess its against the law for lions fans to love their team openly for the first time in a decade without being embarrassed

  34. cowboynation919 says: Oct 9, 2011 10:00 AM

That is what every team should have been doing. Honestly, yes the Lion’s are 4-0 ONLY because of Calvin Johnson and Matt Stafford. Has anyone else really done anything? I live in Michigan and have seen tons of Lion’s games to know that CJ is an unbealivable WR but is very fragile. Making him pay for every catch should be top priority for every team. I’m not about injurying players but making him pay for catches is the only thing that is going to throw him off his game.

  35. mantastic54 says: Oct 9, 2011 10:03 AM

Moore is their nickel back, anyone that thinks he will be lined up 1 on 1 with Johnson for even one play this game is on drugs

  36. blabbaboo says: Oct 9, 2011 10:03 AM

Johnson’s only human, lay a shoulder in his gut a few times and he’ll be thinking more about the next hit than the ball. It’s very hard to go up for a ball when you know the db’s got a bullseye on your exposed ribs. Hope the Bears can stop him, the Lions need to start losing like normal.

  37. tatum064 says: Oct 9, 2011 10:06 AM

translation; Lions plan for Bears secondary: “Throw jump balls to Calvin Johnson.” Refs; “Throw flags when Johnson hits with Bears”

    List of what?

Fragile? He hasn’t been to bad but it’s hard not to be with someone completly missing a block and allowing you to get leveled. Not to mention this year our line is basically kids expect for 2 people.

I’m not one of the homers who will reply with my team is better and blah blah. I’m realistic. It would have been a miracle if he didn’t get hurt this year. Sucks but it’s the truth.

Not sure if that was what you meant.

  43. catchhester23 says: Oct 9, 2011 11:44 AM

Damn right hit him!! Remember tillman is covering him he is the best cb out there to stand a person up and punch the ball out while the safety comes over and lays the wr’s a$$ out doesn’t matter who it is. For those who don’t know who d.j. is? he will be the guy getting all the int’s after the tipped & hurried throws from the heat of peppers and melton on stafford. Which is understandable bet he still has nightmares of #90 giving him a “bear hug”

  44. dd393 says: Oct 9, 2011 11:51 AM

5’9″ vs. 6’5″? What is he going to do, kick him in the shins?

  45. catchhester23 says: Oct 9, 2011 12:49 PM

Where are people getting 5’9″ vs. 6’5″ morre isn’t covering johnson, tillman is 6’3″ vs. 6’5″ typical lions fans dreaming about some miss match. The real miss match will be forte lighting the lions defense up like he does every year! Big bad suh can’t kill cutler when he just gives it to forte because they can’t stop the run.

I’ll give ya that. Also blame Jason Garret. Yes Tony made the throws but there was no reason to be throwing at that time, so that’s on Garret.

Yeah how’d that work out for the Cowboys? The biggest mistake a player can make is to underestimate their opponent…Why you would ever underestimate Calvin Johnson is beyond me, but what ever sinks your boat.

Bears nickel back D.J. Moore at practice yesterday teaching his teammates his new philosophy:

Moore: “Make sure you hit him”

    Wooton: “Hit him right…got it.”

Moore: “over-think about what you’re doing”

Wooton: “Alright man, I’ll do it!”

    Moore: “Hit him”

Wooton: “Holy crap that hurt! I think I broke something!”

Moore: “I think we’ll be fine.”

Wooton: “FINE?! My hand is broken!”

Moore: “Should have hit him harder!”

    Wooton: “Good grief.”
