Peyton Manning takes a shot at Phil Simms

Reuters

Well, the flesh may be weak, but the spirit still has a perpetually impatient look on its face.

The decision of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to show up unannounced and meet with the media included a comment about the recent ridiculous remarks from Phil Simms of CBS and Showtime that Manning won’t “let” the Colts draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.

“I don’t talk to Phil,” Manning said, via Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star.  “Phil doesn’t talk to me.  He did text me after that, saying ‘Hey, sorry to drag your name into this.’  I wrote back, ‘Phil I don’t know what you’re talking about.’  He said, ‘Well on my show, Inside the NFL, I made this statement.’  I said, ‘Phil, I hate to break it to you, but I don’t watch your show, along with a lot of other people that I don’t think watch that show.’  Giving himself a little more credit than probably was merited.”

Damn.

I’ll be right back, after I order an authentic Peyton Manning jersey.

  1. I think this is my favorite comment ever made by a Manning…and that includes Peytons, “liquored up kicker” shot a Vanderject!

  2. Im sure Phil is ok with the fact that he has more SB wins and the most stellar postseason performance (at risk with the way Rodgers plays) in history. and a neck that works.

  3. Peyton you doth protest too much.
Hit a nerve there Phil. Nice job!

PS – Phil Simms did not pull that comment out of this air. Peyton Manning has long been known as a me first prima donna who has run the show in Indy.

  4. well does he watch PTI? Cause if he does the theory thrown out there yesterday (or maybe the day before) was that Phil and Peyton were friends and this stuff either came from Peyton or Phil was trying to protect him.

THIS is the theory I like.

  5. HAHA tune in next week for Phil “Irsay has offered me the head coaching gig in Indy, but of course I turned it down” Nice way for Manning to put him in his place. I knew there was a reason I like the guy

  6. To be honest with you. I don’t necessarily think it would be up to Peyton if the Colts wanted to pick luck. The way the Manning family works, it would probably be up to Archie. And if Luck is picked, Archie would probably demand a trade for his son.

  7. Great comment by Manning – like most Americans, I have not watched Inside the NFL this year. I think the last time I tuned in was when Len Dawson was still one of the hosts.

  8. I’m not sure Payton Should come back even if he heals. He’s one hard hit closer to a wheel chair. It just may not be worth the risk at all. I like the guy… I like the guy better upright and walking.

  9. Peyton Manning is the man.

You gotta love how he stuck it to one of the worst NFL “analysts” Phil Simms is absolutely horrendous on his CBS broadcasts.

Touche!! Lots of folks here in the Boston area think Simms source WAS Archie.

  11. What Peyton left out was the Sports Media latched on to it like Parasites and turned a non-story into a story for pretty much no reason at all. They have a funny way of doing that on an almost daily basis.

  12. Peyton, you’re the man! All we hear about is that these internet hacks start all of these rumors. What about former player/current analyst hacks?

Phil, you’re pulling crap out of the air just like an internet hack. I also wish your son could played quarterback half as well as you did. Tennessee might have won a few more games this year.

I bet Chris Simms talks to Peyton a lot more the Phil does. Let’s ask Chris what the deal is because Phil obviously doesn’t know.

  13. Phil Simms is more than annoying. Why don’t he talk about how he “persuaded” the Texas AD to start Chrissy over Major Applewhite.

I’m sure he would be knowledgable about that. He doesn’t have a clue about ANYTHING else.

Way to go, Peyton! Put the jerk in his place.

  14. Phil seems to be prone to silly comments designed to get himself attention.
    “Andrew Luck won’t make it”
“Al Davis offered me the head coach job”
“Manning won’t let the Colts draft Luck”

What’s next? Something about a brief, torrid affair with Elvis?

The guy is an idiot. He should stick to sucking as an announcer.

  15. Peyton Manning for MVP!!!! I don’t care if he doesn’t play a snap all year, he should get it for this statement alone.

Peyton “advised” Luck last year to stay in school. I guess karma is a…

    ______________________________

huh? He advised him to do so because he did so himself, and it worked well for him. Nothing less. Nothing more. Karma has nothing to do with it.

  17. Maybe if Peyton watched his show, he’d learn how to be a clutch postseason QB like Phil Simms … instead of the choking dog he is.

  18. I bet lil’ Eli ends up breaking all Simms records in NY in the end. Dude feels threatened so is trying to get more headlines to detract from the fact he is irrelevant in NY. But still not as big a tool as Namath.

  19. The only way that quote would have been better would be something like:

“Phil, I hate to break it to you, but I am more of a QB with a broken neck than your son ever was or will be.”

