Getty ImagesOn the first carry of Sunday’s game in Dallas, DeMarco Murray raced 91 yards for a touchdown. And he wasn’t even close to done.
Dallas would ride Murray all day on the way to easily beating the St. Louis Rams, 34-7. Murray, who became the featured running back for the Cowboys today because Felix Jones is injured, carried 25 times for 253 yards — the best day for a rookie runner in Cowboys franchise history.
The Cowboys selected Murray out of Oklahoma in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, and in his first game as their starter he was nothing short of sensational. The Cowboys have to be thrilled at what Murray brings to their offense: It’s probably premature to say it after one career start, but Murray looks like the real deal.
The Rams look like a mess, in all phases of the game. Their defense obviously didn’t play well against Murray and Co., and the offense was helpless with A.J. Feeley playing for an injured Sam Bradford. The 0-6 Rams have to be considered one of the favorites to land the first overall pick in next year’s draft.
And that would not be a bad thing. If the Rams get the first overall pick, they could trade it to a team that covets Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and get a bounty of draft picks to help them surround Bradford with fresh talent. They need it, because this team is seriously lacking.
As for the Cowboys, they learned today that they have a great talent in Murray. He looks like a star in the making.
