Rob Ryan thinks he’s the best defensive coordinator in the NFL

Rob Ryan, Keith Brooking, Bradie James, Anthony Spencer, DeMarcus Ware AP

In case you needed to be reminded, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan isn’t afraid to speak highly of himself.

Ryan may have been chastened for a day or two after the Cowboys’ embarrassing defensive performance against the Eagles on Sunday night, but by Friday he was back to bragging about his abilities, saying he thinks he’s the best in the NFL at his job, no matter how his defense looked against the Eagles.

“I take a lot of pride in my job,” Ryan said, via the Star-Telegram. “I’m the best at what I do. Every once in a while you throw a dud out there. You can’t be great if you can’t come back from one bad game.”

Ryan did acknowledge that he never should have called the Eagles the “all-hype team,” and that he needlessly gave Philadelphia some extra motivation.

“I put too much pressure on our guys, which is not what we want to do,” Ryan said. “That’s why I felt the whole thing was my fault, which it really was. It doesn’t happen very often. It’s not going to be a weekly press conference where I screw something up.”

So Ryan says he’s done talking bad about the opposition. But he’s not done talking up himself.

How does this guy have a job? He hasn’t proven anything over his entire career.

  2. mad55555 says: Nov 5, 2011 5:17 PM

None of the cowboy players seem to be able to play under pressure when it counts.

  3. flipadelphia says: Nov 5, 2011 5:17 PM

Another worthless quote from a delusional Ryan brother. These guys are brilliant…

  4. smcgaels1997 says: Nov 5, 2011 5:19 PM

Seriously?!? I think the DC’s in Green Bat, Baltimore, SF and Pittsburgh might say otherwise, but are too classy to talk about it.

Wtf is wrong with these two guys? Does stupidity just run rampant in that family? Wtf will it take to get them to shut up?

The Cowboys rank 9th in total defense, Rob. Get a grip.

  10. urfinished says: Nov 5, 2011 5:23 PM

This story was taken out of context.
He said, “I’m the best at what I do.”
What the story fails to report is that he was standing over a McRib sandwich at the time…okay 3 McRib sandwiches. And those McRib sandwiches were gone in 5.8 seconds.
I challenge anyone that thinks they can beat that time.

  11. texansfan54 says: Nov 5, 2011 5:24 PM

This guy probably looks in the mirror every morning and says “lookin’ good, Rob.” They need to do an “alternate” reality show based on the Ryan family. What a bunch of clowns.

  18. ravensfan4life52 says: Nov 5, 2011 5:29 PM

Either Chuck Pagano or LeBeau since they won’t let me say his first name on here.

  20. cliffordc05 says: Nov 5, 2011 5:32 PM

Oh yeah this guy is the best defensive coordinator in the league. Michael Vick was totally confused by the defensive coverage last week. His biggest problem was probably trying to figure out where the Cowboy safeties were. They certainly were not over the middle of the field. If Ryan takes pride in that game plan then he is a bigger fool than I thought. He is a bigger gasbag than his brother.

  21. pack15forever says: Nov 5, 2011 5:35 PM

What gives with the Ryan brothers, Rex and Rob? They have two be the BIGGEST idiots to have ever adorn an NFL sideline. If you are good at what you do you do not have to constantly tell the world just how great you are. The world will already know it.

  22. jdandcoke says: Nov 5, 2011 5:35 PM

this just proves something that a lot of fans seem to think is a falsehood is actually true: teams DO get extra motivated by trash talk.

ive heard a lot of fans, who obviously never played competitive sports, say “well, if a player needs trash-talk to play hard, then he shouldnt be playing”. that sentiment is total BS….players most definately tend to play with extra motivation when a player/coach from another team is abusing them in the press; its himan nature.

why do you think belichick….who despite what many people think, is a very, VERY, good coach….strictly FORBIDS any of his players from trash talking? answer: he doesnt want to give the opposing team ANY edge whatsoever.

  23. sportsinhd says: Nov 5, 2011 5:37 PM

He did a great job in Cleveland, he hasn’t done much in Dallas. Dude needs to shut up until he wins something. At least Rex has been to a couple of conference championship games.

  28. dawsonleery says: Nov 5, 2011 5:49 PM

  32. arkadyrenko says: Nov 5, 2011 6:06 PM

Rob Ryan, why are you talking? After the beatdown the Eagles put on you, you should have no time to talk to the media. All your time should be spent preparing not to get your ass handed to you by whoever the Cowboys are playing next.

    sincerely,

  41. tunescribe says: Nov 5, 2011 6:22 PM

Here’s the thing about the Ryans: their mouths are always open — eating, talking, or stuffing them with feet, sometimes other people’s but most often their own.

  42. garyln7 says: Nov 5, 2011 6:22 PM

Rob Ryan is a complete idiot.