  20. Phil and Cris Carter must be drinking from the same cup.

Both these clowns spew nothing but crap.

I think Gruden is the guy mixing the stuff for them to drink.

Has anyone noticed that every team that played on Monday night Football the last 2 years is just great.

I personally think Gruden is still announcing because no one is offering him a job.

  21. NFL celebs sure text each other a lot. I guess it gives them something to tell the media, like what the other person’s text said. What is this, junior high?

  22. This is referred to in the journalism trade as a “non-denial denial.” I am sure Phil Simms is weeping over criticism of his ratings, but that does not change the merit of what he is saying. Assuming Manning is healthy, check out the history with his brother Eli “I Will Never Play for the Chargers” Manning, and tell me honestly you think Peyton will sit still while the Colts use the No. 1 No.1 on a QB he thinks should not play for five years in Indy.

  23. I stopped watching after calling the Steelers old, slow and done after one game. Peyton’s comment was priceless

  24. The idea that Manning “won’t let” the Colts draft Luck is logically absurd. If the Colts have decided that they want to draft Luck, it also means that the Colts have decided that they don’t need Manning anymore. And if they don’t need Manning anymore, why do they need to keep him happy by kowtowing to his demands?

Phil Simms is the second most annoying talking head in the football world. Even he can’t top Deion.

  25. I guess we can also assume Peyton doesn’t read PFT either?

Nor does he think a lot of people read PFT – otherwise he’d have heard of this.

(Seriously, I’m a Patriots fan and I actually like Peyton (his SNL United Way spoof won me over)
    – but that type of passive aggressive slam doesn’t make him look too good, even if Simms shouldn’t have made the comment in the first place.)

  26. Simms family is incredibly overrated.

Phil- has a ring, but sucks as an analyst.

Chris- passes were always batted down at the line of scrimmage. Atleast his rolling papers for his joints is his old playbook.

Matt- Plays at Tennessee and he’s probably the worst QB in the SEC.

I bet Mrs. Simms is nice though.

————————————————–To all you goobers out there, Peyton has the same amount of Super Bowl rings as Phil Simms, 1. Phil was IR during the Giants 2nd Super Bowl win.

  28. I don’t know what why you are all hating on Phil! As an announcer for the games he is pretty close to my favorite! As soon as I hear him my Sunday afternoon nap kicks in. Its better than listening to the sound of water rustling down a mountain stream, or a double shot of Ambien.. 🙂

  29. Simms is so full of himself and how nice it was to hear he was put in his place, to bad CBS and Inside he NFL, don’t follow up with putting him on the street.

  30. If Manning is on the team, I don’t believe that they draft Luck with or without Peyton’s blessing. How could they pay Peyton and Luck at the same time and still have a team on the field?

I understand Analysts and Commentators are supposed to do those things, however isn’t it a prerequisite that they at least do some research before they talk?

Phil has 2 rings because he rode on the back of Jeff Hostetler to the 2nd SB. Didn’t he miss something like the last 3- 5 games and the playoffs to just come in and play in the SB? Must be nice to take 1/2 the season off and still get a ring.

  31. There’s nothing wrong with Simms. The guy is the number one color commentator for CBS. His opinion isn’t “rediculous”. Why would Manning endorse Andrew Luck being drafted? He will certainly try not to “let” them draft Luck. I am sure Manning wants an elite offensive weapon instead that can help him possibly win another Superbowl. If the colts get Luck, they will probably get rid of Manning soon. How does that help him?

Also, Simms’ other opinions on Luck are refreshing. When Manning was drafted, people were 50/50 on whether Leaf was better than him. We all know what happened there. Nobody knows what they will have in Luck until he plays and his chances of being then next Manning or Brady are very low, as these are once in a generation kind of players. Luck is way overhyped at the moment.

  32. Simms is simply jealous of how revered Peyton Manning is compared to himself. Simms was a mediocre Qb who had a couple good years and 1 really good Super Bowl game.

He wishes he had a tenth of Mannings talent and work ethic, and a tenth of Mannings latest contract.

  33. I’m no Manning fan, but Simms was way out of line. The fact that he contacted Manning to apologize proves that he had no basis for the statement, other than to generate a little controversy. Not to mention an inflated sense of self importance.

    Great response by Manning.

  34. Peyton in that picture even has the face I can see him saying that in…

That would be the Peyton “shut the hell up when I am talking to you” Manning Face.

And comparing Peyton to Simms is just wrong. Simms won Super Bowls, fine, but Peyton is the better athlete/QB.

