Chad Clifton won’t be back anytime soon

Chad Clifton AP

The Packers are about to find out how valuable Chad Clifton truly was to the team.

The left tackle is going to be out a while with a hamstring injury. Coach Mike McCarthy only said at his Monday press conference that it would take “weeks” until the team knew exactly how long Clifton would be sidelined.

McCarthy confirmed the injury was “significant.”  The team is not considering putting Clifton on injured reserve, but McCarthy made it sound like Clifton won’t be back anytime soon.

The Packers may get second year tackle Bryan Bulaga back from his knee injury this week. It’s uncertain if Bulaga will play Clifton’s left tackle spot when healthy, or stay on the right side.

Green Bay found a way to win on Sunday night despite Clifton’s injury. Backup tackle Marshall Newhouse has looked surprisingly competent this season.

Still, we’d expect Aaron Rodgers‘ protection to become one of the dominant storylines in Green Bay’s otherwise perfect start to the season.

Clifton is a true OL. Ill be suprised if he doesnt retire after this year. Clutch when hes healthy but jsut cant seem to stay that way.

  2. 1stngoal says: Oct 10, 2011 4:59 PM

The organization has been high on Newhouse’ ability as a tackle for some time now. Apparently he has very good feet for the position. I wouldn’t say he’s as good as Cliffy, of course, but the Packers should be OK at the tackle position even with the loss of Clifton, only time will tell…

Don’t think bulaga is a rookie anymore. These are the kinds of things that separate bloggers from real writers.

Most overrated lineman in the NFL. Due to the fact that he blatantly holds on every single play. I hope he gets back soon so Jared Allen can bull rush passed him for 7 sacks in 2 games like he did in 2009.

is he still out from the Warren Sapp hit?

Seriously? Im not a Packer fan and even I know Bulaga is in his second year. So yea, he is not a rookie.

  9. gilbridehater says: Oct 10, 2011 5:04 PM

Aaron Rodgers can have 3 people protecting him and still throw for 400+ yards a game. The guyn isnt human!

  10. warvette says: Oct 10, 2011 5:07 PM

it’s terrible to lose such a guy, but in ted thompson and mike mccarthy we trust. (that said, i know packers fans who STILL resent tt and mm for that whole qb change thing)

Next man up (until clifton is back).
Marshall gonna have to step up and hold the fort.

Bulaga only had one rookie season and it was last year.

Have the Rams next weekend, Vikings the weekend after, then the bye.

Chad, you are a warrior. I hope you have the healing powers of Reggie White, and get back on the field sooner rather than later.

I am extremely concerned, but I have to say, I was very impressed with what Sherrod and Newhouse showed last night.

We might just have 4 good Ts.

Ouch! That hurts….but the team adjusted very well on the fly last night.

  19. calloustongue says: Oct 10, 2011 5:33 PM

I’ve been in awe of Clifton’s ability to hobble through the week and play some great LT on Sunday the last year and a half. I had a feeling this day would come. The guy is a warrior, hope he makes it back.

I’m glad the Pack has a great GM in TT that went against all the percieved “needs” and stocked depth at T in the first round of the last two drafts. Newhouse looks more than capable, Bulaga is coming back, and Sherrod showed why he was a first round pick. Losing a savvy vet like Clifton hurts, but it’s not as if the Packers don’t have the depth to plug the next guy up in, and not miss a beat.

  20. vikescry1 says: Oct 10, 2011 5:35 PM

rookie? bulaga? umm no sherrod is the rookie… find a new job.

  21. dwhitehurst says: Oct 10, 2011 5:35 PM

Schematically, losing Clifton will be a challenge for the Packers no doubt.

The one very viable danger is if Rodgers goes down to injury because of it.

Psychologically though, it could help them, keep them humble and focused, trying to overcome rather than simply resting on a plateau. This Packers team seems to thrive on adversity, as we’ve throughout last season and into this season. I mean, losing both bookend OT’s and THEN coming back from 14-0 to win at Atlanta? That’s one of the things that so kool about this team…a credit to the coaches for being able to adapt on the fly to ingame adversity.