  46. Patriot42 says: Nov 5, 2011 6:35 PM

  50. nickster31 says: Nov 5, 2011 6:41 PM

  54. bnwillard says: Nov 5, 2011 6:51 PM

I’m not defending this fat tub of goo, but I’ve read the article and the source article twice and nowhere does Ryan say “I’m the best DC in the NFL” he says he’s the best at what he does.. Quite a different thing. Please stop trying to sensationalize these no stories

  55. charlutes says: Nov 5, 2011 6:57 PM

  56. Andre's Johnson says: Nov 5, 2011 7:07 PM

Right now, Wade Phillips and 49ers DC (Manusky?) look great.

Does anyone remember that old picture in the Guiness Book of World Records of the fattest brothers (or maybe twins) alive? It’s two gargantuan lards riding motorcycles.

Rex and Rob are closing in on that monumental feat.

  57. firedup1 says: Nov 5, 2011 7:11 PM

  59. j0esixpack says: Nov 5, 2011 7:16 PM

Between Buddy, Rex and Rob these guys have moved beyond being the punchline of a running joke

They’re more like a combination of Reality TV, Sports, and a Sitcom.

Between Rex posting foot fetish videos of he and his wife on Youtube – THEN asking everyone to respect his privacy, followed by multiple failed Super Bowl “guarantees” – and Rob’s recent comments amounting to him putting his foot in his mouth, they’re all embarrassments to their organizations and their families.

Actually, let me amend that – as far as the average New York fan is concerned, they very much look up to someone of Rex Ryan’s caliber

But for the rest of America, they’d be an embarrassment.

  79. mancave001 says: Nov 5, 2011 8:31 PM

  80. philtration says: Nov 5, 2011 8:36 PM

He beat them down with the Browns D and then followed that up by beating them down with the Cowboys D. I’m not challenging your intelligence here, but at least admit that he’s a pretty decent D coordinator, pretty good “career accomplishment” to me

  83. turk2875 says: Nov 5, 2011 9:09 PM

What’s sad is after he has a good game against Seahawks “Offense”, and I use the work offense loosely, he’ll be back to thinking that his defense is the greatest to step foot on a football field. If a beat-down like that by the Eagles doesn’t shut him up, NOTHING WILL!!!

With Jerrah proclaming everything is fine and that the team will bounce back without a doubt this week, and Ryan talking in his usual grandstanding (isn’t Garrett the coach?) self, a out of the blue Seahawks win will provide countless hours of PFT joy as those two try and backpeddle once again.

Cowboys need to hire Troy Polamalu as their def. coordinator and let Rob go off and do Head & Shoulders commercials.

  110. EJ says: Nov 6, 2011 6:46 AM

A good Defensive Coordinator can take a bunch of no-namers and make them superstars with just his ability to call the right plays at the right time. Rob Ryan doesn’t have that gift, at least not right now. Confidence is great, but being over confident is damaging.

I do have a soft spot for Rob maybe because he was my team’s LB coach for awhile. Maybe it’s why I don’t hate Rex either. Rob sure surprised me with the Shakespeare reference. Good one, Rob!

Dick Lebeu is hands down the best DC. Get a clue Rob.

  114. war71 says: Nov 6, 2011 7:54 AM

Everything Rob Ryan touches turns to crap. He has the anti-midas touch. He has to claims to fame. 1) Buddy Ryans son. 2) LB coach for the Belicheck Patriots…after that each defense he has “coordinated” took step backwards. He’s horrible.

  115. husker0004 says: Nov 6, 2011 7:59 AM

Just like to thank all the Dallas haters for the massive amount of responses again. We’re talking about a defensive coordinator right? This many posts, “brilliant” slams, and comments about a defensive coordinator who wouldn’t have gotten any feedback had he still been in Cleveland? Thanks for keeping Dallas Americas Team. Oh yeah, so Dallas is only 9th in total defense…….where were they before Rob? Close to last and he’s had one bad game as coordinator of the Cowboys with the same players from a year ago. Sorry, I actually posted some football facts and not stupid drivel….my bad.

  116. snarkzilla says: Nov 6, 2011 8:23 AM

The only D stats that really count are points allowed per game and turnovers. For instance, everybody keeps repeating that the Pats are last in D and the Packers are among the worst. But the Pats are 15th in points allowed and the Packers are 9th.

Dallas and Seattle are tied for 18th in points allowed. In total turnovers, Dallas has 12 and Seattle has 10.

    Sorry, Rob. 18th isn’t best and you’re a blowhard.

I’m not defending this fat tub of goo, but I’ve read the article and the source article twice and nowhere does Ryan say “I’m the best DC in the NFL” he says he’s the best at what he does..

    —————————————

Hey ratboy, what is that that he does? Because the last I checked, he was the DC – let me say that again, DC – for my team…

You can do the logic right? Here is a hint – Google “conditional programming” and look for “if” which will be followed by “then”…

“Quite a different thing” …….. REALLY???

He says he’s “the best at what I do”.

What he “does” is an NFL Defensive Coordinator.

Forgive the rest of us morons for concluding that he’s saying he’s the best NFL Defensive Coordinator.

