A.J. Hawk calls middle finger a “running joke”

A.J. Hawkfinger

Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk apologized for flipping his teammates the bird on Sunday.

Hawk said the gesture was a “running joke” with some of his teammates.

“I’m stupid. I don’t even realize sometimes when I’m out there that anyone’s out there; the TVs or anything,” Hawk said before promising not to do it again.

Hawk said he hopes to avoid a fine, but we’d expect him to get one.  He should make NFL history as the first player to be fined for an obscene gesture towards his own teammates.

I honestly don’t think it’s that big of a deal. It was a dumb move by him, and he should be fined for it, but I don’t think less of him, and people are making to big of a deal about it… Go pack!

  4. mikeb723 says: Oct 16, 2011 9:58 PM

B.j Raji gonna complain bout that too?

  5. greengob1in says: Oct 16, 2011 9:59 PM

Based on his explanation, he might have surpassed VYoung as the NFL’s dumbest. Should have just said “I have no class”

  6. scudbot says: Oct 16, 2011 10:01 PM

Obscene gesture or running joke, America will never rest until this is made right for all the fans who were traumatized.

Anyway, it’ll make another non-issue hot button for all the posters here who are bitter about the Pack.

  7. scudbot says: Oct 16, 2011 10:03 PM

Better not post that Rodgers straws-in-the-nose photobomb. That wouldn’t be “classy” either.

  8. nevin999 says: Oct 16, 2011 10:08 PM

I understand this kind of “Yeah, yeah, F you!” humour with your buddies (teammates) but I’m not sure why it wouldn’t occur to him that he was being nationally televised… At any rate, this isn’t a big deal at all, though I doubt he’ll avoid a fine.

  9. scudbot says: Oct 16, 2011 10:09 PM

This ranks right up there with Big Ben’s bathroom behavior and Mike Vick’s numerous felonies, doesn’t it?

By lifting one finger, AJ Hawk was simply showing the viewing audience what he believes the Ram’s Offensive Coordinator’s football IQ happens to be.

I HATE the dancing and stupid celebrations after a routine play. There is nothing more classless or lame. But this? This is awesome.

  14. brandonyer says: Oct 16, 2011 10:32 PM

I really hope we are able to get past this. If Michael Vick and Donte Stallworth deserve a second chance in this league…. I just hope that in a few years we will be able to forgive AJ….in a perfect world maybe.

How about instead of reacting irrationally to hand movements, we just act like adults and ignore it? Of course, if people stopped giving such “obscene” things so much attention, then there wouldn’t be any point in doing it in the first place…

if a packer does it, it’s not classless at all. it’s just a fun ol’ joke, good boy havin fun out there. sound familiar, packer fans?

No, Mrs. Lovejoy. Your kids let you think you were explaining it to them. Or your kids are incredibly isolated from other kids. I haven’t met a 5 year old that doesn’t have at least a passing idea of what flipping someone the bird is.

I find it funny how many people are just desperately searching for a reason to hate Packers players. For a group of people who claim to love competition and what it represents, a lot of folks seem awfully bitter about seeing a successful team.

  42. jnova80 says: Oct 17, 2011 12:09 AM

Why is it that everytime a player does something questionable people blame the whole organization for being unclassy? It’s annoying and I’m not even a Packers fan. But anyways, what was he thinking? Haha

  43. bostonbias says: Oct 17, 2011 12:15 AM

I used to love the Pack. But their irrational fans have turned most people including me against them. If any other teams did this, they are the first to point it out, but they think the Packers can never do any wrong.

  44. blitzkrueger says: Oct 17, 2011 12:28 AM

The parents would see their kids do that and the kids thought it was cool and started doing that you would think the parents saw that they would do something. Probably sue A.J Hawk or the nfl any of you guys think it was cool to see that not even caring stop looking at the positves and look at the negatives reading these comments makes me know you don’t care for safety you may think it was funny but when i was watching that game i knew something bad would happen and you will see it to keep laughing you think you like him more becuase of that when you see him suspended you won’t be laughing hopefully Goodell does something about it and the packers SUCK you packer backers

It blows my mind that you can even pretend like the Packers are classless. They’re undefeated yet we hardly talk about them. Watch ESPN and see how many times they talk about the Packers. They’re too concerned with Vick or Tebow or fighting coaches or frickin eightfive’s stupid tweets. Why? Because the Packers are good but that’s it – they don’t run around acting like they’re hot stuff or create controversy. This is ONE THING, and it’s not even a big deal. Get the hell over it and stop diggin’ for reasons to hate the Packers.

It may be a little too soon to give the Packers the “hyper exposure”after only 6 wins… let them win one more Superbowl before we start examining them like the 00′ Patriots or 90’s Cowboys.

Then we can really start calling them classless..

And for the non-packers fans: Don’t worry, if we can’t beat them at football we can still beat them at CLASSINESS! – Hollar Girlfriends!

  69. valleyman0505 says: Oct 17, 2011 10:39 AM

For those of you comparing this to the Randy Moss moon, remember…A.J. flipped off his OWN bench. Not the other team’s bench. Not the other team’s fans. His OWN bench. Obviously, it was done as a joke and not as any type of disrespect. It was the DISRESPECT shown by Moss’s act that infuriated everyone, not necessarily the “moon” itself. Who hasn’t mooned someone as a joke before? It all context people.

Oh, and if your 5 & 8 year old haven’t seen a middle finger before, you are about 3 years late for signing up your oldest for school. They are supposed to start at age 5, but apparently yours aren’t attending for some reason.
