Peyton Manning takes a shot at Phil Simms

A discouraged Indianapolis Colts quarterback Manning looks on in the fourth quarter as the New Orleans Saints defeated his team 62-7 during their NFL football game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans Reuters

Well, the flesh may be weak, but the spirit still has a perpetually impatient look on its face.

The decision of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to show up unannounced and meet with the media included a comment about the recent ridiculous remarks from Phil Simms of CBS and Showtime that Manning won’t “let” the Colts draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.

“I don’t talk to Phil,” Manning said, via Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star.  “Phil doesn’t talk to me.  He did text me after that, saying ‘Hey, sorry to drag your name into this.’  I wrote back, ‘Phil I don’t know what you’re talking about.’  He said, ‘Well on my show, Inside the NFL, I made this statement.’  I said, ‘Phil, I hate to break it to you, but I don’t watch your show, along with a lot of other people that I don’t think watch that show.’  Giving himself a little more credit than probably was merited.”

Damn.

I’ll be right back, after I order an authentic Peyton Manning jersey.

Im sure Phil is ok with the fact that he has more SB wins and the most stellar postseason performance (at risk with the way Rodgers plays) in history. and a neck that works.

Phil Simms is actually quite annoying when it comes right down to it. I always hate when he calls the game I’m watching.

Peyton you doth protest too much.
Hit a nerve there Phil. Nice job!

PS – Phil Simms did not pull that comment out of this air. Peyton Manning has long been known as a me first prima donna who has run the show in Indy.

  22. theallegedone says: Nov 3, 2011 2:24 PM

To be honest with you. I don’t necessarily think it would be up to Peyton if the Colts wanted to pick luck. The way the Manning family works, it would probably be up to Archie. And if Luck is picked, Archie would probably demand a trade for his son.

  23. bedmanokc says: Nov 3, 2011 2:24 PM

  36. jbholcom says: Nov 3, 2011 2:38 PM

Peyton, you’re the man! All we hear about is that these internet hacks start all of these rumors. What about former player/current analyst hacks?

Phil, you’re pulling crap out of the air just like an internet hack. I also wish your son could played quarterback half as well as you did. Tennessee might have won a few more games this year.

I bet Chris Simms talks to Peyton a lot more the Phil does. Let’s ask Chris what the deal is because Phil obviously doesn’t know.

  37. thefiesty1 says: Nov 3, 2011 2:41 PM

Phil Simms is more than annoying. Why don’t he talk about how he “persuaded” the Texas AD to start Chrissy over Major Applewhite.

I’m sure he would be knowledgable about that. He doesn’t have a clue about ANYTHING else.

Way to go, Peyton! Put the jerk in his place.

  38. nomoreseasontix says: Nov 3, 2011 2:43 PM

Phil seems to be prone to silly comments designed to get himself attention.
    “Andrew Luck won’t make it”
“Al Davis offered me the head coach job”
“Manning won’t let the Colts draft Luck”

What’s next? Something about a brief, torrid affair with Elvis?

  46. contract says: Nov 3, 2011 2:52 PM

  47. suhisabeast90 says: Nov 3, 2011 2:55 PM

I bet lil’ Eli ends up breaking all Simms records in NY in the end. Dude feels threatened so is trying to get more headlines to detract from the fact he is irrelevant in NY. But still not as big a tool as Namath.

  48. tformation says: Nov 3, 2011 2:57 PM

Has anyone noticed that every team that played on Monday night Football the last 2 years is just great.

I personally think Gruden is still announcing because no one is offering him a job.

  52. musicman495 says: Nov 3, 2011 3:04 PM

This is referred to in the journalism trade as a “non-denial denial.” I am sure Phil Simms is weeping over criticism of his ratings, but that does not change the merit of what he is saying. Assuming Manning is healthy, check out the history with his brother Eli “I Will Never Play for the Chargers” Manning, and tell me honestly you think Peyton will sit still while the Colts use the No. 1 No.1 on a QB he thinks should not play for five years in Indy.

  58. fmwarner says: Nov 3, 2011 3:20 PM

The idea that Manning “won’t let” the Colts draft Luck is logically absurd. If the Colts have decided that they want to draft Luck, it also means that the Colts have decided that they don’t need Manning anymore. And if they don’t need Manning anymore, why do they need to keep him happy by kowtowing to his demands?

Phil Simms is the second most annoying talking head in the football world. Even he can’t top Deion.

  59. vanmorrissey says: Nov 3, 2011 3:22 PM

Inside the NFL has jumped the shark. Virtually no highlights with a bunch of clowns and big mouth Sapp, unwatchable anymore. Useless.

  60. j0esixpack says: Nov 3, 2011 3:24 PM

I guess we can also assume Peyton doesn’t read PFT either?

Nor does he think a lot of people read PFT – otherwise he’d have heard of this.

(Seriously, I’m a Patriots fan and I actually like Peyton (his SNL United Way spoof won me over)
    – but that type of passive aggressive slam doesn’t make him look too good, even if Simms shouldn’t have made the comment in the first place.)