Get out of the basement and get a clue, jacka$$.

I’ll bet he never passed a mirror he didn’t love.
Probably called out his own name when passionate with his spouse.

He and brother Rex should take a page out of Daddies playbook and JUST SHUT UP AND PLAY !

Their old man has a Superbowl Title to go along with his mouth !

  121. jamesonkryan1 says: Nov 6, 2011 9:31 AM

Lets make a “best of” list and see if Rob Ryan wins…

Best D-coordinator in the NFL – um Dick Lebeau, anyone with a brain disagree?

Best D-coordinator in the NFC – Gregg Williams (but this isnt a lock)
Best D-coordinator in the NFC East – Perry Fewell, hell i might take Jim Haslett here ahead of Rob
Best D-coordinator in Texas – sorry Rob, you lose again its Wade Phillips
Best D-coordinator of the Ryan family – nope, Rob comes in 3rd as Buddy and Rex were better in these positions.

Best fat Gandalf lookalike? – Ding ding ding! We have a winner…finally, something Rob Ryan is the best at! Bravo – just because your defense helped the Browns upset the Pats last year, does not make you the best defensive coordinator…its over, move on.

  122. dirtdawg55 says: Nov 6, 2011 9:36 AM

Rob Ryan has never coached a number one defensive unit and he says he is the best at what he does (I love how his supporters play semantics by saying he didn’t say he was the best DC, he said he was the best at what he does. Well, is he not a DC? Is that not what he does?). Meanwhile, there are three extremely talented coordinators up in Cincy, Balt and Pitt. Ever hear from any of them? When was the last time LeBeau talked trash?

What did Tomlin say this week about his defense (number 2 in the NFL) and Baltimore’s defense (number 1 in the NFL)? He said – and I paraphrase – “I am not prepared to put us in the same conversation. We are not even close to what they are doing”.

See the difference Ryans? There are guys who talk about what they do but cant live up to it (the Ryan family), there are guys who talk about what they do but can live up to it and then there are guys who let the work they do speak for itself (LeBeau, Zimmer, Pagano, Haslett, et al)

  123. snarkzilla says: Nov 6, 2011 9:46 AM

    >he says he’s the best at what he does..

He’s among the best at bloviation and chowing down. I’ll give him those. Pretty damn good as a poster boy for trailer park culture, too.

  124. tommytd says: Nov 6, 2011 10:14 AM

Thanks to their old man, the Ryan boys never met a mic they didn’t like. Unfortunately, their big yaps and their inability to keep them shut, places added pressure on their teams which need not be the case. Winning in the NFL is difficult enough without creating useless bulletin board material. Seems to me both their teams are mediocre at best – why not shut ‘em and just play the game??? Tom Landry…we miss you

  125. 2ndaryinsanity says: Nov 6, 2011 11:04 AM

I’m not saying the Texans are so awesome we’re super bowl bound. I’m not dancing in the streets, celebrating the fact we MIGHT win the division by default. All I’m sayin’ is that Wade Phillips has been a friggin’ miracle worker here in Houston. Our defense was the laughingstock of the NFL last season. All he’s done is: switch our D from a 4-3 to a 3-4 with no OTA’s and a shortened training camp; sucessfully moved players from 1 position to another (Mario Williams was starting to shine as an LB before the injury). We’ve had several players at various positions go out with season-ending injuries, yet the “next man up” has been performing well. So, yeah…I think it’s funny that our defense is kicking a## with a coordinator who conducts himself as a professional should, while Dallas’ defense gets humiliated by the Eagles and their coordinator’s acts like a clown.
It obviously runs in the family. The dynamic Ryan Brothers have no one to blame but themselves (and maybe genetics) for the fact they are the punchline of a very bad joke. Their act is better suited for Saturday Night Live or the WWE.

  126. 2ndaryinsanity says: Nov 6, 2011 11:11 AM

The “classy” Oilers’ left town when their greedy owner couldn’t squeeze anymore $$$ from the taxpayers. Just a few years before, taxpayers footed the bill for renovations the Astrodome needed. That wasn’t enough for the “classy” Bud Adams, so he demanded a new stadium. When the answer was “No,” he packed up his team and left. Oh, and don’t forget the class displayed by Adams when he gave the double bird @ the Bills game a few years back. Classy Oilers, indeed.

  127. screbels89 says: Nov 6, 2011 2:20 PM

What is Ryan’s signature game where he shut down a good offense? As a Raiders fan, I think he may be one of the most overrated of all time along with Mike (I haven’t won jack without John) Shanahan. I realize when he was with us, Al was probably meddling a lot, but I just dont see it from this guy.

  128. husker0004 says: Nov 6, 2011 3:05 PM

“The only stat that counts is points allowed by a defense huh”? What about points not allowed by a defense in a game? Punt block for td against Jets, int for TD against Jets, and back to back ints for TDs against Detroit……now please explain to me how those are on the defense and it’s coordinator. Blowhard huh………..Evidently you’re a moron.
