Every loss hurts, but some losses hurt more than others. Each week, we pick out the most painful defeat to crown the weekend’s biggest loser.

Previous winners include the Chiefs, Jaguars, and Eagles.

Let’s count down some of this week’s other nominees before getting to the winner:

5. Falcons: They expected to take the next step this year, but they have taken a step back. Best case scenario: They get into the playoffs and have to play in Lambeau.

4. Bears: Lovie Smith said the Lions game would tell him a lot about the team, and it did.

3. Bucs: Rising teams don’t lose by 45 in San Francisco.

2. Cardinals: The Vikings loss will go down as the game the Cardinals realized this year isn’t so different from last year.

And the worst loss of the weekend goes to ...

The New York Giants will remember the Seahawks loss in late December. While we’re busy figuring out tiebreakers in a four-way NFC East race, Tom Coughlin will be having flashbacks to the game that got away.

The Giants built their 3-1 start on avoiding mistakes. They turned the ball over five times against Seattle. They are a team that wants to run the ball, and stop the run. Seattle stuffed New York’s running game, while Marshawn Lynch gashed them.

They knocked Tarvaris Jackson out of the game, and Seattle’s backup Charlie Whitehurst helped Seattle win in New York.

“This is about as miserable a feeling here as we’ve had in a long time,” coach Tom Coughlin said after the game.

This game that got away figures to be a miserable memory for the Giants all season long.
