Rob Ryan: “I got out-coached”

Cowboys defensive coordinator Ryan reacts on the sideline during the Cowboys loss the Eagles during the third quarter of their NFL football game in Philadelphia Reuters

Remember when Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan promised to “beat the ass” of the Eagles, whom he derided as the “all-hype team“? Yeah, it didn’t quite work out that way.

After the Eagles beat the Cowboys 34-7 on Sunday night, Ryan couldn’t do much more than admit it was his defense that got its ass beat.

“It’s not the first time I’ve said something and gotten my butt kicked,” Ryan told the Dallas Morning News after the game. “I got out-coached, out-everything. It’s all on me.”

Ryan’s defense just wasn’t up to the task on Sunday night. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick completed 21 of 28 passes for 279 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Vick also ran seven times for 50 yards, and LeSean McCoy had 30 carries for 185 yards.

So Ryan’s comments are coming back to bite him, although he can take solace in the fact that owner Jerry Jones said after the game that he doesn’t have a problem with Ryan’s comments possibly being used as a motivational tool in the Eagles’ locker room.

“I don’t have that issue,” Jones said. “I just wish comments could make a difference somewhere. They don’t, anywhere.”

Ryan’s words make no difference at all when his defense plays like it did Sunday night.

While I was so happy to see Rob Ryan have to eat his words, I highly doubt they had anything to do with how the game ended up. Let’s face it, Eagles-Cowboys isn’t a rivalry as much as it is a hatred. Neither team should ever need a reason to get up for a game against the other. Oh, and you don’t develop a 12-0 (now 13-0) record after the bye week by accident. You can make all the bad time out jokes you want about Reid, but when you give him an extra week he’s going to come up with a few new wrinkles and make some adjustments to correct his own team’s problems. That also explains why his record before the bye week is around 55-60% and his record after the bye week is over 70%.

Another lovely product of the Goodell era: the mandate that assistant coaches MUST be made available to the media. I hate the Goodell era. It’s all about icing and not cake.
The job of the HC has gotten exponentially harder in the Goodell era also because of all the things that have come to pass during his reign.

Rob and Rex really are the same guy. Sadly for Rob, when Rex gets fired in NY, other teams will have become tired of the ‘all hype show.

Not sure it helps him get a H/C gig when he tells the world he’s the problem.

The Eagles finally realized that their real offensive weapons are LeSean McCoy and Brent Celek instead of trying to force the ball to DeSean Jackson and Maclin down field for big gains. Big plays are great when they work, but you can’t just expect Vick to be able to scramble for a first down or throw the ball up to Jackson/Maclin every down. The Cowboys game planned around what the Eagles had been doing for the first part of the season but then they saw a more balanced attack in the game and had no answer.

I agree, Maybe the problem is in the defensive meetings that Ryan’s displacement of oxygen and total misuse of breathing it deprives his defensive players of theirs and leads to this type of under-performance.

The case certainly could be made that with some of the dumb ass statements Rex and Rob make that they were deprived of oxygen at birth.

    ________________________
Not quite a fluke. 2nd game in a row the Eagles shut down a team that had been running the ball well. Take a look at those earlier losses and almost all of them came when the Eagles shot themselves in the foot with dumb mistakes. This is what happens when the Eagles offense plays a clean game. Eagles made the wide 9 a little less wide, helping them on run def. They’re also finally using the CBs the way they should have been used to begin with. It’s taken a little while, but the defense seems to actually be playing as a whole unit now instead of individual pieces. Don’t know if the Eagles can fully pull themselves out of the hole they dug earlier, but they certainly look to be ready to compete now.

First off, I’m a Jets fan and HUGE Rex Ryan fan…so obviously I enjoy how his brother is.

With that being said, it’s a little different. Rex is the HEAD COACH. If he wants to talk, fine. It’s his team.

Rob is a coordinator. Where is the Cowboys’ HC?

It’s just weird. I understand Rob’s personality, but if your not the HC, then you should tone it down.

Makes me wonder about Garrett’s leadership, if he can’t even control and is overshadowed by his DC.

In case one of the above’s team makes the Super Bowl we can have Romeo Crennel has an alternate. The best thing about that choice is that he has a Masters degree in – wait for it – PHYSICAL EDUCATION!!!

You people are nuts. Rob was out coached he says, in reality he ain’t that good. Dallas played way below their capability Sunday. That’s the plain and simple fact. Giants win this division. Beagles watch the playoffs this January. If I was a Philly fan that’s better than getting it handed to you in the playoffs AGAIN.

Yeah, fluke. It happens to all teams sometimes (like last year’s Eagles vs. the Titans, Saints v. Rams yesterday, I could list games all day but I won’t). Cowboys couldn’t keep running the ball after they fell behind so fast… Murray averaged over 9 yards per carry, mostly in the first half. Cowboys were flat, Eagles were on, end of story.

So is he that bad, or are the Eagles that good? I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

  71. MTLighthouse69 says: Oct 31, 2011 10:37 AM

I don’t understand why the Cowboys are allowing Rob Ryan to spout off like that, the Cowboys don’t need any more distractions.

I do think his vocal persona is going to affect his ability to get any head coaching gig. Of course, all that could change if his brother Rex, another vocal guy, some how manages to win a Super Bowl.

Still, I think it is far more likely for Rex to lose his head coaching job long before Rob ever gets one.

This game was exactly what we have come to expect from these 2 teams. The entire NFC East is so inconsistant right now its amazing. The Cowboys show up one week, they dont the next. Same with the Eagles. The Giants had to make a comeback to beat the Dolphins, AT HOME. Only the Redskins have become consistant. Consistantly bad, and a lot of that has to do with injuries that they couldnt afford. Not everyone is the Packers who can lose half a defense and win the Super Bowl. Giants win the NFC East by default. Call it a competitive division because everyones so inconsistant that any team can win or lose in crazy ways week to week.

  74. bigbirdsfan says: Oct 31, 2011 10:48 AM

Joetoronto probably another vick hater. God forbid somebody make a horrible mistake; do the time (unlike many other guys in this league who get a free pass) and actually try to better himself.

Attention all teams; the Eagles are playing man coverage. What does this mean for you? Good luck throwing the ball…your team just became one dimensional and if you fall behind early; game over. How scary must it have been for Romo to look at the defense and see Nnamdi, DRC and Asante? Dez, Miles and Jason looked to be below average and we know that isn’t true.

Hey Joe, be as bitter as you want but just know that the Eagles will win the NFC East then carve up teams in the playoffs.

I am a Falcons fan and after what i saw last night the Packers are THE ONLY team with a chance to beat the Eagles when they play like that. Cudos to them for getting it together. Should be fun to watch.

Ridiculous as this sounds, that was the quietest 4 sack game ever. Three out of the four times Ware got a sack, the Eagles came right back with a big play to nullify it. Just check the game tracker:

    1st and 10 sack, followed by a 24 yard completion on 2nd and 12

    1st and 10 sack, followed by a 24 yard completion on 3rd and 11

1st and 10 sack with a forced fumble, followed by a 22 yard run on 2nd and 18

    3rd and 1 sack, punt on 4th and 13

Sacks are highly coveted because they are usually drive killers, but by no fault of his own the Cowboys were not able to capitalize. The game was already well out of hand by the time he got his fourth.
