Redskins shut down Cooley, Hightower

To no surprise, Redskins running back Tim Hightower has been placed on injured reserve, after tearing an ACL against the Panthers on Sunday.  To some and/or a lot of surprise, the Redskins also have placed tight end Chris Cooley on injured reserve, ending his season.

Cooley had been battling a knee injury.  He suffered a broken index finger on October 16, and he was expected to miss six weeks.

Earlier in the season, he passed Jerry Smith to become the Redskins’ all-time leader in receptions by a tight end, with 428.

Given the emergence of Fred Davis, the next question becomes whether Cooley will catch a 429th pass.

UPDATE 5:16 p.m. ET:  The Redskins have explained to PFT via email that Cooley was placed on injured reserve due to his knee, not his finger.

  4. boswivel says: Oct 25, 2011 5:21 PM

No, the next question becomes whether the Redskins will win a 4th game.

  5. notthekiller says: Oct 25, 2011 5:22 PM

Well Cooley liked to talk trash as a sports media anchor for NFL Network, maybe he should get used to it with his downward spiral in on field production….

  6. mustyoldclapptrap says: Oct 25, 2011 5:25 PM

Would it be wrong of Tony Romo to laugh at this cruel turn of fate for Cooley? Nah..

The Bills are going to enjoy playing the Skins away this week. Much thanks to the league for allowing our home games to be played in Canada, eh.

  9. trainsaw says: Oct 25, 2011 5:32 PM

    Glad to see Cooley fail.

  10. skinsrock says: Oct 25, 2011 5:40 PM

Yeah, worst case scenario has hit our team & we will see you next year with a new franchise QB & more depth. The suck for Matt Barkley is on!

  11. noonie003 says: Oct 25, 2011 5:42 PM

Would be a terrible exit for Cooley as a Skins. With the emergence of Davis, would be bittersweet to see on of the most loyal Redskins leave.

  12. rjguerra says: Oct 25, 2011 5:43 PM

Good news for every other team in the NFC East.

Bad news for the Redskins and Cooley as now he will not be able to fight Tony Romo.

  13. kfd255 says: Oct 25, 2011 5:44 PM

Gee Wiz Willickers, Cooley, you sure did talk alotta crap about Romo to be a guy who hasnt performed thus far & now your done for the season…im in total disbelief!!..

  14. mataug says: Oct 25, 2011 5:49 PM

Davis is in his contract year, so I would be a bit careful to look too much into the ‘emergence’ of Fred Davis

  15. hailvictory10 says: Oct 25, 2011 5:50 PM

NFL is all about adversity and overcoming injuries……PAckers were SO beat up last year……NEXT MAN UP! This is why depth and the draft are so important

What a bunch of losers…….and none bigger than boys(chokers)roll!

Cooley’s no loser. Have you ever seen his wife?

Broken hand or not, he’d still make Romo squeal. (You Texans should understad that reference.)

  27. cbs1971 says: Oct 25, 2011 10:06 PM

Well, guess who is going to finish last in the NFC East division???? LOL!!!! Give you a clue, rhymes with “dead skins”….

  28. yevrag3535 says: Oct 25, 2011 11:31 PM

Cooley is a punk. He could never ever serve in the military. He is too soft. I have been in battle with real men and women who just keep doing it. Sore knee, broken finger? Sorry skin fans for having to put up with him. Weak…..

  29. texastornado82 says: Oct 25, 2011 11:54 PM

Romo should send him a “Get well soon” card.

  30. howley1 says: Oct 26, 2011 12:41 AM

“Broken hand or not, he’d still make Romo squeal.”

Squeal with laughter, maybe. Maybe Cooley should have spent more time with the trainers, less time yukking it up on the radio and twitter. Washed up @ 29 = so, so sad.

  31. polarbearsquares says: Oct 26, 2011 12:46 AM

Wonder why no mention about NFL karma because he was so jazzed to see Romo fail. I’m pretty sure if he was a Cowboy we’d see some “editorializing” about how maybe he should keep his mouth shut next time. Sigh. Haters gonna hate, I guess ….

  32. trollaikman8 says: Oct 26, 2011 2:10 AM

Grossman: We gonna win SB, trust me bro.
Hightower: We da best in NFC.
Cooley: I love publicly laughing at opponents who just beat us.

    Benched for scrub.
    Played in 3 games, IR.
    Played in 2 games, IR.

“…and with the 3rd pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Redskins select…”

    Fail skins.

  33. blackqbwhiterb says: Oct 26, 2011 6:42 AM

The next question is who will get the 2 active roster spots??
