Cowboys cut Tashard Choice

Bobby Carpenter, Tashard Choice, Amari Spievey AP

Six days after starting at running back for the Cowboys against the Rams, Tashard Choice is done in Dallas.

The Cowboys decided today to waive Choice, making room on the 53-man roster for linebacker Bruce Carter, a rookie second-round draft pick who is being activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

“I just want to say thanks to all the great Dallas Cowboy fans,” Choice wrote on Twitter. “My time in Dallas has come to an end and the best is yet come. God bless.”

Although Choice got the start against the Rams, he carried just twice for eight yards, and the game was marked by the emergence of DeMarco Murray, who set a Cowboys franchise record with 253 rushing yards on the day. Murray’s brilliant performance made Choice expendable.

Choice has gained just 75 yards on 28 carries this season.

When will he be arriving in Detroit?

    Good Choice.

  3. snarkzilla says: Oct 29, 2011 12:56 PM

Cut him? Based on CJ’s performance this season they should be signing him to a $19 million one year deal, guaranteed.

  4. 1captain1 says: Oct 29, 2011 12:58 PM

…And he’s picked up by the raiders.

  5. atx22dallas says: Oct 29, 2011 12:59 PM

Good! Now maybe he can play with his hero mike vick

  6. carpetpissers says: Oct 29, 2011 1:01 PM

He’ll be fumbling for someone else in no time.

  7. moneymike23 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:02 PM

I can’t believe I was dumb enough to pick him last week on my fantasy team.

First thing that went through my head also…a shame though, they’ll have to cut Eldra Buckley (???) to make room.

  9. bcdc26 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:04 PM

Tashard Choice is going to be the next Buccaneer

  10. kowboydmac says: Oct 29, 2011 1:05 PM

    Interesting.

The former three headed Cowboy rushing attack has transitioned to a single a rookie.

  11. reddcowboys says: Oct 29, 2011 1:06 PM

He’ll be a great pickup for someone. Just needs to be given a chance. DeMarco Murray just ran right past him.

  12. bronxtale says: Oct 29, 2011 1:06 PM

Choice has been a bum over the last two seasons, with huge fumbles against Washington last year and New England this year. Great move.

  13. vomitingliberals says: Oct 29, 2011 1:08 PM

    Go get him Dolphins!

  14. fumblenuts says: Oct 29, 2011 1:09 PM

    Wake up Detroit!!!

  15. ppc50 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:09 PM

Another guy, like Buehler-the highly unaccurate kicker, who thinks they contribute, but actually set the team back. Choice – 2 fumbles, 2 weeks in a row, including vs the Pats that led to a score and, of course, the terrible play before half vs the Skins last year (horrible play call too) that dictated their bad season. He is a big mouth liability, glad he is gone. Buehler, missed extra point, 70% kicker, who’s only value is long kickoffs, which are not really needed with the new rule change. Both should be cut, activate Carter (which they have) and they should have signed Harris (Lions got him).

  16. snarkzilla says: Oct 29, 2011 1:11 PM

John Beck handing off to Tashard Choice could produce 8 fumbles a game. Go get him, Skins.

  17. vuudu says: Oct 29, 2011 1:11 PM

He can now sell that Vick’s autographed gloves on ebay.

  18. jaywhitelending says: Oct 29, 2011 1:16 PM

I like the move as a Cowboys fan however, I wish they would have traded him and at least got a pick for him.

  19. hookem6903 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:22 PM

Can’t stay healthy. Can’t run. Can’t hold onto the football. Easy decision.

  20. jtwicej says: Oct 29, 2011 1:23 PM

This was a smart move, Tanner is a nice 3rd string RB or backup if a RB goes down! TC is not a bad RB, he will be on a team very soon! Good luck to you TC!

  21. qdizzle says: Oct 29, 2011 1:25 PM

Why didn’t this article mention his fumble average per game with less than ten touches per game?

He may just need a new start. I hope Bruce Carter balls out!

  22. 15gb2 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:28 PM

Since the broncos have the number 2 pick on the waiver wire choice will become a denver bronco..

  23. chazzmon says: Oct 29, 2011 1:33 PM

If they still had them on their schedule coming up Belichek would pick him up & say “Bring your playbook” … ya here me Andy Ried!

  24. num1eaglesfanyo says: Oct 29, 2011 1:36 PM

@jaywhitelending don’t you cowgirls fans know anything about football? You wish they had traded choice? Trade deadline has been over for weeks tard.

  25. howley1 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:38 PM

TC is a good guy that just needs a fresh start, I’d rather see them cut him than trade him somewhere he might not want to be. That said, Bruce Carter should be a beast when he gets his legs under him. Bruce Carter + Sean Lee = Bruce Lee!

  26. carpetpissers says: Oct 29, 2011 1:38 PM

You’re not going to get many chances when you consistently fumble every time you get a chance. That fumble in Washington at the start of last year pretty much summed him up.

