If if if. If Detroit was a better tam they would have won. Have fun with Turner this weekend. SF just gave the rest of the league the blueprint on how to contain megatron and Suh. They really aren't that scary as it turns out if you have the right scheme and personel as SF most assuredly does. I do hope for a rematch in the post season. Most likely it will be in SF. You will lose to GB twice and I bet you lose to ATL this weekend. I bet Detroit ends up as an 11-5 wild card and then gets drop kicked in SF. SF vs. GB for NFC Championship game.

Take the loss and deal with it. Bad calls all over the place. Our DB's were getting pushed off on some of Calvin's catches, and upon pointing it out - the ref's laughing his ass off. How many times was ur O-Line getting away with holding our d-line? We had five sacks and ten QB hits but could've had a lot more.

As for the return, the announcers even called it out @ the 36. Regardless - the "Silver Crush" was chirping all day on the sidelines emploring Jim to "'Learn the mf rules"... he should learn to pay mf attention.

To the fools who says the 9ers would've faced a 4th and long because of that spot on the final drive: Changing the spot, changes the sequence of plays - meaning it's highly doubtful if the niners had to face a 4th and 11, and even more doubtful that if they DID, they wouldn't have Walker run a slant to get 6 yards and hope for the best..

Referee's aside - u were outplayed when it mattered, had just under two minutes with 3 timeouts left to go for a game tying fieldgoal. End of story, take the loss and man up.

One last thing for the crybaby Lions fans and the 5-yards:

<i>When Ginn fielded the ball at the San Francisco 26-yard line, there wasn't a punt coverage player within 10 yards. After making a couple cuts up field, long-snapper Don Mulbach and linebacker DeAndre Levy closed the running lane at the 35-yard line, but the two collided going in for the tackle, allowing Ginn to squirt free and change directions. </i>

Your coverage was horrible and you missed the most important special-teams tackle of the game. Don't want to hear about 5-yards when you blew it and gave up 30 of them yourselves.

By-the-way, Schwartz is a punk. This was what happened after Harbaugh a challenge flag on the Burleson TD.

<i>TV replays showed Detroit coach Jim Schwartz yelling across the field at Harbaugh. He appeared to say, "Know the rules, Harbaugh" -- with, <b>perhaps, a little colorful language thrown in there, as well.</b></i>

If you read his lips. There's definately some punk in what Schwartz said. Which is typical of Schwarts. He was like that with the Titans too. Big trash talker.

<i>scratchnpost1234 says:Oct 18, 2011 10:58 AM

Can’t argue with the math Whiners. 4th and 9 with a 6 yard pass is ball over on downs and no TD for the Niners. The TD call was correct, the ball did break the plane but it should have been the 3 yardline not the goal line. Not Whining …just sayin , can’t argue with FACTS</i>

The problem with your juvenile whining rant is that the situation, from the first play would have almost certainly been different because the STARTING CONDITIONS WERE NOT THE SAME. THEREFORE, the entire sequence of plays you rely on so you can 'justify' your crybaby ways would have almost certainly been different.

Once you change one variable, everything past that point is speculation.

For example, maybe the 49ers at 4th and 9 don't run a slant? Maybe they hit the WR crossing on the back of the endzone. A slant is a good play for 6 yards. Not for 10. And both Smith and Harbaugh know this...

Or, maybe since they're 40-yards out instead of 35 they're more aggressive. Maybe on the first play they run a pass-play to Vernon Davis pick up 20-yards instead. Then they run the jumbo line package and just run it in...

Who knows?

But to pretend ONLY THAT PLAY mattered in a 8-play drive is stupid and shallow.

The only part of a runner that matters is his Knee’s/Legs. He could have run with his facemask across the turf and he still wouldn’t have been ruled down.</i>

Actually, there are only two parts of the players body that can touch ground after defensive contact: Feet and hands. All else mean the player is 'down by contact.'

Now, if it's not by defensive contact, then it doesn't matter.

Exactly, ninerfan42. Only reason no 9er fan feels the need to cry about those things is cause we won the game. There were more calls in favor of the Home team than the Visiting team. It's only due to two very excellent Runs from Frank that our team Won. Refs really couldn't throw a flag on Holding since it was a Run play (same one both times) and Gore faked blocks only to roll over Detroit's Defense. That was just awesome. There really is no way to Defense that since he very well could be blocking. Imagine what happens if their Defense tackles him on a Passing play. :D

But if the Lions fans wish to boo hoo about bad calls they can call up the first 4 games of our season. #15 being denied a clear Touchdown because the Zebra in the back of the End Zone left his coke bottle prescriptions on the bench when he went to get a drink of water. That being just one of 8 really bad calls. And that phantom NZInfraction on a 3rd and 4(or something like that) that extended the series one play too long for the Cowboys who promptly scored on our Defense after Brock fell to the turf. That call isn't made the 9ers are 6-0 not 5-1. I don't expect our team would have gone undefeated but I'd be willing to bet that we've been the most punked team by the Zebras for a very long time. Going back YEARS.

Oh and on that return? There was no block in the back. I saw plenty of shots taken in the sides but there weren't any names being tattooed. That's straight up false.

Well what about the the missed call when Vanden Bosch was clearly off sides when he stripped the ball from Alex Smith or when our TE Walker was simply going in motion and the Lions jumped off sides and yet we were called for a false start and another time when a Lion's DE jumped and yet they call a false start on Joe Staley. You may not think these 5 yard penalties really matter but it is a HUGE difference when you are on the road and you go from 1st and 10 to 1st and 15. There were PLENTY of missed calls/bad calls for both teams.

