It was a great week to have a bye

Buffalo Bills v New York Giants Getty Images

Six teams had last week off.  All of them return from the break with reasons to smile.

Giants: They got Justin Tuck, Prince Amukamara, Brandon Jacobs and Chris Snee back at practice Monday.  That’s a lot of key talent. The Giants also watched their closest competition in the division — Washington — lose to the Panthers.

Patriots: Following losses by San Diego and Baltimore, the Patriots are now the only one-loss team left in the AFC.  Plus Rob Gronkowski will return to the team more relaxed than ever.

Bengals: They picked up at least one first round pick and watched the Ravens lose.  The only downer: It probably won’t be two first-round picks if Carson Palmer doesn’t play better in Oakland.

49ers: Every team in the NFC West lost. Braylon Edwards and fullback Moran Norris are expected to return from injury. San Francisco’s magic number to make the playoffs is down to “Just show up for every game.”

Eagles: Like the Giants, they got healthy and watched Washington lose.  Plus Vince Young didn’t say anything crazy.

Bills: Okay, nothing great happened for Buffalo.  But they host Washington this week, fresh off the Redskins losing Tim Hightower and Santana Moss to injury.

Given the “competition” in their division, the 49′ers must not be allowed to get a first round bye.

Change the rules immediately to prevent this travesty. Call Goodell. Start a petition drive. Fairness demands nothing less!

  4. icanspeel says: Oct 25, 2011 10:50 AM

Is it really? The trend of teams losing coming out of a BYE continued. Teams with a bye last week were 2-4 this week. Only the Chiefs came out looking good.

  5. myspaceyourface says: Oct 25, 2011 10:52 AM

With the rash of injuries this past week, these teams should just be thankful they weren’t involved.

  6. marcsasharc says: Oct 25, 2011 10:59 AM

looks like Harbaugh’s “Improvement Week” was more than hyperbole. the 9ers improved their division lead and their playoff odds.

having your team on a bye week sucks when your team is good!

The 49ers have only played one division game thus far.

I hate to go here, but the Bills “host” the Redskins, albeit in the always sterile football environment at the Rogers Center.

I think Al Davis’ ghost is still running the Raiders. How else can you explain giving away what could amount to two #1 picks for Carson Palmer?

  11. novarito24 says: Oct 25, 2011 11:05 AM

49ers will win the division, the real test is winning a playoff game, I like my odds FAITHFUL!

Too funny! But y’know what? We’ll take it. Now if we can just get the 1st round Bye that will be the cherry on top. :D

  13. snowpea84 says: Oct 25, 2011 11:09 AM

Yeah, we did watch Washington lose. Making the Eagles win even less impressive than it was. And it was already unimpressive.

If the Raiders actually HAVE to give #1′s to Cinci, they’ll be happy to do it, since it involves them going to the AFC Championship game at least.

  15. ceadderman says: Oct 25, 2011 11:12 AM

@stephenjr311… They don’t GIVE you anything in the NFL. It’s earned. If the 9ers get the 1st round Bye they got it due to strength of Schedule(they’ve had the toughest thus far) and head to head. So if Philly miraculously make the Playoffs or if Detroit does, then we get the Bye because the 9ers beat both of them in their house.

Now toddle off to snivel in the corner where we don’t gotta hear it. Geezus, some people. ;)

i think it was a great bye week for the Giants and 49ers. for the 49ers you add a WR to help Crabtree and Davis out and for the Giants you get Tuck back and for me the big key they got was Prince Amukamura back. Prince maybe a rookie, but he’s needed and needs to be healthy.

The 49ers are not going to come close to gettin a bye, they will go 10-6, while the Saints will hit 12 wins. If they did somehow get a bye, they probably deserve it, the rules about that are fine. And people need to stop knocking the NFC West, when Arizona goes to the superbowl 2 yrs ago, Seattle beats the Saints, and the Rams were a dynasty not too long ago.

Keep overlooking the eagles. The eagles are a better second half of the season team than the giants. The eagles have more talent giants and will beat the cowboys. Don’t be mad that the giants are mediocre and will be as long as Peyton’s little brother is in town

I think you meant two first round picks. Even if the Raiders miss the playoffs, they will have to give up a first round pick and a second round pick. Most agree that they paid too much for Palmer. The other side of the argument says that they were desperate and believed the entire season would be lost (because Boller is awful) if they didn’t overpay for Palmer. Of course, they could have picked up Garrard off he scrap heap for nothing.

If the Eagles rookie kicker makes just 1 of 2 field goals less than 40 yards, the 49ers don’t win that game. That doesn’t excuse the Eagles for blowing a big lead and losing, but it doesn’t make the 49ers a great team for winning either.

  39. taco87 says: Oct 25, 2011 3:12 PM

The 49ers had field goal misses as well so eagles fans can stop crying. Why don’t you just go with if Justin smith doesn’t force a fumble the 49ers don’t win. All teams make mistakes the ones that make less and capitalize on their opponents mistakes win its simple.

Not the Niners’ fault if the other teams in their division suck. The Pats had it easy in the AFC East for the greater part of the 2000s yet no one discounted them winning their division year in and year out.

I agree, it’s not their fault but you can’t discount their luck. Back before expansion, when the NFCW was a four team division and the other two divisions had five teams, the division winner (usually the 49ers) rounded out their schedule with two games against the worst teams of the other two divisions.

    I CALL BULLSCHIT

    From Wikipedia:

Prior to 2002 (when the league expanded to 32 teams) the league used similar scheduling rubrics [that they use currently].

In other words, they tried to balance won-loss records from the previous year between all opponents (not like it matters much since teams aren’t always good from one year to the next, as reflected by the constant shuffle of playoff teams from one year to the next…plus you can add in injuries to key players that affect game to game matchups during the season).

laeaglefan, almost anyone can play your game. If the refs don’t call Ahmad Brooks offsides against the Cowboys (he wasn’t offsides), the Niners get the ball back, beat the cowboys and they’re 6-0 right now… or maybe they’re still 5-1 because your scenario plays out and they beat the boys, but lose to the Eagles. Every season is like this.

And smarterthantheaveragebears fan complaining that the Niners record speaks to the quality of the division after the Niners have only played one division game – priceless.

    @smarterthantheaveragebearfan

I don’t see how the 49ers strength of division matters when they have only played one division game. In fact, the 49ers’ opponents’ wins is greater than that of the Packers. The Packers haven’t really beaten anyone of note outside a narrow opening day defeat of the Saints. That doesn’t mean the Packers are bad.

The strength of schedule argument is the mark of the uniformed fan. It’s the worst NCAA logic applied irrationally.
