Here's why Congress gets involved into these issues:

Some people are brought up to believe that government, at all levels, is there to solve all of their problems, to support them, and to change laws to enforce their views.

This is because ONLY the government has the police power to enforce whatever they want.

So these Congressmen and women were either contacted by their constituents and asked to look into the matter, or they saw that they could score political points with some voters so they starting investigating sports b/c voters are passionate about sports.

If the U.S. acted like the REPUBLIC that it started out to be (see the U.S. Constitution), instead of the mob rule/politically correct/we must not offend style of government (aka democracy) then we'd be fine b/c we'd respect the rule of law instead of all the mob rule crap we deal with now

Does it bother anyone else that Congress is sticking their nose into yet another issue with which they have absolutely no business or authority to be involved?

Yep, just like how they're trying to take all the freedom out of the internet as well.