  35. I only pray that Simms talks himself out of his analyst spot on CBS. Nobody makes my ears bleed like he does.

Here’s a fun game for the whole family on Sunday. Watch the national CBS broadcast, and count the number of times Phil Simms says something insightful. (no…”he’s SO BIG” and “he’s SO FAST” are not insightful)

  36. Notice how Manning doesn’t deny it but just insults Simms. The Colts have really shot themselves in the foot by giving Peyton too much power. Peyton took all the 1st team practice snaps and pretty much all the game day snaps so the back up QBs had very close to zero experience, even in blowouts. Now his backup is woefully unprepared.

IF the Colts were to draft Luck, Peyton better not turn into another Brett Favre in letting his gigantic ego come in the way of mentoring the QB of the future.

  37. One thing about Peyton Manning – dude always makes his quotes funny. He was funny on SNL, his commercials are funny and I loved the Idiot Kicker rant on Vanderjagt.

  38. I feel you Peyton. As much as I love football, I can barely stomach that show. JB is great, but Simms, Collinsworth and Sapp really suck!! The show was much better on HBO with Len Dawson.

  39. Ok I’ve admittedly never really been a huge Peyton fan. I still hate the Colts, and not for the reason most of you would assume, but after this I love Peyton. I didn’t even know Phil Simms had a show hahaha

I couldn’t possibly agree more. The myth of Manning’s “class” is up there with the myth of McNabb’s. It’s petty and childish, what he said. But that’s him to a T.

  41. Never a big Simms fan but its amazing how many folks on here are commenting on him and never saw him play. He may not of put up the numbers that Peyton has but he is something Peyton never was… CLUTCH

  42. Well, Phil Simms is just a liiiiiitle too proud of himself sometimes. Nice to see him knocked down a peg. LOL

  43. As a Favre fan, and with so many Favre haters here it is awesome that the torch has been passed along to Manning. This is hilarious when it comes to being the new “diva” or whatever you want to call it. Let’s all jump on the hate Manning band wagon now.

  44. So…. Phil Simms, Super Bowl MVP, two time SB winner and one of the toughest QBs in league history, is “ridiculous” for voicing an opinion about a college QB, but some lawyer with a website can make a video saying he’s gonna lobby his buddy Peter King to vote no on Bill Parcells enshrinement into the HOF… Funny stuff Mikey.

  45. i like phil the player but please he won one super bowl and did not play in the other. Hoss won the bills/giants game. payton has nothing to be jealous of. besides wasn’t phil always hurt??

  46. Big deal. I see Peyton is still good at what he does best: manipulating the rank and file public.

    Sheeple: boom roasted.

    ===============================

So what? Bernard Berrian was the #1 WR for the Vikings.

Simms’ opinions can definitely still be ridiculous despite his position.

  48. As it has turned out, Peyton Manning is one of the MOST OVER-RATED QB’S IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME !!!
At the end of the day, he only has 1 ring !!!!

With all of his 15 minutes at the line playcalls and other irrelevant antics at the line….with all the rant about him over his career, one would think he had multiple rings ( ex: Roethlisburger – 2, Aikman – 3, Bradshaw – 4, Staubach – 2, Montana- 4 etc. ).

This guy’s days are long behind him. He has always had happy feet and too nervous to be in the pocket. I don’t think he will ever take another snap.

The Colts organization is tanking the season to get Luck, to replace Peyton. This story is an attempt to refute what every semi-educated person already knows !

  49. typical disgruntled comment from someone who is never going to play again……..get used to it Manning cause soon, nobody is going to care about anything YOU say!………and just confirms Manning is one of the biggest douches in the league!

  50. ….but just to correct progree2011….Manning has one ring because of his defense. Manning’s passing stats were terrible that playoff run. The defense rose up….going from one of the worst defenses in the league during regular season to the BEST defense in the playoffs….that is why they won the SB….not because of all the INTs he threw.

  51. That Boomeranged on him. At first I though it was cool of him to be a stand up guy and let Manning know, but I couldn’t shake the idea that this was on national TV and he’s presuming what Manning is thinking.

If there is not enough to talk about in the NFL, perhaps there should be fewer media figures.

  52. Phil was only voicing what alot of other people
have said and thought about the situation
    with the Colts.

All you “haters” need to crawl away from your
computers and get out in the world again.

  53. Simms has one SuperBowl and check the numbers…he wasnt clutch but his defense was…Quit hating on the greatest Qb of all time…2011 season is proof
