The pitchforks are out in Philadelphia

Eagles Football AP

The Eagles haven’t fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo or brought in a defensive consultant. Yet.

The Philadelphia media is looking for the housecleaning to start higher up in the food chain anyhow.  Here are some actual headlines from the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News about the team’s head coach.

(Yes, FOX, that means you can use them in your telecast.)

Reid Running out of Time

Go time for Reid?

Reid clueless on how to fix Eagles D

Birds should scrap wide-nine approach

It’s starting to look like Andy Reid’s final season in Philadelphia

Yes, these are all for different articles.

Finally, an interactive poll asks fans whether Andy Reid should be fired during the season.  12,493 people responded as of this writing. 59.6% say Reid should go.

Reid has faced ugly times before. In 2008, the team was 5-5-1 and people thought he could get canned.  The Eagles rallied to make the NFC Championship.  In 2009, the team was 5-4 before winning six straight games to get into the playoffs.

The hole is bigger this year. The expectations are greater.  An inseason change is asinine; Reid has helped pull the Eagles out of the darkness before and he deserves the chance to do it again.

We can only imagine what the headlines will say if he fails.

Ready for the cure all. Juan Castillo is clueless. Somebody PLEASE reach out and talk to Monte Kiffin. I beg you Eagles. Second, the LB and safety play have been horrendous. Why isn’t DRC and Joselio Hanson on the field much? DRC can cover a TE from the safety position. Nnamdi doesn’t need help if you let him do his thing. Joselio I’m sure could play safety as well. Nate Allen and Page stink. Let the LB’s stay in and protect against the run and that is all. Let DRC be one on one with the TE or slot guy and Joselio gets the TE . No safeties deep at this point. Isn’t that why you have 2 shut down corners???? Last, where is Brian Dawkins when you need him

The Eagles problems are quite complex and need to be looked on a per topic basis. Firstly, The Wide 9 approach in itself is only part of the larger issue: team cohesiveness. This has been lacking since the departure of a few veterans in the middle of the field. 2011 Eagles are this year’s 2010 Cowboys. Reid’s time has come. See John Fox/ Jeff Fisher / any 10 years + coach who’s team is declining. Especially in Philly- where they have questioned his late game pressure coaching decisions for years. Reid has always been aloof and standoffish with players, and the new ones clearly don’t hear his message..not to mention the multitude of contract issues that are lingering. Anything short of the playoffs will certainly end in a parting of the ways, as well it should.

Perhaps they can ask Castillo? I hear 11 years on the offensive line is the equivalent to staying at a Holiday Inn Express.

I blame the Phillies. The last few weeks have been some of the worst times in Philly Sports History…just ask my wife about my behavior, and she’ll concur. All we wanted was one stupid super bowl so we can die happy, and I blame the team for saying “Super bowl or bust.” Don’t fire Andy yet…if we lose to the Skins I’ll be buying the Hockey Package.

I have been a big Reid supporter over the last 13 years he has consistently been successful and although he has never won a Superbowl I always thought of him as a top 5 coach. There is no point to fire him mid season because who do they have to replace him?

Having said that I think he may be reaching a point where the team needs change. I think he may have lost the players. In that past after a tough loss the team usually rebounded and that has not at all been the case this year with arguably the most talented team he has ever had.

He deserves a lot of blame for the season thus far (poor draft picks the last 2 seasons, O line coach to DC, late round LBs who are all green and a green LB coach on top of that, costly mental mistakes on the field) but ultimately the players are also making a lot of stupid mistakes that coaches have nothing to do with (seriously no NFL player should need to be reminded not to jump offside on 4th and 1 when everyone knows they are just trying to get you to jump).

Would Gruden or Cowher improve this team…I’m not so sure but going the rate this team is we probably will find out…sooner rather than later.

as an Eagles fan since the Dick Vermeil/Ron Jaworski/Wilbert Montgomery years, I know the pros and cons of Reid, and think he has earned the right to make what he can of this season. But his (and the FO’s) maddening tendency to neglect one position has spread to the entire D. and tendency to mis-utilize talent (see: Nnamdi as exhibit A) seems to have spread to the entire middle of the defense…and I do think that even with the turnovers, if they had a halfway decent D they’d be 3-2 or even 4-1 at this point, they score enough points and control the ball enough to win.

