Jets may end up getting nothing for Mason

The Jets have completed a trade that sends Mason to the Houston Texans for an undisclosed draft pick. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum says Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, that “things didn’t work out on the field with Derrick,” and that they took advantage of the opportunity when the Texans called to inquire about Mason. Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum insisted recently that receiver Derrick Mason would still be a member of the team if the Texans hadn’t called to inquire about a trade. But given that Mason was benched last Sunday due reportedly to complaints about the offense, the Texans knew that it made sense to make a call.

The Texans knew it also made sense to offer the Jets a half-full thermos of lukewarm soup for Mason.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Jets will get nothing from the Texans unless Mason catches 33 passes the rest of the way. That’s an average of three per game. If he gets 33 or more, the Jets get a seventh-rounder.

So, basically, the Jets dumped Mason.

In hindsight, it may have been a smart move. With more and more chatter coming from the locker room, Mason surely would have felt emboldened to chime in, if he were still there.
