Polamalu fined $10,000 for using cell phone during game

Getty Images

On Sunday, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was spotted using a cell phone on the sidelines after leaving the game against the Jaguars with concussion-like symptoms.  He has now gotten the bill.

Per multiple reports, the NFL has fined Polamalu $10,000.

On Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin said he didn’t believe Polamalu would be fined, since Polamalu was calling his wife to tell her that he was fine.

“Fine” is the key word.

During NFL games there are PR people on the sidelines to take care of this stuff. & don’t hide behind your wife Troy!!

  7. geniusesq says: Oct 21, 2011 4:18 PM

Okay. $10,000 for using a cell phone after permanently leaving the game with a head injury. (Hey Mom I’m okay)

No fine for Jim Schwartz-enegger chasing Jim Harbaugh like a miniature Doberman Pinscher??

  8. rcali says: Oct 21, 2011 4:19 PM

To be fair, when you have a concussion you kinda forget things…like the rules in this instance. But of course he didn’t have a concussion…right?

  9. edmazeing1 says: Oct 21, 2011 4:22 PM

he should have said he was useing a verizon phone there sponsored by NFL!!!

  10. carnboys says: Oct 21, 2011 4:22 PM

I hope Troy is alright for the baltimore game. because I don’t want no excuses when baltimore kicks there butts again. I hope he is fine.

But we want you to play more games and if you get your bell rung you can’t let your wife know if you’re okay.

Video of Vince young punching someone out in a bar…that’s okay

    Down with GODell…the hypocrite!

The NFL is getting silly with this.

  15. sojumaster says: Oct 21, 2011 4:28 PM

It was reported several times that the trainer handed his own phone over to Troy. It was not even like Troy had his own phone on the sideline. No matter players get huge saleries now, they have to pay fines for every little tiny mis-step now.

You didn’t get any excuses when baltimore beat them in week 1. Dunno why you like to invent drama where there is no drama.

this is all made up. how does somebody with that much hair padding the inside of his helmet get a concussion?

  18. sojumaster says: Oct 21, 2011 4:31 PM

A.J. Hawk makes an obscene gesture on national TV during the middle of a football game — $10,000 ….

Telling your wife on the phone that you are OK after suffering a possible concussion – $10,000 ….

Something is not right in goodell-ville.

  19. b1gwin says: Oct 21, 2011 4:31 PM

He should spend another $2000 flyinf up to NY to stick the $10000 straight up Goodels ass!

  20. cmiddel says: Oct 21, 2011 4:32 PM

the problem was, he had a concussion and should not have been on the sidelines at all. he was supposed to go to the clubhouse immediately after being diagnosed where he could have called anyone he wanted! but rules aren’t for the steelers anyway!

He wasn’t diagnosed with a concussion. You try way too hard for such an awful punchline.

These fines have become a cliche. This is way over the top.

  25. makosalad says: Oct 21, 2011 4:41 PM

Yea, he got fined. We knew this was coming. I’ll gladly take any story about the Steelers. But i would’ve thought Ben’s input on ‘consistancy’ in the NFL protecting the quarterbacks would’ve been better than this. Or did Vick reap that field?

  26. londonfletcher says: Oct 21, 2011 4:45 PM

If he had taken his phone out and threw it at the opposing head coach he wouldn’t have been fined..just sayin. Way to prioritize, NFL.

  27. mvp43 says: Oct 21, 2011 4:48 PM

Thank god he didn’t flip off his team and wear yellow shoes while calling his wife……….

  28. opbilly says: Oct 21, 2011 4:50 PM

    @ steeler’s willnot

you made my point for me. he supposedly had the old neck injury!!! but not one trained or anyone else bothered to try to massage his neck or move his arms back and forth to see if he had range of motion. just saying!!!

How long till the NFL starts giving fines for breathing?

  30. wte1 says: Oct 21, 2011 4:53 PM

  31. bordner says: Oct 21, 2011 4:54 PM

  32. doctorbarr says: Oct 21, 2011 4:55 PM

  34. Sam Von Schamm says: Oct 21, 2011 5:05 PM

  35. theripster30 says: Oct 21, 2011 5:05 PM

let’s prepare for another round of childish haters out with their pitch forks demanding a pound of flesh for USING A CELL PHONE! get a life. FYI, Troy’s not the first to be fined for using a cell phone. how bout you find someone who’s claiming we’re being unfairly targeted before you go making stupid comments.

please someone explain to me why anyone is so invested in this issue? it’s just another ridiculous fine from Goodell and once again it’s dominating football discussion. this is sickening for a football fan.

  38. melikefootball says: Oct 21, 2011 5:09 PM

Just shows you what God-del and his cronies are made of. A player gets a hit in head and taken out of game, wife is concerned….yea he cares about the players safety alright. Fine for this and none for two coaches showing what sportsman they are.

