Thanks to those who set me straight on the coin toss applying to teams from different conferences after other factors have come into play.

The Dolpjins and the Colts have problems that go way beyond a need at QB. The Dolphins are rotten from the head down. The Colts have gotten old and brittle. Andrew Luck is an important piece to the puzzle because good QB’s are so hard to find. Both teams have bargain basement backups who prove that you get what you pay for.

The great things about the NFL is the fact that personal rules allow a team to Improve quickly! The suck for Luck thing is just a way for fans to cope with really bad season. Dolfans have suffered with incompetency for years. A kind word from Oliver Luck would be nice. It is in his son’s best interest if he came to the reality that he is going to play for a bad team that is rebuilding. I am sure Luck wants to play for the Niners but I doubt if they will give up their draft for 1 Player. Trading the pick could have major repercussions, too. Only time will tell.

one thing i havent seen discussed, is what if andrew luck does not come out in the draft…i checked standfords site and he is a redshirt junior, so he could return for college for another year…now wouldnt that make all thisdebate moot

The upside for the bad teams this year is that Suck for Jones and Suck for Barkley, while lacking in alliteration, are still fine results. All three of those guys may be better than any QB coming out since at least Matt Ryan, if not Rivers/Big Ben.

Miami made the right choice passing on Mallett and the 2nd tier guys. They need a franchise QB, and this is the year that happens.

If they take a CB (i.e., Fletcher over Brees) or a WR/KR (Ginn) I will kill myself. Period.

Since the Colts and Fins are in the AFC first tie breaker is strength of schedule, then if they both were to win a game divisional and conference records

Why saying the Colts would throw games to obtain an advantage in the draft is as crazy as saying the 14-0 Colts would tank games and not pursue a perfect record because they thought it would give them an advantage in the playoffs

Obviously you’re talking about Oliver Luck and not Andrew.

His stats are on par with Elway, and he’s WON more games than he did at Stanford. He may the best QB of this generation and may actually live up to the hype.

It’s absolutely understandable that teams will suck for Luck and Indy knows better than anybody. Where would the Colts be without that number 1 pick 13 years ago? A team can prosper for years or an entire decade by hitting on a number one pick like that. Nobody will remember the bad season before a decade of dominance. Teams have bad years all the time and why try to scrape together a few wins in a meaningless season and risk the chance of losing out on a once in a generation prospect? Ya think the 97′ Chargers would be upset if they lost one more game that year and got a crack at Manning? I think not

Deb/packfaninchitown, The coin toss you referred to was because the teams were in separate conferences. The Dolphins and Colts are both AFC so it will be similar to the tiebreakers for getting into the playoffs on a WC. The odds of a coin toss settling the tie in this case are pretty slim.

When Pittsburgh and Chicago had the same sorry record for the 1970 draft, Dan Rooney and Ed McCaskey met with Pete Rozelle for the coin toss. Dan deferred to Ed for the call, and Ed called heads. It came up tails, the Steelers took Bradshaw … and the rest, as they say, is history.

I seem to remember another can’t-miss prospect out of the Pac-10. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 34 TDs his senior year after throwing for 3,000 and 21 TDs the year before. He got a couple of big rivalry wins and broke his team’s Rose Bowl drought, but fell in a close game to the eventual national champion. He ended up 3rd in the Heisman voting that year. All the “experts” and “analysts” thought he was a sure thing.

That guy’s name was Ryan Leaf.

1- the league that Olly Luck played in was a completely different animal, different business factors, different coaches, different motivations, and very very different player psychology .

2- the coach / gm / and or owner can put their thumb on the scale and change things dramatically… it doesn’t take much…. spoiled leadership, ignoring key talent needs, all kinds of stuff…. it doesn’t take a grand conspiracy

Oliver Luck is no dummy. He knows that all these fans and “experts” are setting his son up a a colossal failure.

If he doesn’t come close to expectations, he will get lambasted. Andrew is a very good – not great QB. After you get off the floor, google Luck’s highlights. You’ll be amazed at how many of his passes are for 5-7 yards. Hardly anything to write home about. His down the field throws of 20 or more are lobbed and not on a line. His aerial bombs are routinely short and are jump balls or ints. He is a good athlete with good footwork, who keeps plays alive and runs well.

The main thing you should look for is how well he throws the 15-20 yd “out pattern”. good luck finding any. He has suspect arm strength and does more dinking and dunking, than really spinning it down field.

Some team is gonna be disappointed. He is not the second coming.

Can you guys stop making this dude out like hes the next Elway. My god, I hope he’s this good because I will be the first person rooting for the number 2 & 3 guys in the draft (Jones? Barkley?) to make it big. Personally with the fins luck Andrew would suck and the media will write for 10-20 years how bad the Andrew Suck deal was for Miami. So I’d rather just see Jones or Barkley, less risk, less hype more rewards if they do become big.

Oliver is right. Only the media brings up this stupid notion that teams will tank to get a college player. No one is going to tank their performance so they can get a college kid. They are all fighting for their jobs year in and year out. On a losing team EVERYONE is evaluated and you don’t want to tell the next regime that you where failing on the field because you wanted to “Suck for Luck”.