I do think if AR goes, Roseman and Banner have to go to too.

The Guy has had the ungrateful Philly fans in contention for over a decade now. As a Browns fan it saddens me when guys get treated like crap when things go wrong, when he’s done alot. I’m sure he made a mistake with his defensive coordinator decision, maybe he should have stuck with Kolb and traded Vick while his stock was high. Kolb wouldn’t be getting hurt all the time.

  23. yevrag3535 says: Oct 11, 2011 12:02 PM

This is over 13 years of this same old stuff. He will never change. People have to look at the fact tht other teams have figured him out entirely. He has nothing up his sleve anymore. No matter who is at QB, RB it all looks the same from year 2001 or 2011, O-line same thing, never more than a bunch of guys just playing ball together for a paycheck. He must go and the Eagles can quickly get on track with anyone new at this point.

As a Redskins fan, I hate and love this. I love it because seeing the Eagles get taught the lesson that Dan Snyder seems to have learnt (i.e. fantasy football doesn’t work in real life) is great. However, I hate it because every year the Redskins seem to give a previously-left-for-dead team life. We gave the Giants life and they went on to win the superbowl. We helped Detroit break their losing streak and they’ve ended up 5-0. I hope, this year, we help the Eagles get where they’ve worked so hard to get: failure!

Stability at head coach is important, and these are the times when cities need to stand behind their coach and bear patience while he sorts this mess out and makes the changes that need to be made as he’s done so many times before.

THIS is why every other football fan thinks Vikes fans are morons.

They actually think a coach who goes to a Super Bowl once in 12 seasons is an UPGRADE.

Andy Reid has done less with more than any coach in his era, but you’re lining up for this guy after finally getting rid of Childress.

And, any time a free agent was up for grabs the Egirls fans laughed long and hard at how they either landed the fish or had em on the line. You could not read anything on PFT, or watch ESPN and hear how this is the year for the Egirls.

Now, how pathetic the fans have become. The band wagon fans who used to post and talk all the smack have gone into hiding and whats left is fans who now want to run the egirls and have all these great ideas of what to do with the “team”. Like you have a job working in the Egirls front office or are part of the coaching staff. Dag, would you all shut the hell up already? You are losing. Your the same bright fans who were screaming super bowl just a short few weeks ago and NOW you dont like how things are done. Suck it up city of brotherly love.

As a Giants fan, I love every minute of this. But firing Andy Reid would be outright stupidity. He picked a bum D coordinator. Coughlin has picked two God awful D coordinators, has stuck by our mediocre O coordinator forever, and has the worse special teams coach in the NFL. Philly needs to cut Andy some slack. One bad coordinator pick is a Giants fan dream. The only time Coughlin really got it right was when he stole Spags from Philly. Andy’s one mistake should not define his career. He’s done far more good than bad. He bet big on Castillo and lost. It happens. We Giants fans know that better than anyone.

Ok, for starters, no Philadelphia fan ever said the words “Dream Team”, get off it. A newly aquired bench player uttered those infamous words, and honestly he is more known for his poor decision making skills more than his eloquent speaking skills.

Second, everyone from outside of Philadelphia that is sticking up for Reid, YOU HAVE NO CLUE! We have been dealing with his arrogance, failure to commit to the run, horrible time management, and bonehead playcalling for more than a decade…WE’VE HAD ENOUGH! His drafts are for the most part very lackluster. For every Westbrook (3rd Rd) and Trent Cole (5th) there are 15 Danny Watkins and Freddy Mitchells. The guy hits on 5th rounders more than firsts…that just doesn’t make sense.

He is not just the coach, he is the ultimate descision maker on every aspect of the team, a team that under his leadership has won just as many rings as the Bengals, Seahawks, Jaguars, etc etc etc. Being competitive but ALWAYS falling short just doesn’t cut it anymore.

