Bears expected to bench Harris, Meriweather

AP

We mentioned this morning that changes were coming to the Bears starting lineup.

We knew the offensive line was getting a shakeup, and suggested perhaps one of the team’s veterans starting safeties would be benched.  It turns out both safeties will be benched.

Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune reports that Brandon Meriweather and Chris Harris are both expected to sit in favor of rookie Chris Conte and Major Wright for Sunday night’s game against the Vikings.

Harris didn’t seem ready upon his return from a hamstring injury. He’s seen as a team leader that some media talked up for a possible extension, but he struggled Monday night against Detroit. Meriweather seems to be struggling with the same problems he had in New England, too often missing tackles and giving up big plays.

The Bears have used five different starting safety combinations in six games.  It’s been a revolving door position in Chicago for years.

At some point, you wonder if it’s really the players who are at fault here.

  1. At some point, you wonder if it’s really the players that are at fault here.

Indeed. I do believe there is some silly coaching going on in the Windy City.

  2. They’re still keeping Martz? At this point I suspect that Martz must have something on Angelo that Angelo can’t afford to let out.

  3. Anyone else signing “Safety Dance” right now?

We can’t cover when we want to
    Calvin leaves us all behind
And Harris will bite on the double move
    Then Meriwether gets a fine

  4. Merriweather is garbage. Pure no talent garbage. Chris Harris is great. He’s just old. Im sure they can get some undrafted safeties to cover just as bad as these guys, they just won’t hit like these guys.

  5. Guess the self-proclaimed ‘party starter’ is going be kicking off the bash from da bench.

  6. Meriweather is a waste of 3.2 million. Goes for big hit, and misses. All the time. Harris looked like his conditioning and timing were off. Maybe it’s time to forget Twitter and start running and watching tape. Lovie needs to take the share of the blame for being a norrible talent evaluator, also. I’m surprised he didn’t try to sign Adam Archuleta again.

On the field yes it is, but the front office is the one putting these players out there.

  8. What’s that tell you. “At some point” . What you should say; Is the personell dept. and the GM have done a pathetic job of bringing in good talent. Jerry Angelo’s draft record speaks for itself. Bad, Bad , Bad…. I’ve said it before. The Bears are in the same boat as the Lions were under Matt Millen. TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE.
    Please George Mckaskey, Please.

  9. As much as Meriweather/The Party Starter deserves benching for awful play in both NE & CHI, the safety play by the Pats (outside of Pat Chung) has been horrific since his departure, too.

While he’s reckless and undisciplined, he’s still more serviceable than Sergio Brown back there through 5 weeks this season.

  10. The quality (or lack thereof) of the safety position is really killing this defense more than anything. Meriweather has been everything Pats fans warned us about. Already can’t stand him. Harris has experienced a significant drop off from last year; whether that’s due to injury, I can’t really say… but he does not look nearly as good this year.

No excuse for all the big plays given up this season. That kind of thing just didn’t happen last year, and I have to suspect that the rotation at safety is at the root of the problem.

One thing that should be mentioned is the fact that the Bears HAD a quality safety last year in Danieal Manning. Zero TDs allowed all season last year for Manning says a lot. Bears spent 4 years grooming him and then let him walk in the offseason. And now they have a major (no pun intended) problem at safety. Surprise, Surprise.

Damn, I’ve been dying to work in an Adam Archuleta reference! You beat me to the punch, well done.

Too bad they can’t put Dave Duerson’s brain into Meriweather’s body.

    Too soon?

Try to cover if we want to
Cus if we don’t nobody will
Then we get beat really deep
    and go hands over feet
at our expense, another highlight thrill

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Merriweather is garbage, but the sad part is that he has a LOT of talent. He just refuses to listen to or accept coaching.

  14. Cutler tries to pass when he has to
Or he will go run and hide
    Cuz his OLine sucks
    and ducks he just chucks
He wants to leave this game far behind

Bbbb Eeee Aaaa Rrrr Ssss BEARS Suck!

Meriweather is one uneducated football player……who still makes more than any of us in a lifetime…..god bless america

  16. 50 Different safety combinations in what is arguable the top 3 of positions needed to run the cover 2. They haven’t had a good one since when Mike Brown was healthy. And haven’t been able to draft anything but slow white safeties. I am white, so I can say this. Ha.

  17. The rock solid Vikings will leave a trail of cut players and fired coaches in their rearview mirror. Vikes have struggled under McLooser, but the Bears got worse in the offseason, almost seemed intentional. DeAngelooser is quite the leader.

    Packers Still Suck

  18. I am not a big Bears fan and do not regularly follow them. That said, the safety play on Monday night was noticeably bad even to a casual fan. It seems the Bears made a couple of serious errors during the off-season by letting their center and their safety leave for other teams. The offensive line play is obviously another weakness on this team.

