My god the NFL has such an inferiority complex vs college football. Get over yourselves NFL, smart football fans already space out on Sunday, B-O-R-I-N-G! Leave the NFL to middle aged, balding, overweight white men.

The blame should rest squarely with these NFL scouting departments. What a joke they are. Nobody held a gun to their heads. How on earth do you take a guy #1 overall and miss like this? At least the Raiders have two excuses, their owner was senile and J Russell gained 100 lbs and didn't care.

From all reports, A Smith is a high character guy, works hard, etc....from all evidence, SF is a terrible franchise. A joke. A far cry from the culture of winning he enjoyed under Meyer.

What NFL team drafts a QB so high and then asks him to run an completely different offense? You can't be that stupid can you?

Urban Meyer knows more about football than 99% of the coaches that ever coached in the NFL. There is a reason great head coaches can bank more money over a career in college than the NFL, 1) Universities have unlimited money, NFL teams do not 2) college coaches get to pick the players too

The NFL is stone age football. No innovation, no creativity.

Alex Smith has gotten a pretty raw deal in San Fransisco- a revolving door at offensive coordinator and head coach. Plus, there's been very little offensive talent around him. What impresses me is he doesn't piss and moan about it, or make excuses (Donovan McNabb could learn a thing or two from Smith!). Alex is a true professional, and I think his career will benefit from having a coach that believes in him and knows how to utilize his talent.
Tebow is another story completely...his throwing mechanics stink and he's HORRIBLE at reading defenses. As it's been demonstrated over and over...just because a guy is a super star in college doesn't mean he'll make a good NFL quarterback. Urban Meyer should probably keep his mouth shut...he didn't do anything to improve Tebow's mechanics or get him ready for the NFL.

Urban is correct. Alex Smith went to a terrible team and has had 6 Off Coordinators in 6 years and 3-4 head coaches in that time frame. That's learning a new system every season--nobody can expect to have sustained success with that kind of inconsistency, especially if you're on a bad team--which is what the Niners have been for the most part since he was drafted. The Broncos are AWFUL, and just traded away the one good receiver Tebow has to throw the ball to. You've gotta give QB's a team around them and consistent coaching in order for them to develop. Rodgers, Brady, Peyton, Big Ben, Brees, etc. all have 2 main things in common--good O-Lines and consistent coaching. You can't draft a QB to a terrible team, give him nothing to work with, then when the team and offense still suck, call the QB a "bust". So many young QB's never get a decent or fair shot to develop these days because they wind up on teams that are run with no fluidity

He does have some point, but it isn't like Urban Meyer was going about ensuring either would have the greatest success at the next level anyway. Meyer didn't work with Tebow to help with his delivery. He didn't show them how to take snaps under center. He didn't exactly show them how to progress passes either. He assembled great players that fit his system, but didn't help them grow so that they could expand into different systems down the road.

I think Meyer is starting to hear some of the blame that's been attributed to him. And to a certain extent, they're right.

Translation:

“Pay no attention to the fact that I may not be the offensive guru everyone thinks I am and that I may, in fact, be really terrible at getting QBs ready to play at the next level”.

“How will I ever get top QB talent to come to Ohio State when I take that job next year if recruits realize that my program doesn’t produce NFL ready Qbs?”

--------------------------------------------------
Well, as to your first point, it's his job to have QB's that win college games, not get them NFL ready.

And as to your second point, name the last Ohio State QB to make a pro bowl, yet Terrelle Pryor (no.1 recruit in the country, went there. Braxton Miller was pretty high up the recruiting food chain too). Not an Ohio State fan, in fact, as a Penn State fan i pretty much loathe them, but if you think Meyer will have a problem getting talent at OSU (qb or otherwise) you're out of your frikkin mind.

You sure the 49ers had a bad defense and special teams the past few years, Urban? It's actually been pretty good considering that they've been compensating for one of the worst passing offenses run by one of the worst QBs in football, who by the way had a pretty good running game to back him up.

Think the guy got screwed over with so many offensive coordinators, but I said the same thing when I heard that excuse for Jason Campbell, at some point, it's just an excuse.

There are essentially two schools of thought on passing offense in the NFL, vertical passing and the West Coast offense, with different variations on them.

Being inaccurate, throwing interceptions, and not making your teammates better have nothing to do with what offense you're playing.

At this point, comparing Alex Smith to Brady or Manning or Montana is irrelevant. Nobody finds those kinds of players very often. Before you start calling people idiots, you might think about working on your reading comprehension. He didn't say the defense "sucks." He said it has been bad in the past when they weren't succeeding. If you go back and look at the numbers, you'll see that while the Niner defense has been pretty good against the run for the last six or seven years (anywhere between top ten and lower 20's), they have not been good against the pass and they have not been good at getting off the field on third down. This year, they're doing a lot better in those areas. This year, they're not only better against the run (top five), but they have lots more three-and-outs than they have for many seasons.