  39. vincentbojackson says: Oct 21, 2011 5:11 PM

$10,000 to Troy is like 10 bucks to the rest of us. I’d risk a $10 fine to let my family know I was ok.

That being said, the NFL is getting out of hand with this crap. At some point common sense has to prevail. This infraction hurt nobody.

  40. skinsrock says: Oct 21, 2011 5:16 PM

He knew the rules & decided he didn’t care…. It’s OK to do that, but it’s OK to pay $10,000 too.

  41. gopakgo says: Oct 21, 2011 5:42 PM

Now this is just plain silly. The guys calling his wife who is a home worried about her husband. If I was just injured and my wife saw it happen on the news, I think she would want to hear from me too!

  42. okiesteeler says: Oct 21, 2011 5:45 PM

I am okay with Troy getting fined, but the amount is ridiculous. Pettigrew got fined less for an illegal chop block, $7500. Antonio Smith got fined $7500 for ripping the helmet off of Andre Gurode. Either these guys should have been fined more or Troy fined less. The two lesser fines involved player safety.

  43. stairwayto7 says: Oct 21, 2011 6:05 PM

Once again a Packer gives the finger and gets $10,000 fine, Troy tells wife he is alright and gets $10,000? Goodell and his posse need to go!

  44. kyleortonsarm says: Oct 21, 2011 6:07 PM

They should have suspended him a game instead.

  45. thejuddstir says: Oct 21, 2011 6:14 PM

This has nothing to do with the Steelers, as I am not a Steelers fan but to fine a guy 10G for using a cell phone (which is ok cuz he broke the rules) and not fining Schwartz and Harbaugh for their “unprofessional skirmish” is so laughable. I would like for Goddell to keep his power to punish but it gets harder and harder to justify with his double and triple standards.

  46. meatloaf025 says: Oct 21, 2011 6:25 PM

They have to. Can you imagine Pete rose having a cell on his hand? That is the big worry, all that can go behind it.

  47. thirdngoal says: Oct 21, 2011 6:28 PM

Troy, send the fine to Godell in pennies for that matter everyone that feels the fine is BS should do this. Let the commish and his cronnies spend their time counting pennies.

  48. thenewenglandpatriots12 says: Oct 21, 2011 6:33 PM

I see how people can say the NFL is messing up with all these fines but picture everytime the camera went to the sidelines the players on the sidelines were all texting it would ruin the game for me

  49. gobucs02 says: Oct 21, 2011 6:44 PM

What a terrible excuse to slap a fine on someone.

  50. localbandhero says: Oct 21, 2011 7:01 PM

I hate the Steelers. I grew up in Western PA as a Dallas fan, so there’s always been bad blood.

However, I’ve had the privilege of meeting Troy numerous times (he shops where I do) and he’s honestly the nicest dude I’ve ever met. Even took a pic with me while I had my Dallas hoody on. The guy is just a class act, and he gets it done on the field. I’m sure he’s not concerned about a 10k fine.

  51. dickroy says: Oct 21, 2011 7:04 PM

Ok, since this is such a big deal for the NFL and everyone, I have a solution. Let the trainer on the field have all the players home phone numbers. When a player gets hurt let him call the wife and let her know the situation.

  52. tomthebombtracy says: Oct 21, 2011 7:21 PM

    Just sayin’………..

Last year the Steelers had some 17 takeaways after 6 games and were leading the league in hard hits, strip sacks and fines!!!! And they were the fear of the league.

This year they’re nice guys. Few fines….and these are the cell phone from the bench variety. And they have two takeaways.

    Just sayin’

  53. steelernation1 says: Oct 21, 2011 7:27 PM

Godhel is a joke.the NFL is gonna become a garage league

  54. cannonballdookie says: Oct 21, 2011 7:44 PM

I’m a Steelers fan but rules are rules. Why couldn’t he call his wife in the training room or locker room? If he’s banged up, he can go to the locker room and make a quick call.

  55. dropkickbanana says: Oct 21, 2011 7:50 PM

One of these days one of the players is going to let Goodell have it, physically. Then write him a $20,000 check for necessary roughness on his way out of the office. That player will be a hero. “Player Safety” and some of the new rules or at least enforcement seem more and more like do what I tell you or you’ll pay.

  56. marcinhouston says: Oct 21, 2011 7:52 PM

Goodell loves the Packers and hates the Steelers. That why Woodson’s fine for throwing a punch was the same as Polamalu’s for calling his wife. If two players are wearing the same color uniform there is no way those two offenses are ranked on the same level. If Polamalu ever throws a punch we are talking 100k fine. If Harrison does it, 1yr suspension.

