Comments on: Time for another Vikings stadium statement

Having lived in Los Angeles (Hell A) a few notes:

1. The city, county and state have no money to build any stadium. Period.
2. Numerous proposals to modernize / rebuild the LA Colosseum and Anaheim Stadium either failed to materialize, or were insufficient to keep the Rams and Raiders in place.
3. The town of Irwindale (San Gabriel valley) paid the Raiders a sizable payment up-front to build a stadium in an abandoned rock quarry. The Raiders pocketed the payment, moved back to Oakland, and the quarry remains.
4. The city and county are still carrying debt obligations on a giant white elephant in the LA Colosseum, one of the oldest stadiums in the US. A facility which has suffered serious earthquake damage, and sits in the center of some of the city’s worst areas.

LA Vikings? Yeah. About as likely as them relocating to Dubuque.

PFT has done a wonderful job of reporting the stadium conflict in Minnesota.

The Metro Dome is fine. Maybe a few fixings and a new name might help.

Those who think we are weak fans not bending to Zygi’s wishes are lowered in their iq.

If Zygi was truly loyal to Minnesota, he wouldn’t hold the state hostage in a cruel economy.

He would wait until the economy rebounds.

He doesn’t get any respect for this action. BTW he is taking advantage of Minnesota’s funding weakness.

If the Vikings go—they go.

Their long history here has been nothing but heartbreaks and headaches.

They can be replaced and the people of this state are completely worn out with this conflict.

So the solution for some of you seems to be to dump all the tea into Mille Lacs. Let Zygi take his tea company somewhere else. No more tea, no more tax revenue from the tea, no more tea jobs, larger deficit. But at least you won’t have one billionaire to kick you around any more.

That’s why I referenced it. I’ve seen a lot of comments left by vike rubes blaming the repubs for stonewalling the stadium deal when it more the dummycraps than anyone else. They are the party of bike trails!

Salary cap $120 million divided by 53 = 2.26 million average player salary per year. $1 billion stadium. Zygi puts 20% down, takes out $800 million mortgage. Annual interest payments = $48.6 million. $120m – $48.6 = $71.4m left to pay 53 players. Average salary = $1.34 million per year. So by the taxpayers funding a stadium, each player on average gets $920,000 more per year. The median household income in MN was $55,000 in 2009. (US Census)

Why should taxpayers subsidize a stadium? So players can earn and extra $920,000 per year? So Zygi can pull in hundreds of millions? The construction jobs will gone in 3 years and all that will be left are all those high paying concessionaire jobs. 10 days a year. When politicians get involved in business, the taxpayer gets screwed, and the billionaires and millionaires get richer.

If Minnesota won’t build a new stadium for the Vikings at least Minneapolis will have more bike lanes and “green space” for the hipsters. Funny…in a land of 10,000 lakes they want green space in the half-city that is Minneapolis.

Where the hell is Arden Hills? I used to be somewhat familiar with the Twin Cities and its suburbs but I don’t remember that name at all. From the photos I’ve seen it looks like a wasteland. Why would the Vikings move out to bumbletwat? Even Detroit was smart enough to put their new stadium DOWNTOWN. The era of suburban mall stadiums was the 70s and 80s. I hope the Vikes stay in MN (they will), but come on, keep it close to the city center at least.

Its ridiculous. If the numbers are remotely close for the taxpayer, they should build it. This is an asset to the state and a long term revenue generator with visitors, hotels, restraunts and development. As a tax payer, I don’t like extra roads, too many hospitals, nursing homes, or every other non-revenue generating infrasture idea polititions can dream up, but they get built and there are no referendums. This is no different. There are too many weenies in the world with no vision.

All you have to do is put some weird funky statues here and there on the property and call it art….. MN will kick in 500 million because we seem to have no problem spending 40 k a pop on art in the parks and another 45 million to renovate some darn ballet dance building, not mentioning how many millions that have been spent on some theaters to renovate them…..

Some of you negatives out there need a reality check. Why would Zygi want to move to L.A.? That is no place for an NFL franchise, they have proved it time and again. A stadium deal will get done unfortunately it will take more creativity and patience. If Zygi is half the business man I think he is, he will just continue to use L.A. as leverage to eventually take the best deal he can get in MN.

davikes, all that’s pretty much true. But assuming there’s a profit and cap gains advantage in this that goes to Zygi, the taxpayers get the benefit of increased tax revenues and they avoid the loss of current tax revenues. Property tax revenues get whisked over to a different county so we’ll call that a push. And there’s the possibility that Zygiland actually brings other business in.

My pencil isn’t all that sharp – I don’t have the numbers – but it’s not a one-way screw job like you’re presenting.
