Santonio Holmes still unhappy with his role

New York Jets v New York Giants Getty Images

So Plaxico Burress has his first of many three-touchdown games, Shonn Greene is starting to run once again like the guy whom Antonio Cromartie was afraid to try to tackle in January 2010, Rex Ryan has rediscovered his big-talking tendencies, and everything is right with the Jets, correct?

Not correct.

Winning the last two games has applied a film of waxy deodorant to a team that has a long way to go to fulfill its annual boast of winning a Super Bowl.  The biggest problem, in our assessment and as we understand it, is that receiver Santonio Holmes remains thoroughly dissatisfied with his role in the offense.

The man who received a big-money contract to remain with the team caught only two passes for 24 yards, bringing his seven-game total to a measly 311 yards on 24 receptions, with three touchdowns.  He was grumbling privately about his role before reports emerged of Holmes, Burress, and exiled receiver Derrick Mason complaining to Ryan about offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.  Holmes also has complained publicly — twice — about the offensive line.

The question now is whether Holmes will pop off again in the wake of Sunday’s game.  There’s a good chance he won’t; he’d come off as short-sighted given that the Jets won on Sunday, and as petty in light of Plaxico’s three-touchdown day.

But Holmes isn’t happy, and Holmes hasn’t been happy.  Finding a way to make him happy could be the biggest challenge this team currently faces.

    Is anyone surprised?

There aren’t many people that are happy with the Jets offense. Three red zone hookups masked a game full of inconsistency and curious playcalling tendencies.

I don’t think it’s a matter of Holmes being upset with this specific game. Seems it’s more a matter of the game not changing the feelings around the team, which it shouldn’t.

Schottenheimer is STILL doing maddening things.

Holmes doesn’t have a QB who can take full advantage of his talents. So they game plan around it.

Also, if he were on a team that had the locker room culture that’s required to win, he would be keeping that in-house. But he’s a Jet.

No wonder this guy is not in Pittsburgh!!!

I understand the Jets just won, but I have serious concerns about why we can’t get the ball to our 2 biggest playmakers, Holmes & Keller. I’m all for tossing it up to Plax in the end zone. That’s why we got him. But the rest of field should belong to Holmes & Keller. Part of this is definitely on Sanchez, part is on Shotty, and part is on the O-Line. Great win at San Diego, but in my opinion this win doesn’t heal an offense that is clearly deficient in many aspects. Holmes is right, although I’d prefer he keep it in-house.

as a practical matter, i have always found waxy deodorant to go along way toward a playoff run.

Santonio, for all his talent, is gonna be labeled a baby T.O. if he keeps up this stuff

  10. homelanddefense says: Oct 25, 2011 9:15 AM

well if Mangold didnt get called for holding he would have had 3 catches and a TD.

Cant believe this guy is considered a “leader” on that team.

Suggestion: Since this week is the jets bye, maybe PFT can adopt a similar policy about writing articles about the most dysfunctional team in the NFL that will implode and won’t make the playoffs from Florham Park?

  14. gpack22 says: Oct 25, 2011 9:49 AM

This guy is no chance a leader and quite frankly barely even in the top half of WR’s in the league.

  15. dankinator says: Oct 25, 2011 9:58 AM

I’m not happy either. He’s on my fantasy team and isn’t doing anything for me.

  16. ny82jy says: Oct 25, 2011 10:00 AM

And saying holmes”popped” off at the oline is a dam joke too. Anybody can listen to his comments. I know i did and just like everything else jets related it was totally overblown. The media (u guys) try your very hardest to make stories even when there isnt one like this article. The jets are on a bye. Leave them alone for the week. Jeez!

Oh Santonio, that twitpic of you drinking champagne when you resigned with the Jets is so much sweeter now.

Can we please stop with this nonsense! Is Sanchez Payton Manning? No. But the same people who tell me how good Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and Josh Freeman are always follow with how bad Sanchez is. Please look up stats and realize Sanchez when given time and good play-calling is a very serviceable NFL qb. He is no different then any other young qb, oh, except for the fact he went to the AFC Championship game is first two years.

Who the crap cares if this guy is happy? What a baby. If you care more about padding your stats than winning, go home and play fantasy with the rest of us.

Who was smoking the stickiest of the ickiest and made Santonio a captain on the Jets?

Just curious…. Where is the story here?
It looks like it must be a pretty quiet day in the news so you have to come up with something. As it looks here Holmes didnt say anything no?

PFT….. C’MON MAN “Chris Carter voice”

I’m a jets fan, and I’m sick of tone crying- look dude you got paid and won shut up, there is a reason why plax was open its cause you were doubled, you deff will get your chance by the end of the year.

  27. makeshersquirt says: Oct 25, 2011 12:03 PM

You can tell just how crappy that locker room is if Holmes was voted as a captain.

  28. habsman says: Oct 25, 2011 12:10 PM

Here’s hoping that guys like ‘Tone’ and Suggs never, ever, win anything.

  30. melikefootball says: Oct 25, 2011 1:04 PM

WOW who did not see this coming. Plax getting the td catches keeps Homes airplane rides in the hanger. He can’t handle that!

  32. nickmangoldsbeard says: Oct 25, 2011 2:16 PM

so pretty much holmes didn’t say anything and this is just you guys speculating and trying to come up with something negative towards the Jets?

  33. jetsfan136 says: Oct 26, 2011 9:08 AM

The biggest problem ‘in our assessment and as we know it’. lol. Santonio didnt say anything. Either PFT is branching into the mind reading game or just trying to stir it up again because they are annoyed the Jets won and are still in this thing. At halftime on Sunday the PFT Jets haters club were in their special place…their little haters castle mommy let them build in the basement out of couch cusions and pillows. 30 minutes of football later the castle was left in ruins.

not voted, appointed. seems strategic to me. long run will tell better how it works out. he should get more opportunities now that plaxico got rolling.
