Redskins will roll with John Beck

Philadelphia Eagles v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Well, receiver Santana Moss apparently has little pull with his coaching staff.

Moss thinks quarterback Rex Grossman should continue to be the starter.  Coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan disagree.  Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shanahan has informed the Redskins that the team is going with John Beck.

Schefter says that a player texted the information after the meeting with Shanahan.

So much for the allegation that Schefter unreasonably protects sources.  If the Shanahans didn’t want the information to be disclosed publicly, the Shanahans won’t be happy that someone on the team has loose lips.  Or thumbs.

Grossman was benched Sunday after throwing four interceptions.  Beck, who wore a mechanic-style shirt with his name on it after the game, won’t need a name tag if he can get it done for the 3-2 Redskins.

The pummeling by the eagles has started the collapse we all knew was coming. Now the QB position is in disarray again and with the schedule coming up and injuries this team might not win 1 more game the rest of the way. Pretty obvious they will finish last again…HAIL…LMAO.

  2. skinsfanwill says: Oct 19, 2011 9:36 AM

Funny how the whole world knows Beck and Grossman are bums but the Shanny’s are out to prove the world wrong. That’s the only excuse I can come up with for not addressing the QB position in the offseason or by the trade deadline.

  3. burgundyandgold says: Oct 19, 2011 9:38 AM

It will be OK. It was always supposed to be a rebuilding year. Things are getting better and Shanny and Allen have a plan (I hope that includes a QB next year). The McNabb nonsense set us back a year.

The opinion of trolls like boysroll who hang in their mom’s basements and stare at their Michael Irvin posters hanging above the washing machine mean nothing to me.

  4. xstaticonradio says: Oct 19, 2011 9:39 AM

    John Beck?

I remember him from when he played for the Fins in 2007 against the Bills, and fumbled like 4 snaps and then got yanked for Cleo Lemon.

    Good times.

  5. sirmixalotalotalot says: Oct 19, 2011 9:39 AM

@boysroll Pummeling? Are you serious? The Eagles nearly lost that game despite the 4 INT’s from Grossman.

Get a clue before you post

Grossman averaged two turnovers a game in his eight starts.

Time to see what the Beckmeister has to offer.

Boysfold will stop posting after the aj feely led rams beat the over confident cowgirls ass. He only shows up when his mom allows computer access anyway.

  10. panther17 says: Oct 19, 2011 9:52 AM

If he can take a snap, hand the ball off, and not trip the RB as he goes by, he has a chance to come out with a win this weekend.

  11. bigjdve says: Oct 19, 2011 9:52 AM

While it is frustrating that QB wasn’t addressed in the offseason, multiple other positions were. We have a O line that is much better. We have a defensive line and linebacking corps that is much better. We have a better selection of running backs, we have upgraded our safety position as well.

Considering that we needed upgrades everywhere, I think that getting some of those other positions were more important at the time. I mean I don’t care if you have the best QB in the league, if you don’t have a line to protect him, he won’t last long.

Next year is supposed to have a better crop of QBs. So we will draft one in there somewhere. We have some extra picks.

Trade deadline, really? I mean I just saw what Oakland paid for Palmer, there are maybe 1 or 2 QBs in the league worth that and they weren’t available for trade. So not trading was smart.

I am glad they went with Beck, while I know that he isn’t the long term answer, he is more mobile which with OL injuries becomes more important, and if he averages less than 2 turnovers a game, we are ahead.

Something that people forget is that ole Sexy Rexy is averaging 3 picks a game over the last 3 games.

  12. sadskinsfan89 says: Oct 19, 2011 9:53 AM

This needed to be done. We know what rex is all about. He has gotten progressivly worse since the giants game. He is the same rex that has been in the league for 9years. Beck completed 8 passes in the time he was in the eagles game where rex completed 9 all game. That should tell u something. Rex single handedly lost that game. The defense played awesome the second half. Let’s see what beck can do. Can’t be worse than what rex did this past Sunday.

  14. brownwood26 says: Oct 19, 2011 9:54 AM

boysroll is a typical Cowdungs fan…talkin’ loud but not sayin’ nuthin. How ’bout getting a QB that doesn’t crap the bed in the 4th quarter before popping off about other people’s QBs, huh?

