Raiders won’t reveal starter for Sunday

C. Palmer Raiders AP

Logic would dictate that Kyle Boller starts Sunday against the Chiefs for Oakland, not Carson Palmer.

Boller has been in the offense since last year, and the Raiders could start the Palmer era after Oakland’s Week Eight bye.  Then again, logic said Palmer would still be a Cincinnati Bengal after the trading deadline.

“You think I’m going to tell you that right now?” coach Hue Jackson when asked about his starter against the Chiefs.  “You know me a little bit better than that. You do try, all you guys try. Nice try.

“I’m not going to let that out of the bag just yet. But you gotta be ready for anything from me, I think you know that.”

It’s a huge game for the Chiefs.  They can get right back in the AFC West race with a win in Oakland despite their unsightly start to the season.

People question giving up a first rounder and a conditional pick for Palmer but us Raiders have waited too long to have a winning season (2002). The time is now. We have ben patient.

I think they could get Carson Palmer up to speed on the playbook quickly. There’s only one passing play: line the fastest guys up wide and heave it to them.

It’s obvious that you go with the guy who has the best golf handicap right now. See you on Sunday Mr. Palmer. No quitting this time!

Hue Jackson is in over his head. The Raiders should hire a GM right away like Mike Lombardy. Someone needs to rip the check book out of Hue’s hand.

Hue said the samething about curry & he started, Might as well release boller, all the ppl yelling Raiders did the worst trade ever, team can pick him up!!!

Yea, like trading one first round pick, potentially two for Carson Palmer… If he’s worth two, wats the value on Peyton Manning, Brady, and Rodgers?? 3,4,5 first rounders? But for the Raiders sake I hope this pans out…

  14. mwcarolina says: Oct 18, 2011 10:34 PM

Just start Palmer! by the way, Palmer’s number is 3, it’s the same number he had in college.

  15. bittersportspills says: Oct 18, 2011 10:34 PM

Palmer doesn’t start until after the bye. There’s way too much risk to make the change now.

If Palmer starts and stinks the place up against the Chiefers, there’d be outrage in Oakland. They really need to win the next two games to have a shot at the playoffs.

  16. 52crabcakes says: Oct 18, 2011 10:35 PM

Palmer has a qb rating of 81.9 the last 3 years. I know that’s good for a Raider, but sucks for every other team, so it doesn’t matter. Chiefs will pummel whoever is back there. both stink.

edmazeing – I’m gonna guess #3 since he wore that number in college.

Even when Palmer does start, I’m not sure that he will be that great anyway. In Cincy, he was alright but he also had Ochocinco and Housh to throw to, which at that time were very legit options as both were perennial Pro Bowl nominees. Now in Oakland, he’s got who.. Louis Murphy, Heyward-Bey, Schilens and Jacoby Ford? I don’t really see him flourishing with that corps of receivers. If Oakland could manage to sign or deal for a legit WR in the offseason, then I think Palmer could be pretty good. But with his options now, it may be hard for them as none of them are even close to being Pro Bowl WR’s. But time will tell…

As a Chiefs fan I’m rooting for Boller or a badly out of shape Palmer. My sincere hope is that Palmer is all swollen up with a bad case of “fork poisoning” and needs a couple weeks to recover.

  36. jacksaysfu says: Oct 18, 2011 11:09 PM

Congrats Raiders fans , You just made the Cards look like geniuses in their trade for Kolb . Cincy has officially won the trade of the year award. I think Palmer will be good, but he’s a 32 year old QB who hasn’t been impressive in years. I’m an Eagles fan who wished we could have mugged the Raiders, but for Cincy to get a 1st and either another 1 or 2 is just straight impressive!