I wish him and his family well but its just time for both parties to move on!

As an Eagles fan, I’ll always appreciate Big Red for the fun seasons in the early to mid 2000s, and the improbable run in 2008. But this guy has just been horrible since the NFC championship game against the Cardinals in January of ’09.

I’m of the opinion that Andy never quite mastered playcalling, clock management, the challenge system, or Sundays in general. However, I think he gets a bum rap as far as talent development, drafting, and preparation goes. People will talk about the whiffs like Freddie Mitchell, Todd Pinkston, Tony Hunt, Corey Simon, etc. But this guy has done some seriously impeccable late-round drafting and has developed otherwise mediocre quarterbacks and with a flick of the wrist transformed them into 2nd round picks.

In short, the man belongs behind a desk. In Philly, preferably.

Exactly. Wenever. This is all on Reid. He runs the whole Eagles organization. His whiffed on countless defensive draft picks. Horrible clock management. Horrible playcalling. Horrible in game adjustments. Hires a OL coach as a defensive coordinator. Reid is an average coach that A. Built up his coaching resume when the entire NFC East was TRASH. He’s not coaching against Dave Campo and Steve Spuirrer anymore and B. Got bailed out by JJ’s defenses time and time again. Any real Eagles fans have seen his flaws for years. He peaked in 2004. Here’s the crazy part…If the Eagles beat the Skins on Sunday and limp into the bye at 2-4. They are still only a 1.5 games out of first…

Exact words as Vince Young? Maybe not.

Unusual amount of preseason giddiness about the talent the Eagles were accumulating on paper? Check.

Predictions of domination with that depth of talent? Check.

Not that I would’ve expected any other team’s fans to react much differently if it had been their team on that offseason spending spree.

But the recent history of the NFL is littered with teams who were powerhouses on paper in the summer, and then just couldn’t put it together when it mattered.

It’s also what’s so great about this game, that every year has its surprises of teams that looked awful on paper and aren’t, and vice versa. Gotta love the unpredictability. (If you’re not an Eagles fan right now, that is….)

Coaches and players couldn’t interact during the lockout, but he had 136 days of idleness to find a qualified DC. I don’t mean to pick on Castillo, but the guy hasn’t worked a defense in any capacity in more than two decades.

This is a multibillion-dollar business. We all know the adage: Offense wins games and defense wins championships. How does a head coach for a team that’s created such high expectations turn over the half of his team responsible for winning championships to a guy who has no modern-day experience coaching defense???? The Eagles have several problems, but that’s the easiest to fix. Hire a real DC.

not only has vick sucked the last 7 games…

lets look at the last 2 season 2nd halves he was in atlanta.

he gets complacent and doesnt work.

in 2005 atlanta was 6-2. then they endured a massive upset at home to the packers. then tampa. they bear the lions, which atlanta doesnt do often. carolina hammered them. atlanta then beat the saints, then got handled by chicago, tampa and carolina (again).

tampa went from 5-3 to 11-5. carolina continued from 6-2 to 11-5. atlanta fell by the wayside, to 8-8.

in 2006 atlants was 5-2, then lost to detroit, browns, balto and the saints. the lions/saints losses quite embarassing. they rebounded to beat wash and tampa, only to close out losing to dallas, carolina and philly. this was the first full post-katrina season, and the saints swept the falcons.

in both years, vick failed to lead his team to the playoffs after promising starts. maybe he was too preoccupied with dog fighting… if so, what is his excuse now?

if you look at his last 20 some starts before he was sidelined due to legal issues… he didnt compare well to joey harrington.

Reid is the only one who can win with the Eagles, just like McNabb was the only coach was could quarterback it to any level of success.

Look at Pittsburgh, they never replaced Cowher. Good bye to the Steelers competing for titles.

And Carolina probably wishes they had kept Fox-Delhomme, they look like thy have no future.

Letting go of Favre and hiring McCarthy was a black eye on the franchise, they’ve been dreadful since.

Pats should’ve kept Drew Bledsoe and held off on hiring that failure from Cleveland.

