Philip Rivers says the lip readers are wrong

Philip Rivers, Wallace Gilberry AP

Moments after The Phumble, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was seen mouthing the words “Worst day ever” on the sideline.

Rivers said that the lip readers got it all wrong.

“I didn’t say that. I don’t know if I ever said that. It wasn’t the worst day ever. It may have been the worst play I’ve ever been a part of, but it wasn’t the worst day,” Rivers said via the Associated Press.

The AP adds a level of intrigue to the question of whether Rivers is playing hurt this year. They note that he took a number of big shots against the Patriots in Week Two, and suggest Rivers could have a chest injury.  That would help to explain his accuracy problems.

Nine Chargers didn’t practice Wednesday, including four offensive starters.  The lack of practice time isn’t helping the Chargers offense, but they actually had more injury problems last year.  And that didn’t slow down Rivers.

Haha this is to funny. He clearly said it. Why is he denying it who cares. He’s just making himself look worse by lying

  2. trbowman says: Nov 3, 2011 10:43 AM

EVERYONE knows that’s what he said.

Not even any shame in it so I don’t know what the denial is about.

  3. glac1 says: Nov 3, 2011 10:44 AM

Although it was a “JV” play on his part Monday, Rivers is a class act that doesn’t have the “playmakers” on offense like he used to have. As a Packer fan, he scares me this Sunday against our defense. I think he’ll redeem himself.

  4. souldogdave says: Nov 3, 2011 10:46 AM

Please. He said it clearly. Then he denied and then waffled BY YOUR OWN ACCOUNT.”I don’t know if I ever said that.” Non-article.

  5. joetoronto says: Nov 3, 2011 10:49 AM

That was clearly what he said, and it’s no big deal, so why doesn’t he just admit it?

Anyway, something’s wrong with him, just look at his passes. Even when the ball IS accurate, it’s not tight at all.

  6. buflo66 says: Nov 3, 2011 10:49 AM

Rivers said, “That is so weird. That is the weirdest thing ever.”

Tirico is usually a good lip reader (not as good as Al Michaels) but watched it in slow motion and got it wrong.

Earlier in live coverage cameras caught him saying the sentence above.

You can see the ball jammed his left ring finger as it turned white immediately.

  7. sophiethegreatdane says: Nov 3, 2011 10:52 AM

Uh…yes you did. Clear as a bell on the video.

  8. steelerdynasty2010 says: Nov 3, 2011 10:52 AM

clearly said “that was the worst THING ever”

  9. tshirttom says: Nov 3, 2011 10:52 AM

He needs to step it up bigtime and upset the Pack

  10. dubaradhandi says: Nov 3, 2011 10:54 AM

Wow did pats hit him? Where is that defense when we needed last week?

  11. captainwisdom8888 says: Nov 3, 2011 10:56 AM

I would hate to be the camera man enlisted with simply filming players on the sidelines searching for lipreader nation’s next victim…

    HI MOM!

  12. descendency says: Nov 3, 2011 10:59 AM

    I saw “Worst Play Ever”

  13. mvp43 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:02 AM

    “Worst day ever”

He was just preparing what to say after the Packers leave town on Sunday!

  14. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Nov 3, 2011 11:02 AM

Buflo66, he clearly mouthed only one syllable, whether the four letter network only showed part of the statement or not. Whether it was worst day ever or worst thing ever or whatever, is this really an issue?

  15. brintfatre says: Nov 3, 2011 11:03 AM

Would y’all rather him have been happy and joking on the sidelines? If he did say “worst day ever” why would that be a controversy???

  16. JackLeone says: Nov 3, 2011 11:06 AM

@steelerdynasty2010 thank you. when the camera showed him that’s what he said. I don’t know how they got ‘worst day ever’

  17. ern215 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:09 AM

    Who cares????

  18. packfaninchitown says: Nov 3, 2011 11:14 AM

Sunday’s not gonna be too fun either… :)

  19. jutts says: Nov 3, 2011 11:22 AM

    Rivers, Turner, enough said…..

  20. orbearider66 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:25 AM

I’m sorry but did I just slip into a parallel universe where someone actually believes that Rivers is a “class act”? Unless that term has been redefined to mean “complete and total d-bag (apparently spelling it out gets your comment deleted)”, I don’t think it is possible for someone to be more wrong.

  21. thetooloftools says: Nov 3, 2011 11:25 AM

What he was mouthing was “I’m an overpaid choker”.

  22. radrntn says: Nov 3, 2011 11:26 AM

    Go Packers!

  23. steelerchicken says: Nov 3, 2011 11:26 AM

I went from a push to a loss!!! Although he did helped me win my Fantasy Championship last year.

  24. theysone says: Nov 3, 2011 11:28 AM

Next he’s going to claim someone “hacked” his mouth.

That’s what they all claim when they say something idiotic on Twitter…

  25. medtxpack says: Nov 3, 2011 11:29 AM

Chargers are in for a beat down with the Packers coming in next week. theyve never lost in San Diego; and coming off a bye. EEEEK! Someone will need to toughen up for this…

  26. sj39 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:33 AM

He is not that good. That would help to explain his accuracy problems.

  27. wtfru2 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:34 AM

I know exactly what he said…… I need a new coach that has a clue.

  28. CKL says: Nov 3, 2011 11:35 AM

I think he decried lip readers’ interpretation when he was taunting Cutler from the sidelines years ago as well. We thought he said “WHAT A BABY” he said “THAT A BABY” or something. Can’t quite recall.
I can’t remember ever seeing 2 QBs who openly hated each other more. it was pretty entertaining, actually.