The Cowboys mistake here was not unloading him on someone else when he had some value and they could have gotten something in return. At the end it was apparent he had no value and they had to cut him and get nothing. Another brilliant move by the brilliant GM that is Jerry.

That being said I’m certainly looking forward to what the future at LB will look like with Lee and Carter, two young, hungry and very athletic football players.

  27. tacoslinger619 says: Oct 29, 2011 1:39 PM

  28. polishkingski says: Oct 29, 2011 1:41 PM

How would they? The Rams and Dolphins have the worst records in the league. Even if it were like baseball where all the teams from the player being cut/waived/released/put on waivers’ league had first dibs, he was with an NFC team. All NFC clubs would have the chance before AFC clubs.

  32. steviekthr3e says: Oct 29, 2011 1:52 PM

After the injury bug bit McFadden, no doubt Choice is wearing silver and black sharing carries with Michael Bush.

  33. kennyfukinpowers says: Oct 29, 2011 1:57 PM

Good riddens to that fumbling, autograph seeking idiot. Now he can go to Philly and be Vick’s fluffer.

  34. 15gb2 says: Oct 29, 2011 2:03 PM

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the waiver wire was based on your record from the previous year? or is that only to a certain point in the season?

  35. johnnyjagfan says: Oct 29, 2011 2:07 PM

    @steviekthr3e:

Taiwan Jones in Oakland’s #3 RB & if McFadden misses another game, you’ll see him split carries w/ Bush and see how fast this kid is. Ain’t no way they’re picking Choice.

    Tampa? Different story.

  36. bedmanokc says: Oct 29, 2011 2:10 PM

HE should have been cut the moment his retorted ass when over and tried to give a HJ to Vick on NAtl TV after an ass whooping—what a total idiot and horrible teammate

  37. bigtrav425 says: Oct 29, 2011 2:12 PM

Ok Browns time to pick this guy up!

  38. disgruntledlesbian says: Oct 29, 2011 2:30 PM

As the only NFL player I actually know as a person, I have to say good luck to tashard. Very nice smart and humble guy. Hope he finds a good fit with another team

  39. andyreidisfat says: Oct 29, 2011 2:44 PM

I love how cowboys fans are “happy” this guy is gone because he fumbled acouple times but still think mr turnover himself romo is going to take them to a title.

Choice is going to do very well for his next team and I wouldn’t mind if he was an eagle next week. The guy is a great back up with a lot of football left. Another bad reactionary move by Dallas. Cut players who make A mistake and keep crappy players who are a mistake

  40. dallas001 says: Oct 29, 2011 2:47 PM

He cut his teeth in that game against Pittsburgh couple years back but never took the next step… talked a good game but never really made it happen,, let’s see if the coaches didn’t get the best outta him or is he just a servicable back in the NFL…..

  41. bunjy96 says: Oct 29, 2011 2:55 PM

Broncos, Lions, Dolphins or Bucs, which one?

Do waiver picks stay in the same sequence as the end of last or do they change at some point after the season begins?

If it changes, Rams, Colts and Dolphins are at the top of the list.

  42. bobhk says: Oct 29, 2011 3:04 PM

I remember plenty of Cowboy fans who were very high on Choice when he started getting playing time. Look where he wound up. Too early to think of Murray. Let him perform for a while before annointing him anything.
Cowboys fans are masters a hyping but most of those guys they hype are pretty average (e.g. Romo).

  43. silverhornet says: Oct 29, 2011 3:21 PM

Fully expect the Dolphins to put in a waiver claim. Former Cowboy. Upgrade over Slaton.

  44. EJ says: Oct 29, 2011 3:24 PM

He will be picked up by either the Redskins or the Eagles.

  45. btwicey says: Oct 29, 2011 3:28 PM

Sure all the cowboys fans say “great move” but cutting him a week after the trade deadline? That seems weird to me, he would have been worth something.

  46. 700levelvet says: Oct 29, 2011 3:37 PM

I remember when Howley1 considered him a brilliant draft pick by Jerruh the GM……..right Vox? Now, he’s a good guy..but cut…Romo’s ultimate fanboi has spoken

  47. vmannj says: Oct 29, 2011 3:39 PM

I like the activation of Bruce Carter. More depth on D and special teams. But why take only 2 RBs to Philly? Why not cut…oh, I don’t know…our injured kickoff specialist?

  48. vmannj says: Oct 29, 2011 3:44 PM

@bunjy96…I believe the waiver pick ups flucuate from week to week, based on record, with the same tiebreakers in place as the draft board. Colts are 0-7. Rams and ‘Phins 0-6 (not sure what order), then the 1-6 Vikings. But honestly, Colts and ‘Phins just used draft picks on RBs, Vikings have Gehert behind Peterson and Rams have Jackson and Cadillac. Will he really get any many more carries in any of those places?

  49. cantonbound13 says: Oct 29, 2011 3:54 PM

The Dolphins only pick up washed up former Cowboys like Colombo, Aoydele, Carpenter, Fassano.