On a more pertinent topic, Beck is the right call. Shoulda started him from Day 1, IMO.

  15. sharkskins says: Oct 19, 2011 9:56 AM

@boysroll — was it the blown lead against the 9ers that caused the Cowboys collapse? Or was it the blown lead and horrible defense in the 4th quarter against the Pats? Maybe it was your owner calling out your coach, or the fact that you have no running backs on your roster that would start for any NFL franchise. Hang your hat on your 2 point win against the Redskins, when you were on here earlier in the year yelling “Cowboys to the Superbowl”, while all Skins fans know the team is in rebuilding mode.

Nobody expects the Redskins to compete this year, but if you do not believe the franchise is getting younger, and moving in the right direction, you know nothing about the game of Football.

  16. skinsfanwill says: Oct 19, 2011 9:56 AM

    —————————————————

That Mcnabb ordeal set us back 3 years. The entire controversy was because the Shanny’s thought Grossman was a better fit than McNabb. If they had seen he was a bum last year, we could be looking toward the future with a Rookie QB right now. Not next year.

  17. hailskins4life says: Oct 19, 2011 9:57 AM

This move became a must after the injuries to the o-line. As a skins fan, you have to be honest about what you have with both of them. Average on a good day, mediocre on most days. Beck’s mobility and scrambling ability give him the edge with big Trent out for a few weeks. Take care of the football and there is a chance at a good season (9-7 is good).

“Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy are licking their chops.”

    Who??

Like the decision to go with Beck. He looked decent in the preseason, and you can’t win with the multiple turnovers Grossman was producing each week. Don’t like the ‘Skins player tweeting the news to Schefter before the official announcement. It could be indicative of a rear-guard action against Shanny in the ‘Skins’ locker room.

  34. boysroll says: Oct 19, 2011 10:21 AM

Guys…all I am saying is this team is no better than last year. You barely beat a cards and rams team that are the worst in the league. If you had the boys schedule the 1st 5 games you would be 0-5. That part of the schedule is coming as we all know the collapse is coming.

wake up and be realistic…we have played the toughest schedule in the league thus far and have 7 winnable games coming up including your sorry a.. team. time to go on a roll and watch your org sink to the bottom as usual. Nothing has changed with this joke of an org and tired of all the 4skin faithful talking all this crap about going to the SB and playoffs through the 1st 4. I told the dopes that it is not where you are in game 4 but game 16 but the fan base will never get. Try getting out of last place before you talk SB and playoffs…lordy….

    LMAO……

  35. sharkskins says: Oct 19, 2011 10:22 AM

Oh wait, maybe it was the blown lead and multiple picks against the Jets that caused your unraveling…Jesus I see a constant here: Romo is a nightmare.

  36. blackqbwhiterb says: Oct 19, 2011 10:25 AM

Slowly, the Redskins are moving in the right direction after about 15 years….I was livid that we passed on a QB in the draft, but Kerrigan has turned out to be more than capable. Andy Dalton is looking good in Cincy, though. But I must admit, I know zilch about who is available in next April’s draft. This team needs to build a big time offensive line and get a QB, then we’ll be ok.
Oh, and a true shut down corner, like the one we let go to San Francisco that is once again playing lights out, while our guy gets burned every week playing off trying to read the QB’s eyes……cost us one game and maybe 2 already…..Rogers never would have been 5-7 yards away from Dez Bryant or Maclin last week twice

  37. polegojim says: Oct 19, 2011 10:32 AM

Every team fields the best they can at any given time. Redskins did the same…that’s what’s so painful.

Rex is exactly who we thought he was. Eventually when he struggles, the ‘slinging with hope as a strategy’ begins.

NFL is a better place when the Redskins are good, but the QB that will get them there is NOT on their current roster.

Shanny, you tried to defy the odds in Denver with three post Elway QBs and it didn’t work. Learn from your past mistakes and go after a conventional QB or draft pick. Stop lengthening Washingtons rebuilding year….years…

  38. gmen1987 says: Oct 19, 2011 10:33 AM

Sonny Jurgensen could come out of the broadcast booth and play better QB than the two clowns the Deadskins have been touting as their starter quality QBs since training camp.