These scenarios provide a powerful lesson…when you are middle of the pack, stay that way. Don’t try to hope for something better, because there’s a chance you’ll get even worse.

Settle for B- performance, because nothing can ever or will ever get better than what you have right now.

And that attitude is exactly what’s not killing that other struggling team called the United States of America at the moment.

Skins fan here. I don’t understand why everyone is trying to blame Vick. Are y’all watching these games? He is composed, he hits the receivers in the chest/hands on the regular, has learned to throw the ball away, is rushing well, etc. Yes, he is prone to have the ball escape him by carrying the rock like a loaf of bread, but that has been consistent over his career. The problem with these Eagles, is that they are not catching sure balls, and when they do they keep getting them stripped. Their linebackers and DLine are small, and in no way can stop the run…they get tired from the run, and get beat on long passes. The Eagles D coordinator looks like a deer caught in the headlights…or should I say the D thats being called is making the players look like deer caught in the headlights. If Andy Reid truly is the problem, I feel that that issue should be addressed in the OFF SEASON…nothing will make your team go belly up more than firing him midseason and promoting an interim head coach. Reid is well liked by the players, and I don’t think being 1-4 is fully his fault. You want to scapegoat Reid, do it after the season.

How about the 5-0 defending Super Bowl champions? Or the surprise 5-0 Detroit Lions (6-10 a year ago)? What about the 4-1 New Orleans Saints, whose only loss came to the Packers? Have we not noticed that the 49ers, who were also 6-10 last year, are 4-1? How about the first place Buffalo Bills, who have already matched their 2010 win total sitting at 4-1? And the Chargers, who have been notorious for slow stars in recent years are 4-1. How many stories have we seen about any of these teams?

  114. mhalt99 says: Oct 11, 2011 2:48 PM

The vocal minority of eagles fans that howl against Reid are possibly the dumbest people on the planet. They are the same crybabies that moaned about “how terrible” McNabb was during his Pro Bowl years in Philly – the definition of terrible to them was that he was not Peyton or Brady….

Yes we have yet to win a Super Bowl, we have one of the best coaches in the game who has given the city and the franchise consistency. Look no further than Bill Cowher to find a coach who did the same for a great many seasons without winning the big game.

There were many big names signed in Philly to short term contracts that on the surface seem like huge financial commitments. The reality of the situation is that the Eagles have gotten much younger in a matter of two seasons and have some growing pains.

True, Juan Castillo was a very dumb move. He was an average offensive line coach who Reid needed to get rid of and out of loyalty gave a shot to run the defense. There is no way to spin this in a positive light – it was very high risk and very low reward. If Reid wanted to scrap the whole defense of Jim Johnson he should have hired Rob Ryan. Even if Rob Ryan failed miserably and put out a worse defense then the birds have now (not possible) he would have been cheered as we all revere the Ryan name in Philly (see comments above). Horrible move by Reid to allow Castillo to run the D, but hardly a reason to fire Andy Reid.

So keep moaning and complaining about having a coach that has brought you to the Super Bowl and the NFC championship a bunch of times, not to mention a guy that has owned the NFC East for stretches during his tenure and a coach that has a very respectable record against the Cowboys. I am SURE we will end up with a better coach EVENTUALLY….of course eventually could mean 20-30 years.

Signed a lifelong birds fan who knows for who and for what the eagles are playing for.

Look at how bad McNabb is without Andy Reid, and his schemes that hide all of McNabb’s flaws? The Eagles are terrible now, and that whole “Dream Team” thing came from a guy who is not a starter or even a factor on that club so shut up! One bad start and you want him gone? Not so fast. Why are the opponents allowed to be close enough so that opportunistic strikes by defenses keep resulting in Eagles losses? The Eagles are either not scoring enough points, or not managing the clock well enough on offense.

If there’s a weakness somewhere, your offense should be good enough to compensate for it. (See: new England Patriots.) The “O” is scoring points, but they’re not managing the games to wins. Combined with their turnovers, that means they’re failing.