    Simms family is incredibly overrated.

Phil- has a ring, but sucks as an analyst.

Chris- passes were always batted down at the line of scrimmage. Atleast his rolling papers for his joints is his old playbook.

Matt- Plays at Tennessee and he’s probably the worst QB in the SEC.

I bet Mrs. Simms is nice though.

————————————————–To all you goobers out there, Peyton has the same amount of Super Bowl rings as Phil Simms, 1. Phil was IR during the Giants 2nd Super Bowl win.

  65. rodgerthat says: Nov 3, 2011 3:27 PM

I don’t know what why you are all hating on Phil! As an announcer for the games he is pretty close to my favorite! As soon as I hear him my Sunday afternoon nap kicks in. Its better than listening to the sound of water rustling down a mountain stream, or a double shot of Ambien.. :)

  66. melikefootball says: Nov 3, 2011 3:28 PM

  68. xxwhodatxx says: Nov 3, 2011 3:29 PM

Inside the NFL is a pretty good show. Phil Simms is a stick in the mud but the show itself is entertaining.

  69. bigjdve says: Nov 3, 2011 3:31 PM

If Manning is on the team, I don’t believe that they draft Luck with or without Peyton’s blessing. How could they pay Peyton and Luck at the same time and still have a team on the field?

I understand Analysts and Commentators are supposed to do those things, however isn’t it a prerequisite that they at least do some research before they talk?

Phil has 2 rings because he rode on the back of Jeff Hostetler to the 2nd SB. Didn’t he miss something like the last 3- 5 games and the playoffs to just come in and play in the SB? Must be nice to take 1/2 the season off and still get a ring.

  70. pskotte says: Nov 3, 2011 3:32 PM

Taken to the woodshed and spanked.

  71. bullcharger says: Nov 3, 2011 3:34 PM

There’s nothing wrong with Simms. The guy is the number one color commentator for CBS. His opinion isn’t “rediculous”. Why would Manning endorse Andrew Luck being drafted? He will certainly try not to “let” them draft Luck. I am sure Manning wants an elite offensive weapon instead that can help him possibly win another Superbowl. If the colts get Luck, they will probably get rid of Manning soon. How does that help him?

Also, Simms’ other opinions on Luck are refreshing. When Manning was drafted, people were 50/50 on whether Leaf was better than him. We all know what happened there. Nobody knows what they will have in Luck until he plays and his chances of being then next Manning or Brady are very low, as these are once in a generation kind of players. Luck is way overhyped at the moment.

  76. dryzzt23 says: Nov 3, 2011 4:04 PM

Simms is simply jealous of how revered Peyton Manning is compared to himself. Simms was a mediocre Qb who had a couple good years and 1 really good Super Bowl game.

He wishes he had a tenth of Mannings talent and work ethic, and a tenth of Mannings latest contract.

  77. claydefayette says: Nov 3, 2011 4:10 PM

  79. wikidpissah says: Nov 3, 2011 4:20 PM

I’m no Manning fan, but Simms was way out of line. The fact that he contacted Manning to apologize proves that he had no basis for the statement, other than to generate a little controversy. Not to mention an inflated sense of self importance.

    Great response by Manning.

  80. dlindstedt2 says: Nov 3, 2011 4:28 PM

Peyton took all the 1st team practice snaps and pretty much all the game day snaps so the back up QBs had very close to zero experience, even in blowouts. Now his backup is woefully unprepared.

IF the Colts were to draft Luck, Peyton better not turn into another Brett Favre in letting his gigantic ego come in the way of mentoring the QB of the future.

As it has turned out, Peyton Manning is one of the MOST OVER-RATED QB’S IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME !!!
At the end of the day, he only has 1 ring !!!!

With all of his 15 minutes at the line playcalls and other irrelevant antics at the line….with all the rant about him over his career, one would think he had multiple rings ( ex: Roethlisburger – 2, Aikman – 3, Bradshaw – 4, Staubach – 2, Montana- 4 etc. ).

This guy’s days are long behind him. He has always had happy feet and too nervous to be in the pocket. I don’t think he will ever take another snap.

The Colts organization is tanking the season to get Luck, to replace Peyton. This story is an attempt to refute what every semi-educated person already knows !

….but just to correct progree2011….Manning has one ring because of his defense. Manning’s passing stats were terrible that playoff run. The defense rose up….going from one of the worst defenses in the league during regular season to the BEST defense in the playoffs….that is why they won the SB….not because of all the INTs he threw.

That Boomeranged on him. At first I though it was cool of him to be a stand up guy and let Manning know, but I couldn’t shake the idea that this was on national TV and he’s presuming what Manning is thinking.

If there is not enough to talk about in the NFL, perhaps there should be fewer media figures.

Phil was only voicing what alot of other people
have said and thought about the situation
    with the Colts.

All you “haters” need to crawl away from your
computers and get out in the world again.

Peyton may go down as one of the all time best regular season QB’s…he may also go down as one of the all time worst playoff QB’s.