  37. damnyoulinelliot says: Oct 18, 2011 11:10 PM

Raiders could beat the Chiefs with Shane Lectler as QB…This will be a easy game for the Raiders, I think Boller,Palmer and Pryor will all play in some capacity.
This game will be ugly, Last game against the Browns was a complete domination regardless what the score said but this game you will be able to judge by the score as well..
    Raiders 41
    Cheifs 10

  40. ravensfan4life52 says: Oct 18, 2011 11:18 PM

C’mon son! Kyle Boller? No, not unless Brian Billick has been hired as the Raider’s head coach and no one told me about it. Logic would dictate A.) It’s the Chiefs. Warren Moon could start for them on Sunday and the Raiders would still win. and B.) They just traded a 1st and a 2nd, possibly 2 1st round picks, for this guy. So do you really have to ask?

  41. oaktown49er says: Oct 18, 2011 11:20 PM

  46. raiderapologist says: Oct 18, 2011 11:36 PM

It’s easy enough to get caught up in draft picks and Palmer’s (in)ability to get it done, but it’s not like he has to put the team on his back. Oakland’s O-line is surprisingly stout, they have a solid ground game, and the defense is starting to tighten up. Houston and Cleveland couldn’t run on them, and the pass rush put good licks on Schaub and McCoy. The only thing Oakland has to do this Sunday is beat KC at home to shut some mouths, and that isn’t a stretch.

DHB has been playing like a 1st rd pick this year. Jacoby Ford is great and Kevin Boss, Derek Hagan and Chaz Shilens all are good targets with great hands. Murphy is hurt I dont know if he is back but he could play for any team in the league. You need to rethink that statement or perhaps you just havent watched any Raider games so you just dont know what you are talking about.

  51. ronlm says: Oct 19, 2011 12:14 AM

The Raiders young WR’s are really starting to come around. They are better than their reputation suggests.

But… that’s not the Raiders game anyway. They are the leagues top running team… Carson will have plenty to work with having teams stack the box with eight trying to contain Darren McFadden.

Plus, the young OL was protecting Jason Campbell better than any Cincy OL protected Palmer.

This is a good gig for Palmer. Dominate running game, stout OL, young and talented WR corp. Now we just get to see if he’s lost anything, or if those last couple of years in Cincinatti was more due to just a horrible situation for him.

  52. war27 says: Oct 19, 2011 12:15 AM

Boller starts, there will be packages ready in case Palmer needs to go in. Even Rich Gannon feels this way.

  61. christopher525 says: Oct 19, 2011 12:43 AM

For the number, I was figuring 3, as everyone has said, being his college number. As for my opinion on the trade, I do think they overpaid in picks for him, but at the same time they got the guy they wanted and if it results in a deep playoff run (or, god forbid, a Super Bowl win), those picks are well worth having been traded. I like Palmer, and actually had been hoping that Carolina would have found a way to pick him up as a mentor this offseason for Cam, luckily he is doing much better than expected already.

  62. jakethegrift says: Oct 19, 2011 12:44 AM

As much as we want Carson Palmer to start playing now, he will not even suit up on Sunday. Boller will start. Pryor will be the back up. Carson will watch. They go into the bye week, and it gives Palmer enough time to study the play book, practice, and get a feel for the rhythm of the offense.

I would be surprised if he even suits up. As much as I am awaiting to see him play, he will not.

Go Raider Nation, and FIGHT ON!

  63. 808raiderinparadise says: Oct 19, 2011 12:45 AM

If you don’t know how crazy talented OAK’s WR’s are …. you can blame Jason Campbell. They are all smiling wide right now. So will be Carson.

  64. mydailyff.com says: Oct 19, 2011 12:50 AM

Whether it’s this week or next week, Palmer will struggle when he gets in there. He doesn’t know the playbook, he doesn’t know his receivers, he doesn’t know the offensive nuances, he doesn’t have audibles, he doesn’t have his timing since he hasn’t been playing, he doesn’t have timing with his receivers, etc. etc. etc. People who are talking about this deal as being about “winning now” are mistaken. This deal is for next year more than this year, because Carson won’t be comfortable in this system and with his teammates until week 12 or beyond. If they start him this week the Chiefs will be happy campers…and they’ll be blitzing every down…