  39. londonfletcher says: Oct 19, 2011 11:28 AM

“Oh, and a true shut down corner, like the one we let go to San Francisco that is once again playing lights out,”

Yeah, Rogers playing like a man on a mission out in San Fran now. I wish we had kept him instead of MeAngelo. I’d rather at least have a guy break-up a play and not intercept a ball than a guy who gets burned every time and crys about it.

  40. skinsfaninnebraska says: Oct 19, 2011 11:40 AM

It was well worth seeing if Rex could flourish in the Shanahan’s system. He had a pretty good camp and preseason. Meanwhile, they used their high picks wisely in the last draft to get some good players who will help the team for many years to come. Now that we know he’s still the same ol’ Rex, that’s fine. He had his shot, and now he’s done.

Beck is an unknown quantity at this point. Lots of physical talent, good character, good work ethic, but no experience. Some guys are gamers who don’t show their best until it’s live and in color on Sunday. We’ll see whether or not Beck is one of those guys.

I know everyone says the NFL is a “win-now” league, but frankly it takes time to undo a decade or more of disastrous mis-management.

  41. bigjdve says: Oct 19, 2011 11:40 AM

Rogers was too worried about the contract he thought he was worth and didn’t have.

He didn’t get it and found out that he would actually have to play for one. So he is playing well right now, let’s see how he does next year before talking about how great he is.

Shutdown corner – yeah right, you have to cover AND be able to intercept the ball to be a shutdown corner.

Neither Crogers or Dhall fit into that category, they each can do 1/2 well.

  42. deweyoxburger says: Oct 19, 2011 11:42 AM

Beck just put in his notice at the gas station he was working at on the side. He did put in a good word for Rex, so he’s got that going for him…which is nice.
A week of first team reps does a body good. HTTR!

“If he can take a snap, hand the ball off, and not trip the RB as he goes by, he has a chance to come out with a win this weekend.”

Only if he’s somehow learned to not drop the ball in the last 3.5 years. He was so scary then that last Sunday was the first time anybody’s let him onto a football field during a game that counts.

  44. dieselfan44 says: Oct 19, 2011 12:25 PM

Boysroll is obsessed with us… posts on ALL Redskins updates, which means a part of him is worried our outlook is better than the Cowboys.

I don’t bother to even read Cowboy/Romo updates cause who even takes them seriously? They’re irrelevant. Your overhyped, overexposed, overrated team has won just as many playoff games in the last 16 years as our “joke” of a franchise. Dallas will bumble their way to 9-7 every year from now until eternity and go out with a laughable week 17 or wild card loss. And once again, our team which was supposed to be awful, has a better record than your “Super Bowl or bust” team this year.. just like last years “Super Bowl or bust” team which started 1-6.

Skins however have a real coach, real football GM, and are shaking off the pieces of a decade of mismanagement. Headed in the right direction.

Good luck with your Romo bandwagon which will spin in the mud for 5 more years until all your talent has left the team……

Dude you don’t have a 16-0 team, so settle with you have & play football. Even the Redskins players say keep Rex. Talking bout team chemistry. Shannhan needs to go back to school for that.

Well, Mike isn’t the one calling the plays. Kyle is, and Mike sure as hell isn’t the one on the field throwing interceptions. Rex is. So explain how that’s Mikes fault. Grossman was benched in Chicago after 10 interceptions in 3 games, and Mike wasn’t his coach then. So was it That Mikes fault?

And don’t think that I’m one of those “Angry Redskins Fans”, because I’m not. I support my team as much as I can, but Rex has done nothing but decline so far this season, and it makes it hard for me to support him under center any more. And Shanahan and Allen are a hell of a lot better than Cerrato and Snyder. Those two couldn’t get 2 games into the playoffs with a 15-1 record…

If you honestly think that this team hasn’t greatly improved since Allen and Shanahan took over, then you must have LOVED it when Snyder signed Prime….