It’s not good enough to just “do your job” – elite teams go beyond when needed. The Saints, Packers, and Patriots have all modeled that this season. They don’t whine about their defensive breakdowns.

Sure a re-tooling of the DEF is necessary, but there is no need to do that on both sides of the ball when there is that much talent already there. A fresh coach already familiar w/ the WCO gives the birds the best chance to continue to compete rather than potentially having next season be a wash as well while players get used to a new offensive philosophy…

My only point is that what was once amusing banter is now just brainless parroting. Mix it up a little! The front office let Reid make big changes in the offseason. It would be foolish and counterproductive of them to give him only a few games to get them sorted out. If you hire someone else, you’re even further in the hole.

The guy won the division just last year and has been consistently successful – he deserves the balance of the season to try to pull the team out of this. He shouldn’t be run out of town because of the typical fan opinion that the only two possible results to a season are Super Bowl win and utter failure. If he can’t get this fixed and they go 5-11, then fine, we can talk about it then. But firing the coach midseason is always a panic move.

I’m a Patriots fan. I’m sure most of you have read posts on PFT that Pats fans are loud, obnoxious and arrogant.

I think the Jets fans are loud, obnoxious and arrongat.

Frankly, you could insert any team name in that sentence and it would be true.

Except the Raiders fans. They’re degenerate freaks. If don’t believe me, just ask them. They’ll tell you they’re like Zed and Maynard. And proud of it.

Love the “Eagles should scrap the wide 9 Defense” headline. No, they should get a linebacker – or two – that can actually play.

“Eagles fans will see how bad their qb’s really are once Reid leaves”

Are you kidding me? None of the plays Andy Reid designs work. Our QB’s make plays by scrambling to get away from pressure and finding random guys.

These are the same morons that said we’d regret trading away Donovan McNabb. Worry about your own team.

  143. derekjetersmansion says: Oct 11, 2011 5:49 PM

This happens every year in Philadelphia. Maybe not as loud, but every loss calls for some people to scream that they should fire Reid.

I will say that this could be the first year where the expectations were too high. Part of that is because Howie signed every name that was out there, naively. In other words, I pin this on Howie, too. You can say Juan is inexperienced, but he’s in the room for every meeting. Howie hasn’t been around even 2 years.

The point about expectations being too high is that Reid has been a master media manipulator. This team has always exceeded expectations, starting with the playoff run in 2000. No one saw that coming. No one saw ‘going to 5 straight NFC championship games’ coming. Especially from a no-name position coach like Reid.

The Reid era is defined by being good, but not good enough. Everyone knew they were good. This year, the signings threw them off. In other words, if they had done nothing, they’d be a 9-10 win team. That’s the frustrating part.

It got out of hand (with Howie throwing Reid all these guys) because of the lockout and its timing. If they signed these players in a normal offseason, with the right prep time, they’d be a much different team. Reid is a top-2 offensive mind in this league, for the most part.

Reid sounded like he was toast during his press conference yesterday. He went through the rote “we’ve gotta get better, and the coaches and I will talk”, but he didn’t seem to believe it and had a haunted look in his eyes.

The last time I saw a coach seem so on the brink was Childress last year and he was gone about 5 weeks later.

They say the ownership/management wouldn’t cut him out during the season, but if the Eagles keep this up, he will be gone at the end of the year. He is looking cracked at this point.

I won’t begrudge anyone for ripping on the Birds. Most Eagles fans have been doing the same. My original comment was that recycling the same old tired jokes isn’t much fun when there’s so much material to pick from. “Dream Team”? “Nightmares”? You guys are amateurs.

Think you just answered your own question. Championship QBs either don’t have those flaws, or fix them. QBs with persistent flaws who don’t fix them are second-rate QBs, which is what Vick is.

