Roman Harper hit leads to Steve Smith-Malcolm Jenkins fight

Pittsburgh Steelers v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

Tempers flared in Carolina today, and it should come as no surprise that the hot-tempered Steve Smith was in the middle of things — but Smith had every right to be angry when he was on the receiving end of a cheap shot after scoring a touchdown.

It all started with a great play by Smith, who out-jumped Jabari Greer to catch a Cam Newton pass, then shoved Greer to the ground and raced to the end zone for a touchdown. Smith had clearly already crossed the goal line when Saints defensive back Roman Harper drilled him, drawing a penalty for a late hit.

At first Smith didn’t react, but when players from both teams got into a scrum in the end zone, Smith began fighting with Saints defensive back Malcolm Jenkins. Smith ended up yanking Jenkins by the facemask, and players on both teams were pushing and shoving. Newton was among the players who ran into the end zone to get into the middle of things.

Harper was the only player called for a penalty (15 yards on the ensuing kickoff), and no one was ejected. But it was an ugly scene that’s likely to result in several players being fined.

Not really, if it was the NHL they would have squared up and fought it out, not have the equivalent of a gang initiation in the end zone.

Into the middle of things? he was pulling steve smith away from jenkins and was on the outside of the scrum the entire time. WTF?

Panthers throw a clear punch during a dead ball at end of half and no flag. Refs lost control of this one

Steve Smith thought he was in his own locker room.

  10. 4t9er says: Oct 9, 2011 2:48 PM

@postfixer, why don’t you just watch the NHL then. I saw worse fights in the NHL for no reason.

  12. panthers34 says: Oct 9, 2011 2:56 PM

Even more classless was Graham’s flop at the end of the half, guys in the wrong sport.

What a surprise… More dirty antics from a dirty team.

  14. pastabelly says: Oct 9, 2011 3:18 PM

No need to dump on the NHL. After football, best sport out there and great playoffs. NHL has too many cheap shot artists and a bigger problem than the NFL. Goodell ahead of curve on cleaning up his sport.

i’ve never NOT liked the Saints before, but today’s game really disappointed me… Harper’s hit, Ingram taunting a veteran Chris Gamble, and Graham flopping and taunting as well.

Overall, very classless performance by the Saints. But that was a good, fun game to watch.

Biggest play of the game, Why in the world did the Panthers try a bomb to Steve Smith on 3rd and 2 late in the fourth quarter? That cost them the game. Why not just hand it to Stewart and let him beast it for a couple?

Live and learn. The Panthers are gettin better.

Harper’s hit was a cheap shot. But Smith should have been ejected for going after Jenkins like that. Threw a bunch and nearly yanked his head off.

At least go after the right guy.

Steve Smith has never been accused of being a rocket scientist.

And the Panthers defense still can’t stop anyone.

Is Cam Newton a rookie??? Smitty is a BEAST!!! Period!!!

Vikings fan here… I could care less who Smith goes at in that situation. If Jenkins didn’t want to get his facemask pushed around he shouldnt have been near the cheap shot in the end zone. Just saying, anything goes when you put yourself in dumb spots. It’s kind of like having bad dumb friends in high school that always get you in trouble even tho you’re just trying to help your friends / team

  23. stevenfbrackett says: Oct 9, 2011 7:01 PM

I am beginning to wonder what it would take for someone to get ejected in the NFL. My best guess us to take that cheap shot on a ref. And even then, I would be very hesitant to take that bet.

This is easily the stupidest comment I’ve ever read on PFT….and I’ve read a lot.

I give credit to Dante Wesley and the Pathers in 2009 vs Tampa for cheap shots (Clifton Smith) and being ejected from a football game. Look it up! Nice Shot Dante! BTW, nobody likes the Panthers anyway.

Classless move by Roman Harper. He knows better than that. I hate to see that from a high character team like the Saints. Bad move by Steve Smith to grab Malcolm Jenkins by the face and start stuff, as well. Difference is, no one is surprised by that coming from Smith. Thats who he is. Harper needs to avoid getting his team a penalty for no reason.

The saints a high character team? Let me give you advice stay off the crack. The Saints are far from high character esp when your Franchise QB wants enough money to pretty much guarantee your 1 super bowl was a fluke. Harper pulling a cheap shot like that surprises me little the Saints are known for those. As for the footage of Smith beating Jenkins who the hell has footage before that to show what Jenkins did. He is a defensive guy and if the Saints he can’t handle a WR beating his ass and Harper can’t handle his team getting beat on a long TD they need to quit. The Saints are about as classless arrogant and stupid as their fans with their preschool aged chant of “who dat” and really wanting to live off the past. Steve Smith sure he has hit a teammate before but damn that was 2008. It would be like arresting you for vandalism you could have committed 20 years ago. Let it go, cause believe me there is plenty of Dirty plays by the Taints on youtube. To put it simple you blind homer. If smith is fined or suspended for that Harper’s should be longer cause he took a cheap late him (intentional) on a WR in the middle of a TD celebration. Don’t be surprised if Harper sits next week, but as it has been stated another Dirty antic from a Classless (far from high character) Dirty team.

A fluke Super Bowl??? LMAO I’m guessing you’re a sour Vikings fan. Steve Smith got what he deserves, last season he went to the bench talking smack to our coach and Smith shoves his fingers in Harpers facemask. He got what he had coming to him.

Or you can get ejected by just looking at Tom Brady wrong!!