Perhaps we are already seeing the heavy hand of Tim Ruskell. He ruined the Seahawks and now he is assisting in talent evaluation for the Bears.

A lot of the players he selects are too short, too light, and too slow for the NFL. But they all go to church

  19. Viking wide receivers will be running wide open all night. And watching the ball bounce into their hands or sail over their heads.

  20. Bears can take some solace in the fact that it was the Patriots who burned a 1st round pick on him. This one followed up a Maroney 1st round pick the previous year. To be fair, the other first round picks (with the exception of Watson) have been exceptional.

  21. At some point, you wonder if it’s really the players who are at fault here.

Why do I think that if Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu were back there we wouldn’t be having this discussion?

  22. Teams should never try to bring in a Belichick coached player as a starter – he simply does not teach good fundamental skills that translate outside of the Boston gimmick offensive and defensive schemes. He is so busy designing cute little trick plays for each player, that they do not develop skills that will translate to good football play for other teams. Randy Moss is a great example – BB basically ruined him, turning him from a player that was expected to play the entire field in Minnesota and Oakland, to a one-dimensional deep guy in Boston. By the time he left Boston, all his fundamental skills of how to get open, run crisp routes, and play over the middle were completely ruined.

  23. A lot of the players he selects are too short, too light, and too slow for the NFL. But they all go to church

    ——————————————

    Then get taken to school…

  24. Tim Ruskell assisting in talent evaluation is like Dane Cook giving lessons in humour. Or Lindsay Lohan teaching acting. etc etc

  25. This is almost the same team that won the conference last year, they really miss Olsen, but there is no excuse to be as bad as they are now.

  26. This is a great opportunity for two more Jerry Angelo draft picks (Conte and Harris) to fail.
Neither can play and they will show that on Sunday night.

    JERRY ANGELO IS TERRIBLE !

  27. “Perhaps we are already seeing the heavy hand of Tim Ruskell. He ruined the Seahawks and now he is assisting in talent evaluation for the Bears.”

The trouble goes deeper than that but that’s a good point.

What do you figure Angelo’s going to do off-season? Fire Lovie and hire Josh McDaniels as the new HC?

I’d disagree, but that’s just me. If Meriweather were still on the team, he’d be running INTO Brown, negating any positivity you could glean from him being there.

  29. he’s still more serviceable than Sergio Brown back there through 5 weeks this season.

    Sergio still has an upside.

    Merriweather a known quantity.

  30. In order for the Cover-2 defense to work you have to have a DT that can get pressure up the middle or stuff the run.
Tommie Harris could do that once but he is gone.

You have to have a play maker at Safety who can both stop the run and create turnovers.
Mike Brown was that guy to a T but he is gone.

You have to have a MLB that can drop deep into coverage and still go sideline to sideline to string out the run.
Brian Urlacher was and still is that player but like Cutler, he can’t do it alone and he is not 26 anymore.
That window has closed and the Cover-2 is old news. The league evolves and you have to evolve with it.

Like Martz forcing an offensive system that does not fit the personal, Lovie is forcing his defensive system like he still has the same players as the 2006 team.
It is time to clean house and start over and I would be really happy if that included new ownership.

  31. Time to clean house……fire Jerry, Tim & Lovie!!!!
    ***************************************************
Hey you forgot somebody…Ted Phillips their esteemed President. Show him the door too!

  32. YOu Bear Fans that Want Lovie and Martz gone are complete morons. You must not remember the days before Lovie..You relaize we have been to a Super bowl and 2 Nfc Championships in 5 years?? Were building a dynasty and when were healthy we wil beat anybody in the league like we did last year. Were 5 games removed from a NFC Championship!!! GIVE IT A REST!! Mike MArtz and Lovie are the best things that have happened to the Bears since Ditka and Payton if you cant see that your a fool..Mike Martz offfense got us to the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP and it took just 2 seasons..WoW Legends!! Bears most hated team in the Nfl because were the winniningest team..Its ok Haters..keep hating

  33. You can shuffle the crap around in a pile of crap but at the end of the day you still have a pile of crap.

  34. Ted Philips on down need to be gone. When u have the same issues year in and year out with no attempt to fix them.. heads need to roll. O-line has been an issue before Cutler got here.. WR has been an issue before Grossman or Orton was drafted.. Safety position has been $h*t since Mike Brown started getting hurt. Its pathetic. And amazing that they have been LUCKY enough to make it to the Super Bowl and NFC championships. As a Bears fan, I wish there was something I could do besides watch the same BS problems the last 5 years. But when u have an old bat, who doesn’t care about football, as an owner.. This is the result.
