The guy is a class act and a role model for how the game should be played. Hats off to him. Lets hope he gets a shot at the Super Bowl like Walter got before he retired. Payton played on his share of bad Bears teams. Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, Gale Sayers, and Barry Sanders never saw a Super Bowl. Jim Brown made it to the NFL Championship game his rookie year, but only made the playoffs one other time in his career, despite winning the NFL MVP 3 times.

Doesn’t mean those guys weren’t great. Its hard to put a team together that can pass and run equally well. I’ll put my money on Peterson getting there before his career is over.

The Vikings played in an NFC championship game two seasons ago. The Vikings are not THAT bad either. They have lost 5 games by less than a score each. They make a few more plays and they are 7-1.

The Lions were losing a lot of games by more than 5 when Barry was playing.

Peterson fumbled twice in the NFC Championship Game, losing one.

It would be a shame if the Vikings best chance at the Super Bowl in the Peterson era was wasted, in part, by Peterson.

For the past few years, I’ve been lamenting the incompetence of the Vikings’ personnel department in failing to upgrade the OL. Just imagine what the Vikings could accomplish if they had an above-average (instead of a mediocre) OL and just an average QB/WRs — they would pretty much be able to have Peterson run the ball on anyone and eat-up tons of clock-time, thereby helping the Vikings D, too. It makes a ton of sense.

A guy like Peterson is rare in this day of me-first players who get paid and then don’t perform or whine about their next extension because they’re already broke paying off baby mommas and jewelry. Hate the Vikings, but am a big Peterson fan.

This team has had some good games wasted in the second half. This is not a bad team. Ajustments in the secondary and WR(Place WEBB here) And some more grouth from Ponderosa and we will be just fine. AP and Jared Allen still have to be accounted for. Not worried, just impatient.

AP is good! He is running behind a line like that and an eight man front and still getting yards. Kinda like how LT was in his early years with the Bolts. He was very good but the team had lousy records.

100 million bucks, thats why. Plus, as a Pro he has been on a team that won the division twice, went 8-8 once, and once went 6-10….thats one full loosing season, I will give you that after this year it will be two, but right now its one. That hardly constitutes staying in a place “that continues to have loosing seasons.”

Peterson’s numbers are even more impressive when you consider:
1) AP’s been playing with either the worst QB in the league (McNabb) or the most inexperienced (Ponder). Explains the 8-man fronts.
2) AP’s been running behind one of the worst offensive lines in football. Charlie Johnson at LT? An aging Steve Hutchinson? Anthony Herrera coming of ACL surgery (now out with another knee injury)? Terrible.
3) AP’s poor/inexperienced QBs have been throwing to an injured Percy Harvin (rib) and a couple of other guys who likely wouldn’t start on 30 other teams.
Put AP on a team with a decent line, competent QB, and at least one guy who can get open deep, and you can bank on 1,800-2,000 yards and 20 TDs. Without them, though, AP’s still on pace for 1,600 yards and 18 TDs. Amazing.

Hey, maybe the Vikings could trade Peterson in a huge deal moving a bunch of scrubs but netting the Vikes about 8 draft picks (including 3 1st and 3 2nds (conditional)) that eventually will evolve into 5 quality starters for them. Nah, the Vikes couldn’t hope that a team would be that stupid to make a trade like that…

karulytic- Thats because McCoy isn’t on the same level is AP. They actually have a supporting cast in WRs that don’t suck, and a QB that draws more attention than any other QB in the league.

The only RB that is even close is Arian Foster, but he also has a better supporting cast.

I understand your “journalistic” need to be dramatic, but the Vikings made the NFC Championship game in 2009, made the playoffs for several years before that, and have now played 1.5 years of bad football.

more televised games with a better squad = more endorsements. / a better offense = less 8 man fronts = increased production / a good team = shot at the playoffs / and you don’t have to live in Minnesota.

Isn’t it funny that 3 RBs signed big time contacts this year (Deangelo, CJ2K, and AP) and Peterson is the only one living up to it? He’s worth every penny. He’s a great teammate, and awesome person, and an AMAZING player. I’m happy I get to witness a player like AP, because it doesn’t happen very often.

Christian Ponder will open things up for him. Peterson might have had his two best games of the season in the last two that Ponder started. Carolina frequently dropped a guy back to defend the pass and Peterson had his best receiving day of his career.

If the Vikes can find some O-Line help in free agency, Peterson will have his best year’s in front of him. I think they’ve found their QB, TE, obviously RB, now just some studs up-front and a WR or two and the Vikes will contend with anyone next year, wherever they play.

Is he actually under the radar, though? Despite the Vikings season I’m not sure anyone actually thinks he’s been doing poorly.

Since you pointed it out, though, worth noting that LeSean McCoy has more yards per game, touchdowns per game, long runs, yards per carry (5.6 overall, vs Peterson’s 5.37 against non 8 man fronts) and fewer fumbles. Though if you asked the average person they wouldn’t put McCoy in the same league as Peterson.

AP’s 8 man front stats are comparable to Chris Johnson’s season stats. Now that’s saying something!

As a Vikings fan, we’re wasting him. He can’t take this pounding for many more years. If we just would have drafted around him and kept Sidney Rice rather than gamble everything with Favre, we’d be looking a lot more like the Lions. Young, good talent, with potential to be strong for as many years as AP plays.