  50. cluelessdufus says: Oct 29, 2011 3:55 PM

well theres someone decent in the free agency

  51. 700levelvet says: Oct 29, 2011 4:07 PM

Actually the trade deadline was 11 days ago on 10/18. Why are Eagles fans so stupid?

  55. spencerschewtoy says: Oct 29, 2011 4:26 PM

    Poor Choice.

  56. howley1 says: Oct 29, 2011 4:28 PM

Cowboys fans are masters a hyping but most of those guys they hype are pretty average (e.g. Romo).

    ——————————————————–

Better for fans to cluelessly hype a guy than for a front office to cluelessly hype a guy by giving him a $100 million contract (e.g Michael Pick, I mean Vick).

  57. manofaiki says: Oct 29, 2011 4:53 PM

    1. Felix Jones (when he gets back)
    2. DeMarco Murray
    3. Phillip Tanner
    4. Tony Fiametta (FB)

Dallas still has 3 running backs and a FB on the roster. Choice made running back #4. That’s one too many.

Tanner has more upside, so it’s his great progress in this rookie season of his that made Choice expendable as much as Murray’s emergence.

  58. paulsmith107 says: Oct 29, 2011 5:01 PM

So we keep a second place kicker who hasn’t kicked a ball all season long and cut a running back who has shown he can play?

  59. marcsasharc says: Oct 29, 2011 5:30 PM

weird decision. Choice is a good player to have especially as a back up. Tanner does not have more upside in my opinion.

  60. CowboyErik says: Oct 29, 2011 5:52 PM

Choice will be back. He isn’t done in the NFL.

  61. neovenator250 says: Oct 29, 2011 5:54 PM

  62. colt13 says: Oct 29, 2011 6:09 PM

The irony of the fumble on opening day last year is that was the only one he had last year.

  63. marcsasharc says: Oct 29, 2011 6:09 PM

he will definitely be picked up. he will have a job by Tuesday.

Neither is all that great. If you had even average intelligence you’d figure that out. The first one is not good for you. I’m not a Vick fan but c’mon. Romo is a pretty darn interception machine himself.

  65. smack8 says: Oct 29, 2011 6:54 PM

Guess the boys can’t win the super bowl now..I mean cmon its not like he was ever gonna b a super star..he is a servicable back..a dime a dozen

  66. quirtevans says: Oct 29, 2011 7:05 PM

I’m a little surprised they cut him, particularly since Felix Jones isn’t healthy yet. If fumbling is the problem, that can be fixed … Tiki was very turnover-prone until Coughlin taught him to carry the ball high and tight.

I have a feeling there’s more to the story.

  67. baldeaglejohnie says: Oct 29, 2011 8:12 PM

we don’t want him in Philly, he can stay a vick fan on somebody else’s team. besides we will have to cut somebody as well (barring a set back) when we bring back our #1 pick from last year Brandan Graham off the PUP. 1st week of 3 that you can activate those guys, I think Graham will be activated for next weeks game. but we get Cole back for Sunday night so our D is healthy again for Sunday’s matchup.

  68. laeaglefan says: Oct 29, 2011 8:47 PM

When Graham gets activated by the Eagles, Juqua Parker gets cut. The tribe has spoken, J.P. Time for you to go.

  69. howley1 says: Oct 29, 2011 9:29 PM

Garrett preaches that there are no “backups” and that everyone should consider themselves a starter because there will probably be a day when you are thrust into starting and you’ve got to seize the opportunity. Murray and Tanner have done so. Choice became the fourth option and as such would never even be activated on game day unless there was an injury. Better to let him go, he can probably start somewhere else. It was the right thing to do not only for the Cowboys, but for TC.

  70. tatum064 says: Oct 29, 2011 9:43 PM

He’s a good red zone guy, it might be a good pick up. I’m wondering has he just “lost it”?

Q: How does the waiver system work??
A: The following explanation was found in the 2005 NFL Record & Fact Book. As far as I can tell, it is still appropriate. “The waiver system is a procedure by which player contracts or NFL rights to players are made available by a club to other clubs in the league. During the procedure, the 30 other clubs either file claims to obtain the players or waive the opportunity to do so – thus the term “waiver.” Claiming clubs are assigned players on a priority based on the inverse of won-and-lost standing. The claiming period is three business days from the beginning of the League Year through April 30, 10 days from May 1 through the last business day before July 4, and 24 hours after July 4 through the conclusion of the regular season. If a player passes through waivers unclaimed, he becomes a free agent. All waivers are no recall and no withdrawal. Under the CBA, from the beginning of the waiver system each year through the trading dealine (October 19 1999), any veteran who has acquired four years of pension credit is not subject to the waiver system if the club desires to release him. After the trading deadline, such players are subject to the waiver system.”
    ————————————————
Read… 24 hours after July 4 through the conclusion of the regular season……. This season’s records, not last seasons. This is how the waiver wire can change from week to week.