He' chased the money and the glory even more than most coaches. He took over a loaded team from Ron Zook and won his first year while tearing the team apart. He left the program in shambles with no skill position players and more felons than NFL prospects. He quit on UF twice, but managed to stay on the payroll.
Has he ever watched the Colts? Good team with that guy named Peyton Manning and worst team with another QB.

The Ravens won a Super Bowl with Dilfer. Jeff Hostetler won a Super Bowl as a starter. Steelers were one step away from a Super Bowl with guys such as Kordell Stewart and Mark Malone. They had a defense & offensive lines.

You need good players around you but you also need all the QB tools and Tebow has none. Not sure about Alex Smith since the 49ers are never on television until this year.

People like to say that poor Tim Tebow was picked on from the beginning. The facts are indisputable: Tebow arrived at Denver and ended up number two or three on the QB chart behind a so so Kyle Orton.Had Tebow wowed em as they say he would have been the starter.

Cam Newton started, and other first round picks started because they were paid a lot and there was no reason to sit them, since the teams weren't that good, what was there to loose.
Tebow is never going to be the go to guy. He is not that skilled.

Alex Smith has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career, yes I said brilliance. In his case, Urban Meyer is 100% correct. 7 OC's in 7 years? Are you kidding me?

As for Tebow, considering he has a mere handful of games in the NFL to view I'm not sure what the hell we are judging yet. I will say this though. In every gane he's played in the NFL he has scored 14 points or more in the 4th quarter. That's a damn impressive stat. Even so, the jury is still out on him due to his hideous mechanics.

If any QB deserves a team built around him is Tebow. He is a different type QB and if he succeeds it will be because they are committed to wanting him to be the franchise QB. I don’t think Denver will and if Tebow is able to adapt to what Denver gives him then great but I don’t see Tebow a bronco next year.

He doesn't "deserve" anything. The only way you can build a team around Tebow is if you start 8 offensive linemen, a running back and a tight end that doesn' run any patterns more than 7 yards downfield.

Tebow didn't play better "when Fox opened up the offense", he played better when the Dolphins (perhaps the worst team in the league) went into a Prevent Defense and allowed the receivers space to be absolutely wide open. His TE bailed him out big time on a horrible pass that wobbled so bad, most people wondered if it had been deflected.

People are already making excuses for if/when he fails.

And its that way of thinking that will keep you coaching in college. The college gimmick QB doesnt work in the NFL. Smith and Tebow both suck as NFL QBs and always will. Make all the excuses you want for each one, Smith is in year 7 and still sucks. Look at Stafford, Bradford, Cam, Dalton etc. All way ahead Of Alexs 7 year learning (excuses) curve.

Watch some film bud. The offensive line has been Alex smiths problem. It makes me wonder if urb even watches football.

It's not just the o-line, most of their receivers since 2005 have been bad. There is Crap-tree who is mediocre and makes JJ Stokes look like a pro-bowler (really, 5-drops already, after 7 last year, are you kidding me? Learn to catch...). And Gore who is one of the worst receiving backs in the NFL (ok runner, crappy receiver). Then we have palookas like Lelie, Ginn, and a host of other fifth-rate clowns whose names I can't remember. All of whom were lousy WRs.

And the stats bear it out. Again. The 49ers are tied for 11th in the NFL in drops. They've thrown the fewest passes (32nd) in the NFL.

Those numbers should be close to each other. Instead, they're widely divergent. And not in a good way.

It took Davis until 2007 to play well. It took Morgan until this year to play well. And Walker, who has playing well for two years, has been ignored by the OCs until this year.

So, it's not just the line. Except for Davis, and Morgan this year (plus Walker in a very limited role) none of the other receivers on the team have done anything since Smith was drafted.

It's a joke that Smith gets blamed for everything. I'd hold the ball and check down too. These receivers have been clowns since TO left town.

The best way to find a college QB is to look at his production against winning teams/bowl teams. Get rid of all the padding from Div II and 1-11 teams and just look at how did he perform against top teams.

When you look at that criteria, Tom Brady isn't a 6th rounder. In the past 15 years he was one of the top 'big game/tough opponent' QBs in college coming in at #3 behind Bradford and Roethlesberger and just ahead of Peyton Manning. Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers. All of whom have been outstanding QBs.

Alex Smith came in at 11th, ahead of Schaub, Stafford and Flacco. That's pretty good.

Tim Tebow was down there with Chad Henne, Colt Brennen and Troy Smith. Not because anyone hates him, just because he showed in college he couldn't play well against good compettion. And QBs that fail against good college competition rarely succeed in the NFL.

And it's not that he can't succeed. I've seen poorer college QBs succeed -- David Garrad was one. But for every Garrad there are 20 failures... So the betting man says the chances aren't very good that Tebow will succeed.

Hard to argue that point after seeing the Colts do that for Manning and now lose Manning. How did that plan work. Ask the Patriots how to win 11 games without Tom Brady, because they know. Ask the Steelers how to win 3/4 games without Ben Rothlesberger, because they know. Ask the Packers how to win without Ryan Grant, Jermikael Finley, and half the defense, because they know. The best TEAMS dont rely on one player and never should. Especially an inaccurate QB like Tebow.
