As to him having “success” with the Jets it’s because of their great coverage down field. Two of his sacks are on extended plays. Although it is entertaining watching him fly backwards most plays from contact. He’ll be invisible tomorrow.

Not only being cut was a humbling experience, but going to another team w/o first round expectations can be huge for players. Aaron Curry left Seattle and the expectations bestowed upon a 4th overall pick and now has the expectations of a 7th round pick one year and a 5th the next. Maybin’s expectations are no different than anyone signed off of the unsigned free agent heap compared to a high first round pick. Curry was the definition of bust too and has shown in Oakland he’s no bust and if he keeps improving could become a steal.

Buffalo and Seattle fans will be quick to point out all the faults of Curry and Maybin, but that’s because of pure hate for their teams missing on high draft picks. Change can do players good. Another player not previously mentioned, DE Jarvis Moss a 1st round pick for Denver who is doing very well for Oakland the past few games.

If anybody is interested (which I highly doubt) Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News did an excellent piece on Maybin. It’s well worth the read if you’re not a blinded homer and can appreciate a good story.

It was an excellent article. It let you see the personal side of the man, and what he has been through, and what being cut and then signed by the Jets made him realize. And as one other poster commented, I don’t think we will be seeing Maybin on the police blotters anytime soon.

Exactly. He’s only on the field for passing situations, and he’s producing in a spot where the Jets needed any talent they could get desperately. I’ll take 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in 4 games from a situational guy anyday. If you know his story it’s hard not to root for the guy if he’s playing for your team and to top it off all this is coming at the expense of Buffalo. He’s not a world beater, he’s just been a pleasant surprise.

Even assuming that’s true, so what? There are loads of players, some of them highly paid, who excel in specialty roles. Should the Bears have cut Devin Hester because he couldn’t play cornerback? This is a pressure-based league, and if Maybin can get even as few as 6-8 sacks playing only 10-12 snaps a game on obvious passing downs, that’s worth a lot.

Besides, before last week’s explosion against a decimated Redskins team, the Bills had four sacks as a team. FOUR SACKS IN SIX GAMES. In other words, they had no pass rush whatsoever. Am I supposed to believe that they couldn’t have used Maybin’s pressure in a third-down role?

Not really. Same thing happened with Ziggy Hood. The Steelers would only let him on the field for a few plays each game his first year and a half, and he never had a sack, and he was being considered a draft bust. But, once he got a starting job due to injuries late last year, he has produced 6.5 sacks, including 2 big ones in the playoffs last year. Besides that, the Steelers have been better against the run with him as a starter.

Sometimes you have to let the young D-linemen play a few entire games and allow them to get into the flow of the game before you find out what they are made of.

When this guy is actually on the field for more than a few plays, and actually has to work up a sweat, the “wheels” go away. He’s fresh legs only…
I guess he’s a little project of Rex’s so the league knows what a genius Rex is, until the time comes when he can’t afford the luxury and needs football players who can hang with the opposition for more than a couple plays..

Aaron Curry has filled a big role on the Raiders defense. If you talk to any Seahawks fan they’ll tell you Curry was an absolute bust and say you are full of it if you say Curry is playing good.

Maybin’s another player who is being used correctly. Some players are “square” and can’t be placed into “round” holes. They have to be used correctly or they won’t play well. Rex is using Maybin correctly. Chuck Bresnahan is using Curry correctly and it shows.

Now I look forward to Curry using his speed to stop Tebow from bootlegging it as he’s done an excellent job of setting the edge by not allowing RB’s to run outside the tackle on the weakside. I hope Maybin does well against Buffalo too.

I watch him at Buffalo training camp and for 2 yrs straight he was tossed around liek a rag doll by Ed Wang and other Buffalo O-Line back-ups… guys that arent even on the team anymore.

Mark Anderson has 3 sacks for the Pats this year in the same situational role. I wouldn’t say he’s a star now either, he just does his job.

Not to downplay the Jets’ coaching staff: they certainly get more out of their defensive players than my Bills. But it’s not as though Maybin is suddenly a stud after exiting Buffalo. Outside of his own mind, of course.