  57. taco87 says: Oct 21, 2011 8:40 PM

People cry about players making to much money or that they are getting fined too much or not enough who cares just watch the game. The league makes the rules it’s simple if they say you can’t wear a certain color shoe or not to talk on your phone don’t or your getting fined. Also he was just calling his wife could be but hey any number of assistance could have let her know he had a concussion though he wasnt carted off. And the lions game thing harbaugh shook his had gave him a pat on the back may have been rough but wow get over it. Swharts chased him down and instigated the whole issue so if anything he should have gotten a fine only if anything. Finally oh yeah go 49ers 5-1!!!

  58. jimeejohnson says: Oct 21, 2011 8:47 PM

There should be fines like this for texting while driving.

  59. davidhuber10 says: Oct 21, 2011 8:48 PM

It is just 10k he probably got it seating on his night stand it not that much money to him it just 1/2 of .25 of his game check

  60. citizenstrange says: Oct 21, 2011 8:52 PM

After leaving the game with a head injury Polamalu borrowed the cell phone off of a trainer so he could call his wife and tell her he was OK.

    Goodell where is your dignity?

  61. bodhizuffa88 says: Oct 21, 2011 9:16 PM

This reminds me of students getting expelled from school for having ibuprofen in their lockers. I’m expecting to see Goodell’s toothbrush mustache materialize soon.

  62. bostonbias says: Oct 21, 2011 9:29 PM

Why the Godell is beyond stupid. Use obs gesture on nation TV…10 G Rip helmet off 7.5 G…speak to your wife on the trainer’s phone 10G

What is worng with man? He is the worst commish in the history of the NFL.

  63. steelerdynasty2010 says: Oct 21, 2011 9:41 PM

so you were able to diagnose it from a tv broadcast huh? was he ever diagnosed with an actual concussion OR was he diagnosed with symptoms consistent with a concussion, ie a headache? do you have a concussion every time you have a headache armchair doc? hope they arent letting you write scripts for people.
perhaps, they didnt want to take a chance and preferred to wait until a full evaluation could be conducted before calling it a concussion, which it obviously proved to be only mild since he was able to pass a concussion test by tuesday.

  68. whatsafairway says: Oct 22, 2011 1:40 AM

Dude couldn’t wait 2 minutes until he got into the locker room?

If he wanted to alert his wife he’s okay all he had to do was smile at a camera and wave. The networks would have obliged, we all know they’re a top notch group who’s head and shoulders above the rest of the NFL 3rd party vendors.

  69. quittsburghstoolers says: Oct 22, 2011 2:04 AM

Must be nice to have too much money.

If this guy had half an ounce of brains, he could have friends sit in the stands in back of the Steeler sideline and have them do his texting (and other nonsense like that) for him.

Sure would be a lot cheaper to do that than laying out 10 Gs and there would be the added benefit for his financially poorer buddies to get to see the game and feel like they are doing something to help him out at the same time. Plus he gets to stay off the NFL’s “S” list.

Maybe all that Head and Shoulders he uses is seeping into his brain and making him stupid…

  70. kappy32 says: Oct 22, 2011 5:20 AM

  71. kappy32 says: Oct 22, 2011 5:36 AM

This type of behavior by a player is absolutely unacceptable. Where is Roger’s backbone? This slap on the wrist is a black-eye to the NFL. He should have been suspended for a minimum of 4 games, no question. Doesn’t he understand the dangers behind what he did? As he is sitting there on the phone, he is obviously distracted. Doesn’t he know that a player can come by & trip over his foot, leading to a serious shin injury? Also, doesn’t he understand he is a role model to tens of thousands of young fans? Every time a pee wee or high school player gets injured, they’re going to be sitting there on the sidelines, calling their wives & injuring people’s shins. It is going to be absolute mayhem.

And you figured EVERYTHING that was done and not done but seeing a mere 5-8 second clip on TV? With those kind of skills you should be working for the FBI and CIA. You would be able to crack cases in mere minutes by listening to only one phone call or looking at one picture.

  74. Deb says: Oct 22, 2011 2:33 PM

Well, Mike, you called it. Could have sworn someone handed him the phone, so just assumed he was talking with medical staff. We all know what assuming gets us. Yes, it’s typical Goodell pettiness. But in this case, the rule grew out of moronic players abusing phone privileges by tweeting on the sidelines and hiding cell phones in goal posts to make jerks of themselves after they scored. As with most things, a few twits ruin it for everyone.

  75. grimmlock42 says: Oct 22, 2011 6:30 PM

I wonder if Nascar fines drivers for getting on their cell phones after a crash telling their loved ones they’re o.k.? As a raider fan, I’m glad that Troy’s injury wasn’t serious. The guy’s been nothing but good for the game of football. Football isn’t football without Troy Palumalu. I’d pay that fine for him right now if I could. A little bit of respect for the guy would’ve been nice by the NFL.