    ——————————————

While I agree with your kevpft logic, I do not agree with your statement. Vick has been losing the ball less and less with total fumbles and with interceptions. You talk about flawless QB’s or ones who fix? How about Trent Dilfer QB’ing the 2000 Ravens to a SB win plus tons of flaws? How about Eli Manning possessing many flaws and leading the NYG to a SB win? Brad Johnson while in Tampa winning a SB? You can’t say that those listed QB’s were flawless…or worked on their flaws to the point they wont the SB. They were on good balanced teams on all sides of the ball. Philly is not a good balanced team this year, so I’m saying stop blaming Vick…especially when he is balling more than anyone else on the team.

I wonder if we can officially state once and for all that signing Vick to a $100,000,000 contract was an epic mistake.

The dude was NEVER a serious NFL QB. He was a top, top athlete lining up at QB.

I am not sure if Laurie was on a three-week bender this offseason, but the Vick signing was probably the most ridiculous he made this offseason. Despite what his fanbois say, Vick has never played at an elite level. He is an average passer with a rocket arm and the accuracy of a snub-nosed revolver. When he was young he could rush for mega-yards, but now that he has lost a step with age, he is nowhere as elusve as he once was. Vick had a career year last season, but they are called “career years” for a reason; they happen only once or twice in a career (much like Brett Favre’s first season with the Queens). Combine this silliness with trying to Snyder a Lombardi with a bunch of high-priced free agents and no off-season for them to sync, and the Eagles are going to be sitting at the bottom of the East in salary cap hell for the next few seasons.

One could surmise from this ridiculous spending spree resulting in a 1-4 start that maybe Laurie should lay off the Grey Goose during the offseason. However, the more esoteric among us believe that hiring an overrated, psychopatic animal killer likely wasn’t the greatest idea to ensure long-term success overall. Time and time again, karma proves to be a mean-spirited bitch, my friend.

I’ll sum it up for you in 8 words: Because they run the same stories every day.

I don’t necessarily blame PFT. Their readership is by and large teenage boys who want a little drama with their football.

    ———————————-

I get it. You’re upset with the constant stories about the Eagles collapse and think PFT and it’s readership should move on and focus their attention elsewhere, right?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure you picked the wrong site. You’re looking for a site that coddles the Eagles and lets everyone know things are going to be alright, and this ain’t the site for that. Man up and take the beating or go away – the stories won’t go away and neither will the readership that wants the “drama”. Wuss.

It always amazes me that people from other cities knock Philly fans for demanding a championship and for not being happy with simply a 10-6, 11-5 record and a one game exit from the playoffs. Been there, done that. What’s the point. Hanging an NFC East Banner is a joke. Eight teams do that every year in the NFL…Some organizations may be happy with sustained winning, but it gets old when your last game always ends in a defeat. Like being the bridesmaid but never the bride.

Yes, I’m looking for a site that coddles me and tells me everything is going to be okay. That’s why I take issue with PFT’s lack of relevant football coverage. Knucklehead.

    @realitypolice

You’re still missing the point. It isn’t that the Eagles 1-4 start isn’t news. The problem is simply that PFT has rarely shown the inclination to treat any story with relevant, useful knowledge of the game. I can only guess that this trend isn’t accidental, that it has more to do with readers like yourself, but as far as I know it could be that they are wholly incapable. Who knows. Who cares. Every now and again PFT runs a good article, and they’re generally pretty fast, which is why I still come here.

    Nice talking with you both.

The fact is that Andy Reid is in uncharted territory this season. Not since his 1st year in 1999 has the Eagles record been this bad. I’m throwing away the 2005 season where McNabb missed half the season with a sports hernia and T.O. ripped the team apart with his antics. This team’s defense is bad…even horrible, but the real reason they’ve lost 4 straight games is because of all of the turnovers on offense. Cut those in half and the team is sitting at 5-0 now.

Reid is a very good coach — but the extraordinarily high expectations of late have incited the Philadelphia morons …. much like the wrath meted out on Terry Francona after the Red Sox’ September nosedive.

Boston and Philly. Two miserable cities populated with more than their fair share of unsufferable buffoons and 315 pound know-it-alls.

At least Boston won some hardware ……… but somehow but for a fleeting moment, that didn’t seem to make the chowds any less bitter.

That region has a permanent case of red ass.