  22. virger says: Oct 10, 2011 5:36 PM

this is basically tauscher’s situation from last year, and that ended up working out pretty well for GB. need to get bulaga back soon, though.

Bulaga should be back next week. He was ready to play this week but the doctors wanted to be extra cautious. Newhouse is pretty good and can hold up his end. Sorry Clifton was injured but we’ll be just fine.

Yeah, I imagine Rodgers is terrified of a defense that has let major leads completely disappear in the second half…to the overrated Chargers, mediocre Bucs, unproven Lions and the crappy Chiefs.

  28. dburgoyne says: Oct 10, 2011 6:20 PM

Bulaga is expected to return for the Rams game. Great to get the young guys some experience. After last year this team is no stranger to injuries. McCarthy knows how to handle this team.

There is no way to sugar-coat this….this is not good news since he protects Rogers blind side and is extremely competent. Yes, it’s possible that someone will adequately fill in but you don’t lose a tackle like Clifton and not have any negative impact (all it takes is one of those blind side hits to knock Rogers out for awhile).

    ———

It’s a tribute to Cliffy that he came back at all after that hit. I was sure his career was over. That was one dirty hit. Sapp left his feet and lauched himself for that hit and then Gruden defended him. They were no where near the play and Sapp blindsided him big time. My opinion of both Sapp and Gruden dropped to zero after that. I still don’t like them.

wonder if this is the same hamstring injury andre johnson suffered.

  35. packersrule52 says: Oct 10, 2011 6:51 PM

@firegoodell- Clifton didn’t play in either of those 2009 games. The first guy he faced was Daryn Colledge, who was our starting LG who got shifted over in Clifton’s absence. The second time around he faced T.J. Lang, who a rookie, and is now starting at LG.

So yeah, he racked up 7.5 sacks against a couple of OG’s playing out of position…impressive.

You probably would be surprised to learn that Jared “I pad my stats against terrible LT’s Allen has exactly 1 sack against Clifton in ALL of their matchups, including when Allen was on KC.

Don’t go letting those facts get in the way though..

Ummm…I Don’t even know where to start with this. First I am pretty sure Clifton did not play the first game where your mullet king had 4.5 sacks. Second Clifton was a pro-bowler last year. So that means other players thought he was alright but hey what do they know right. Third Allen has been a little quiet the last couple years. Forth keep living in 2009 that was the last time the queens were relevant. Fifth how does laaasst fing place taste? Good luck with your future endeavor to combat your rampant ignorance and feel free to ask someone else for help.

  40. packercpa says: Oct 10, 2011 9:34 PM

As I tell my whining Viking friends. You can beat us twice every year and Jared Allen can have as many sacks as he wants as long as the Packers win the Super Bowl and the Vikings continue to suck. I am not sure we will win the Super Bowl, but I know we will not suck as bad the Vikings will for the next few years. No QB, no WRs and a defense getting older.

You whats really funny or sad (depending on your perspective). The fact that Allen has done nothing since that game.

since that game in “2009″ he’s lucky to have 7 sacks since then.

Come on man. Clifton was out for both of those games. Jared Allen was working against Daryn College and Allen Barbre- both of whom are gone now.

I guess you forgot the 2010 season… when Clifton played both games against the Vikes and shut Allen down like a bank on Sunday.

No, what’s funny or sad is what an idiot you are. The “fact” is Allen had four more sacks that year and double digit sacks in 2010.

I guess he must be lucky then since he has more than 7 sacks this year alone, much less total since that game in 2009.

But hey, keep making comments though; we all need a good laugh now and then.

Actually, it might get better – Chad has never been a great run blocker. Marshall will be fine – they knew going into this season that Chad would probably go down for at least a couple of games. I’m fine with Newhouse and Bulaga protecting Aaron.
