Antrel Rolle on Wes Welker: “I can handle anything”

Antrel Rolle AP

Giants safety Antrel Rolle says he has nothing to fear when he lines up against Patriots receiver Wes Welker on Sunday.

Asked if he can handle Welker in his usual role of covering the opposing team’s slot receiver, Rolle said, “I can handle anything.”

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News writes that when Rolle was asked why Welker is tough to cover, Rolle said he wouldn’t know because Welker won’t be hard for him to cover.

“I don’t know,” Rolle said. “You’ve got to ask those guys he’s giving trouble to. I don’t plan on having to answer to those questions.”

Welker will do his best to make Rolle answer those questions on Sunday.

Well, Rolle may not have to worry about it since Troy Polamalu’s “legal” near-beheading gave Welker a neck injury and he’s missed practice.

Antrelle talks the talk and walks the walk.
    Ask the Eagles.

Welker got shut down by Gerald Sensabaugh. I’m inclined to agree with Rolle.

Antrel, please consider using Severe Stick-um, tractor beams, voodoo, whatever. Welker is going to make you look silly.

Well last time antrelle rolle spoke his mind it was last year Philly-giants he spent so much energy flapping his lips that on game day he was pedestrian and giants offense spotted his defense a 4score 4th quarter lead and… Well… Ya kno wat happened…. One of the biggest come backs in NFL history capped off with a game ending put returned for td courtesy djaxx!!! Of course antrelle rolle coulda stepped his game up a few levels to match his smack talk and perhaps giants win that game!!! He likes making the news on weekdays not Sunday’s I take it!!

  8. jrfrom508 says: Nov 2, 2011 4:52 PM

Oh Antrelle… Tommy and the team are in a bad enough mood as it is. Tisk tisk tisk.
    Sunday, let’s seeeeeeee it!!!
    Pats 42, giants 10. Anyone…. anyone?

As last Sunday demonstrated, when Welker has to face persistent coverage by an actual cornerback, and can’t be successfully motioned around into zone mismatches or free releases, he can be pretty thoroughly contained. Because he’s a moving part in an offense that has much more to do with his statistical success than he himself does. He is not and never has been a top-notch wide receiver, individually.

Of course, Antrelle Rolle is not an actual cornerback, so…

i wouldnt say this is smack talk, they asked if he can handle welker, what is he going to say? I have no shot, hes been having a real good season so hes gonna torch me for 10 catches and 150. The worst safeties in the league would say the same thing. He didnt just jump on the radio and start discussing welker. Rolle has a huge mouth but this was a little blown out of proportion. If/when he does get torched on sunday, hell just blame giants fans again anyway, eventhough its a road game.

  21. isphet71 says: Nov 2, 2011 5:19 PM

  27. bullcharger says: Nov 2, 2011 5:25 PM

Boring. If he covers Welker, Brady will throw to someone else. If he shuts down Welker and the Patriots win then who cares. Similarly if Welker has 10 catches and the Patriots lose it doesn’t matter either. The winner of the game is all that matters.

  28. spartan31fan says: Nov 2, 2011 5:25 PM

antrelle talked smack this year too….which of course you failed to mention….and the giants smacked the eagles around.

the giants game wont come down to antrelle rolle…it will come down to how bad a beating the giants pass rush can inflict on brady. if they dont rough him up he’ll tear the giants secondary to shreds.

the giants gameplan should be to do everything they legally can to knock brady out of the game.

“Well last time antrelle rolle spoke his mind it was last year Philly-giants ”

Once again, a Philly troll pipes in and is dead wrong. Rolle recently predicted he would have no trouble handling DeSean BEFORE the Giants and Philly played THIS season. DeSean’s stats – 2 recs for 30 yards. Giants 29 – “Dream Team” 16. I hate players who run their mouths, but he did EXACTLY what he said he would. It’s bad enough you clowns follow the one team that ruins the NFC East’s reputation for winning Super Bowls. The least you can do is try to get at least one fact in your posts correct.

Then the guy signs with the giants and when the packers come on the schedule he guarantees a giants victory only to get smoked on like a 70 yard touchdown by jordy nelson and ended up losing 45 to something. Rolle wont have a problem covering Welker because he wont have to do it long. Just as they showed the league back in the SuperBowl matchup the Giants just need to hit Brady and its game over. Osi, Tuck, JPP and Kiwi can all be on the line at 1 time. Unless Pats go max protect it’ll be over before it starts. If they go max protect, everyone is doubled.

    No, of course not.

But have you ever heard Bill Belichick say “We’re playing a team that sucks, they’re 1-5 and we’re not going to have any problen beating the crap out of them” ……

No, Belichick always finds something GOOD to say about an opponent, which typically “good” (ie non-trash talking) players do as well.

This moron is average, at best, and should probably be a little respectful of a player the caliber of a Wes Welker.

  47. jg725 says: Nov 2, 2011 8:17 PM

First of all – I’m a giants fan – but – welker has caught 100+ passes for a few years in a row now – so all the “experts” on here that are sooo smart (bump him at the line, etc…….) do you really think that NO defensive coordinator has thought of these “secret strategies” that will stop welker and shut him down?? I do love the fact that the smartest people in the world are right here on pft!
And eagle fans – let go of last years collapse already – last i checked it didn’t get the eagles any farther in the post season than usual – and giants kicked your butt already this year(not it means anything in sept – but at least i’m a realist) – so just pipe down philly – last i checked, you’re still waiting for that elusive first super bowl trophy – nuff said…………

He is. Anyone who watches the film or played DB at LEAST at the high school level knows he backs up his play. No safety in the NFL has as many responsibilities as he has and EXCELS whether on the line, at the second level or deep in coverage.
