Aaron Curry to start for Raiders this Sunday

Atlanta Falcons v Seattle Seahawks Getty Images

So much for easing Aaron Curry into his new surroundings.

The Raiders will not only have Curry in the lineup against the Browns on Sunday, he’ll be in the starting lineup. Paul Gutierrez of CSN California reports that Curry will start at weakside linebacker in his first game since being acquired in a trade with the Seahawks. Curry, who was a strongside linebacker in Seattle, will be replacing Quentin Groves in the starting lineup although Groves will likely play a fair amount if the Raiders decide to use Kamerion Wimbley at defensive end in place of the injured Matt Shaughnessy.

Sunday’s game will feature what’s sure to be an emotional memorial to the late Al Davis and Curry’s acquisition and immediate playing time are a fitting tribute to Davis. The Raiders have long been a team willing to roll the dice on players who washed out on other teams and Curry certainly qualifies after his disappointing Seahawks career.

I really have a feeling that Curry will have a revitalization of his career. I still have a hard time believing that this guy is really this big of a bust. I remember vividly the talk about him before the 2009 draft and was really worried about him being picked in my division.

I believe that a change in system or coaches will bring out the really talented and gifted player that Curry can be. Too bad it has to be on the Raiders.

It’s good to have him playing at will, lined up behind Lamarr Houston. Curry has always been good at sealing off the outside runs, which has long been a weakness with the Raiders’ D. How he fares on flat passes and open field tackles? That’s what the Raiders are gambling on.

    Curry-McClain-Wimbley… sounds nasty!

This trade reminds me of when Jonathan Vilma was traded from the New York Jets to the New Orleans Saints. He is a good player and it was a shrewd move by New Orleans.

Hopefully Curry succeeds in the 4-3 in Oakland at his natural position. His pass defense numbers are frighteningly bad, but hopefully those stats reflect him playing different roles than he was accustomed to in Seattle.

Seems almost unfair to Curry—no time to learn the defense. Then again, he had plenty of time to learn Seattle’s system.

Not trying to be stupid, I hope he comes around in Oakland and has a respectable career at least. Seems like a stand-up guy.

just got Hillis for my fantasy team. With Curry actually starting, he’ll have at least 500 rushing yards!!

RAIDER WAY…We don’t ease players in the lineup. We throw them on the field and tell them to come back a man. If you stand tall then you’re a Raider.. If you flinch then you we know you won’t last here.

wow! i fugured he’d get more than a little playing time but i’m surprised that he will be starting

I’m happy for the addition.. I’ve been upset these last 2 years seeing groves start instead of Thomas Howard. nothing against groves but I just think Howard was better talent wise… hopefully curry can become like wimbley

  12. cliffordc05 says: Oct 14, 2011 3:48 PM

Curry is a good guy. I still don’t understand what went wrong in Seattle. His first five games in his rookie year he was an impact player. After that…..nothing. Jim Mora might have some better insight as to Curry’s potential.

Time to pick up the Browns TE in fantasy for a swing spot

If that’s the “Raider way”, then that explains our horrible record for the last decade or so.

  16. pigskinswag says: Oct 14, 2011 3:54 PM

To be fair, think Curry was overdrafted more than he was a bust. The Seahawks took this guy #4 overall. You don’t draft a LB that high unless you’re pretty sure he’s going to have Lawrence Taylor type impact. It was especially foolish given the fact that the 2009 draft was deep with linebacker talent. Orakpo, Cushing, Clay Matthews, Laurinaitis – all taken after Curry and had far greater impact.

sounds like what texans fans were saying last week..
How did that game turn out for the texans?
People who play fantasy football have no favorite team.. I could never tot for a player to score alot of TDS against the Raiders..
If there is any Raider fans who play fantasy football then get out! You are Not a Raider.. A Raider would never root against his team

Put him in the right system and he will thrive. The kid was an animal at Wake and I know he can do it. I wish the Giants had the cap space to sign him, we really need the LB help.

I just hope Curry does well enough that Seattle gets that fifth rounder in 2003.

Kam Chancellor was drafted by the current Seattle management in the fifth round. All he’s done this year is get two picks, force two fumbles, tackle anyone with the ball who comes near him, and add an element of intimidation and raw physicality to the Seattle secondary with some big hits (I’m looking at you, Todd Heap).

If they can get a guy like that in the fifth round…bring on the fifth rounders!

Careful what you ask for Raider fans…..and don’t be disappointed when he misses out on a big play he should have executed.

As a Seahawks fan I liked what Curry’s potential could be, he just could not live up to it. Good luck in Raider Nation AC….

  24. hanifmiller says: Oct 14, 2011 4:09 PM

Im still not sure why the Eagles didnt take a chance on him. If the Eagles LB’s get punked again this Sunday and Curry has a good afternoon, Eagles nation is going to collectively vomit. I will be leading the vomit charge.

  25. sweetnlow44 says: Oct 14, 2011 4:31 PM

Eagles fans, rest assured, you’re better off without Curry. He’s a liability on the field. He’ll screw up far more plays than he’ll make.

  26. 1team1nation says: Oct 14, 2011 4:32 PM

In hindsight it’s easy to say Curry was drafted too high, comparing him to the success of the other linebackers that came out in the 2009 draft. It wasn’t Pete Carrol who drafted the guy, who’s been moving players in and out of Seattle like crazy. Curry didn’t work out in Seattle, so lets see if he actually turns it around in Oakland.

You obviously have never seen Quentin “Quittin’” Groves attempt to play linebacker. He is a DE who is way out of his element in space.

Desperate move by the Raiders. But their LB corps is their biggest liability.

I’m with you Hue… I’m a lifelong Packers fan and I went against Rodgers last week in FF. I kept cheering the Packers all game. My girlfriend asked me why I’m cheering Rodgers on since I was going against him. I had to explain to her the $500+ I’d win for winning the league again wouldn’t be worth seeing the Packers lose. I would gladly pay $500 every year to see my Packers in the Super Bowl. I think most fans would say the same for their teams.

I strongly agree with huejackson. Although Fantasy Football can make the a person watch more games, it is not the “Raider Way” to route against the Raiders just because you have a Fantasy Player on the opposing team.

It won’t be the first time one of our linebackers misses out on a big play. No news there.

So how’s that steal of a deal you made for Gallery working out? Has he played more than 2 games. How about Zach? Is he on the field much?

Thanks for Curry. Not much risk and a big upside.

  33. raiderlyfe510 says: Oct 14, 2011 5:47 PM

Nah..the Raider Way is not why we struggled the past years. We discovered that veterans and players from other teams weren’t strong enough to be Raiders.(except the Richard Seymours who were born to be Raiders)so we started molding them through the draft. Now that we have solid foundation of true Raiders we can start bringing in other team’s players again and teach them how to walk…THE RAIDER WAY.

  34. seahawk77 says: Oct 14, 2011 7:59 PM

Curry and all the Raiders have to be licking their chops , a home game agsainst the Browns an automatic win. Oh yeah, Kam Wimbley , not good enough to play in the vaunted Browns defense, what a joke!