  29. mrgroovesd says: Nov 3, 2011 11:35 AM

It can be both ways…”Day” or “Play” or even “thing” but it’s over with so let’s just let it go. Who cares what he said, why is it even an article?

  30. damnyoulinelliot says: Nov 3, 2011 11:42 AM

Funny… it’s Thursday and the Bolts are still dwelling on a Monday Night game. They deserved it.

KC is the only team who can expose the frauds we call the Chargers.

    CHIEFS!

  31. vanmorrissey says: Nov 3, 2011 11:44 AM

Thanks Gregg, more injuries last year so we don’t want the excuses this week. Bye week against Jets, what was that excuse? Crummy against the Chiefs, what was the excuse there? Quit the gum flapping Rivers, and play like last year when you had the injury and hold out issues as excuses and performed at a Pro Bowl level. Green Bay had more injuries last year and won it all. Put up or shut up against standing World champs this week, let’s see if this soft team can hold up with the upcoming schedule vs. GB, Oak town 2x, Balt, Chicago, Buffalo, Detroit.

  32. drshakedown74 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:44 AM

Phillip Rivers needs to stop yelling at his teammates……………….every week, gets old. He reminds me of a 3rd grader.

  33. freakish213 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:50 AM

The main reason the Chargers have been slowed down, especially in the red zone, is the loss of Darren Sproles. That is all.

  34. buflo66 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:50 AM

    myopinionisrighterthanyours –

go say weirdest and worst in the mirror…

it is hard to tell in the slow-mo shot that Tirico commented on..it is plain as day when you see the live shot of him saying the whole sentence…

Tirico put those words into his mouth, if he would have seen Rivers say the whole sentence it is obvious..

Rivers said, “That is so weird. That is the weirdest thing ever.”

  35. nzyme says: Nov 3, 2011 11:52 AM

History shows he’s a good QB. He’s gotta be hurt.

  36. boiler72 says: Nov 3, 2011 11:56 AM

Being someone who is hearing-impaired, I read his lips perfectly and what he said is “worst night ever”. You know, it was night time and all.

  37. sojumaster says: Nov 3, 2011 12:22 PM

This is stupid!! So what ?!!??!

Has the press gotten so obsessive and invasive that they now use a lip reader to find quotes to put in a news article???? We already have the players mic’ed up in the field of play, mandatory press conferences, cameras in the locker room, cameras in the pre-game huddles. Where does it stop? What’s next? Mics in the bathrooms? The President of the USA does not even receive this much scrutiny.

  38. faithfullyethopeless says: Nov 3, 2011 12:22 PM

lip reading is almost impossible to get correct, i took sign language and numerous deaf people attest that most sounds are made in the back of the mouth so its almost impossible to tell what is what, and the ones that are made at the front are so similar that its hard to get those right. like m, n, and b all look the same

  39. superschrec says: Nov 3, 2011 12:24 PM

    Big Ben – 2 rings
    Rivers – 0
    Eli Manning – 1
because all you losers are going to talk…NUMBERS dont lie, and QBs are judged by Super Bowls.

  40. superschrec says: Nov 3, 2011 12:24 PM

Phillip Rivers is the most over rated QB just ahead of Eli Manning. Ironically they were the 2 that were traded in that draft.
Rivers cant win a meaningful game. Has a terrible playoff track record, (when games count) and now excuses need made because hes having a bad year. He was never an elite QB unless you talk to the idiot fantasy football people that worship him.
Ill take Big Ben over Rivers any day any time against any team at any stadium.

  41. yevrag3535 says: Nov 3, 2011 12:30 PM

    Choker on a dead team…..

  42. vanmorrissey says: Nov 3, 2011 12:32 PM

Thank you, boiler72, that was my next suggestion. Someone out there who can read lips would definitely have been able to determine what he said.

  43. alewatcher says: Nov 3, 2011 12:38 PM

    ——————-

“Good QB” in this instance = regular season stat monster that comes up small when it counts.

  44. slickster35 says: Nov 3, 2011 1:05 PM

Thats two starting RBs dragged off the field while playing the Chiefs D.

I thought the faiders were supposed to be the bullies?

  45. 707Raiders707 says: Nov 3, 2011 1:06 PM

love how they are making excuses for his bad play awww he’s injured it’s the only way he is playing like crap what a load of bull

  46. nflofficeadmin says: Nov 3, 2011 1:14 PM

I thought he said, “We Buy Gold”!

  47. kmooresd85 says: Nov 3, 2011 1:44 PM

either way, he has been struggling but I think he’ll come around this week. It seems like the Chargers only come to play when the competition is good. It’s been that way ever since Rivers took over. He’ll lose to the Chiefs but then come back and beat the Packers. Very Charger-esque

  48. radrhatr says: Nov 3, 2011 2:08 PM

Look at the bright side Philip. Nobody in San Diego saw what you said. The Chargers have no fans.

  49. sd4life says: Nov 3, 2011 2:26 PM

I think the Chargers knocked down the colts in their quest to be unbeaten back in 2005! Perhaps history will repeat this year. I think 2005 was also the year we missed the playoffs!

Impossible to get correct? Deaf people can attest to this? What the hell are you talking about?

That looks in no way like he is saying a work with a P in it.

Vindication for me, and my post on this on the original MNF thread.