Schwartz was totally at fault for the altercation after the game. Harbaugh was celebrating with his players on the field,as he always does after a win, when all of a sudden he turned around and was face to face with JS. Harbaugh shook his hand and patted him on the back (a little too hard for the soft Schwartz) and then went on his way towards the locker room to celebrate some more. Schwartz then went after Harbaugh and bumped him from behind a couple of times like a coward before Harbaugh even realized it was that nutcase Schwartz who was bumping into him. Harbaugh then said ..get out of my face and then JS was the one who started swearing and acting the fool and running around losing his mind. Harbaugh and every sane person was amazed that a nutjob like Schwartz was let out of the mental hospital and is even allowed to be around normal people. How humiliating for the Lions organization that the face of their franchise is a complete lunatic. I am sure that if JH knew JS was unstable that he would have gently shook his hand and been on his way . But then we would have all been deprived of one of the funniest scenes in NFL history when Scwartz ran around like a fool ,with Jh and the Niners players looking on in wonder, scratching their heads and laughing AT Schwartz....LOL !!!

scratch -

That's my point, you don't know what would have transpired differently. Just like assuming Harbaugh would have called for a 6 yard pass pattern if he needed nine yards for a first down, Detroit punting from their own 25 still could have given the 49ers the ball in decent enough position to move into fieldgoal range in the last minute plus that was left.

I understand your agravation, but you guys are having a great year and you weren't going undefeated anyways. There's a lot of football yet to be played and that doesn't even take into account the bright future the Lions seem to have waiting for them.

Michael David Smith says:

@sonoco

If it was intentional grounding Carey should have called intentional grounding. What Carey called was that Stafford’s forward progress had stopped in the end zone, and that was clearly not correct — he was lunging forward as he threw the ball.

----------------------------------------

The point he's making MDS is you can't complain about a bad call and imply it should have been ruled differently, and ignore the other bad call on the same play that if called correctly would have the same result. The bottom line is the play correctly resulted in a safety and the game was not altered.

I've seen the horse-collar tackle called so many times when it's been the jersey that was grabbed, I assumed the rule was written to include it.

I hate to see bad calls go against a team and affect games; but I don't have any sympathy when it's within their power to rectify them - throw the challenge flag

Course the way the Niners and gore were gashing the Lions on runs maybe he takes in from 80 yards out.
@ klunge & scratchnpost

You both assume the 49ers would have gone for the first down (first & 10 from the 12) and failed had they started at the 40 and used the same sequence of plays. But perhaps they would have kicked the fieldgoal on what would have been a fourth & nine from the 11. Actually it’s likely. The outcome could have very well remained the same and only the score being different (21-19).

There are NO FACTS concerning what someone would have done if things were different.

Last time I checked a FG is only 3 points and the score would have been 19-18 and they would have had to kickoff to Detroit. The last 3 points came from Detroit going for it in their territory and SF getting the ball and getting another 3 .Those are the FACTS JACK, thank Carey's crew for the asterisk win there.

There was a penalty at the end of that punt. It was an illegal man down field, the yardage was added to the end of the run. As for Hunter being down and getting an extra 6 yards, Schwartz “should know the rule” and challenge it next time!!!!!!

there was no penalty on the punt return. Check the play by play on CBSsportsline gamecast. They called Gin down at the 35 and he was run out of bounds at the 40

Safety was Questionable?

NFL Ruling is that if a Safety is imminent and the QB doesn't get the ball out to the Line of Scrimmage, it's a Safety. There was nobody near that spot and it was 1 or 2 yards shy of the Line of Scrimmage. Ergo, it's a Safety. That was a good call.

How about the dead ball call of Neutral Zone infraction? That is NEVER whistled dead as it is a free play for the Offense and the play goes at snap if the Defender is still in the Neutral Zone, laundry hits the field, QB tries to make something happen and in the event that he fails Offense gets the benefit of the call.

I completely agree that the Refs sucked but they called more of the game in benefit to the Lions than the 9ers. 5 yards backward against the 9ers would not have changed anything. How about all the holding going on? How about after blowing dead our NZInfraction the Refs missing theirs? Calling False Start on our Line when in point of fact their guys moved across the ball causing our guy to flinch.

Sorry Lions got dinged but this is one rare instance where we got one over on the opponent. Go back to the beginning of the season and look how many times our guys got pooched by incompetent officiating. My heart bleeds for the opponent. Not.

The chop block was a good call.
The safety was ruled in the grasp, whatever that means. As a Niners fan I don't think it was a safety, but I will take it.
Schwartz may do all of his fist pumping, like he's on Jersey Shire, from the other sideline, but other coaches see that garbage. He's gone to press conferences and called other teams soft, but now that it came at him a little bit, he gets his shorts all in a bunch? Come on, it was a good game. The players played hard, they all made mistakes, but at the end it was hard fought and it came down to the wire. Can you ask for anything more?

As a life-long Lions fan, I would say they looked pretty lifeless in that game. They were one play away from winning a game in which they didn't show up for. They lost, I'm ready to move on.

I'll say one thing about the post-game dramatics. It was the fault of both coaches. You have Harbaugh jumping around pulling up his shirt like a clown and when Schwartz went to shake his hand, he felt slighted by what happened and chased him down. It was wrong but he goes into every game with a lot of emotion. I would rather have a coach that show's that level of emotion during a game than a coach like Lovie Smith or Leslie Frazier whom you have to check their pulse to make sure they're still alive.

The 49ers have been on the tail end of this for years. Feels good to for once be the beneficiary of bad calls.

But in the end a loss is a loss and complaining now isn't going to change it to a win because you don't know what would have happened had that call went differently. Maybe Harbaugh calls a different set of plays and they still score the TD? Or there is always the chance that the 4th and 9 play leads to a first and goal because of the extra yards and now the 49ers are closer to the end zone with 4 plays to make the TD and giving the Lions even less time to get it done? There are more factors playing than just the plays they did during that drive.
