Sean Payton has torn MCL, tibia fracture

Sean Payton AP

One of the biggest injuries from Week Six didn’t happen to a player.

Saints coach Sean Payton has a torn MCL and a tibia plateau fracture, essentially a broken knee, after tight end Jimmy Graham ran into him in the sideline during the first half of Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers. The Saints PR department confirmed the extent of the injury, which was first reported by Jay Glazer of FOX.

Payton remained on the bench in the first half after the injury with his leg elevated and ice on the injury. His headset was on and he kept on coaching before getting x-rays at halftime. He’s calling plays from upstairs in the second half as the Saints try to come back from a 20-10 halftime deficit.

He’s too young to be Joe Paterno.

Even from the press box there’s 20 teams that wish they had him.

The Giants aren’t one of them, with the way he had us looking like a JV squad with his play-calling. He just better be glad he has Brees.

    …. for now.

I couldn’t help but laugh a little bit at this. Just not something you see everyday.

I wonder how this pans out on the next injury report. “Oh, a knee? DAMN that hurts!”

Seriously though… was bad to see for a guy I’d want to coach my team.

Anyone see he was STILL coaching while on the cart? Gotta give it up for that guy.

Good deal. Karma making its way around for the cheap “cut the head off the snake” late hits on Favre in the nfc championship game in 09.

Yikes, he’s going to need some pain meds for that.

im wondering how this affects the saints going forward, does he need surgery, will his game planning suffer now that he has to find time to rehab?

Do coaches have to go on the injury report? I’m guessing Vegas will want to know.

well…at least coaches aren’t intentionally tripping and hurting other players

    right Jets?

  13. ooops11 says: Oct 16, 2011 6:48 PM

Not much of a Saints fan but there are a few coaches I’d rather see this happen to than Payton.

  14. boneyardbuc says: Oct 16, 2011 6:54 PM

Well at least the refs have made up for him with phantom pass interference calls 10 minutes after the play…

Saints radio is reporting that Payton never made it to the booth, he couldn’t make it so he’s in the locker room.

  18. 2ndaryinsanity says: Oct 16, 2011 7:01 PM

Talk about being tough!! Going forward, Saints players better be unconscious or have a bone sticking out before they miss a game!

Jeez, people! It was a friggin’ joke, that was also a compliment to Peyton’s dedication and toughness! I’ve torn a knee ligament, broken & dislocated my kneecap. I’m here to tell you it hurts BAD. The fact that he spent the remainder of the 1st half coaching from the bench, and the 2nd half at the stadium is impressive. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Yea, just like that phantom unnessary roughness call on the Harper hit on Williams that lead to a score. He hit the runner with his shoulder. Yep, that’s a penalty these days.
