Ravens-Steelers is exactly what you’d expect

Raven's Suggs taunts Steelers fans before the teams' NFL football game in Pittsburgh Reuters

Hines Ward has been knocked out of Sunday’s game after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit.

(Ward is officially questionable to return with a “stinger” but his helmet is off. We’d be shocked if the team didn’t announce he has a concussion after the game.)

There have been hard hits, goal-line stands, no touchdowns, and another illegal helmet-to-helmet collision by Steelers safety Ryan Clark that helped to set up a Ravens field goal just before halftime.

Terrell Suggs opened the second half with a big interception of Ben Roethlisberger on a wide receiver screen.

In short, the Ravens’ 9-6 lead over Pittsburgh is just what we expected on Sunday.

The next 30 minutes will go a long way towards deciding the AFC North winner this year.  Watch it on SNF Extra.

what did ray lewis whisper in hines ward’s ear?

that was helmet to helmet on defenseless receiver…
i loved the hit… should have been a flag technically though…

“Hines Ward has been knocked out of Sunday’s game after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit.”

Missed the first quarter or so of the game, but I’m assuming he led into somebody and it finally bit him in the ass?

If a poorly officiated game is “exactly what you’d expect” then you are correct with your header.

steelers are getting homered at home – the officials have screwed up several calls in favor of the ravens
    - the hit on hines ward by ray lewis was helme to helmet and should have been flagged which gives the steelers a first down
    - the pass interference on ike taylor was complete crap – boldin reaches out and grabbed him first
-the catch on the sideline by one of the ravens that tomlin challenged should have been overturned the ground clearly helped him secure the ball

what a joke – the officials should be fined just like the players…its just amazing how many calls are blown every Sunday across the NFL – they are mostly imcompetent

  7. bensstinkyfingers says: Nov 6, 2011 10:51 PM

Wow a classic battle between these two teams As A Browns fan it is enjoyable to watch these two beat the snot out of each other, since our team is horrible we have to get some satisfaction and watching HInes Ward get layed out, Palamolu thrown to ground by Ray Rice Etc. is great entertainment. Keep Beating each other up, I think I’ll root for the Ravens the lesser of two evils.

  8. grs27 says: Nov 6, 2011 10:53 PM

The Ray Lewis Helmet to helmet hit on Ward was MUCH worse than Clark, But of course the refs dont call it…Harrison STILL gets held all the time…but this is the Steelers…we are used to this BS.

  12. reggiebush25 says: Nov 6, 2011 11:37 PM

Man the Ravens will never win anything with Chazz, I mean Joe the choke Flacco at the helm.

  13. your6ringsaremeaninglessnow says: Nov 6, 2011 11:37 PM

Steelers fans complaining about officiating is hillarious. Your Super Bowl win against the Seahawks was exclusively due to bad officiating in your favor. Six rings? More like five won, one stolen.

  14. flabtreesports says: Nov 6, 2011 11:38 PM

Leave it to steeler fans to whine about officiating even after that abortion of a first drive. Completely changed the game. I’ve never heard so much crying from a team that gets calls week in and week out. Who cares about fines if you’re winning games?

  15. rarson says: Nov 6, 2011 11:47 PM

    Wow. Game of the weekend.

The officiating has been bad, but it’s also gone both ways. Can’t say either team really has had an advantage,

  17. baltimoreballs says: Nov 6, 2011 11:51 PM

  19. johntonioholmes says: Nov 6, 2011 11:51 PM

That last play was a pushoff but whatever. It would be one thing if they weren’t assisted by a slew of missed calls and bad calls, but of course I have to come away feeling like my favorite team has been cheated instead of feeling like they were just beaten, like in the first game.

But hats off to Flacco’s unibrow.

Figures. When Torrey Smith showed up on the postgame I told my friend “This wont sit will with Ray Ray…he’s gonna hijack this”

Sure enough, once Flacco gets his words in, Ray Ray has to linger around like a snitching little fart and wax on about God’s will or some BS. Funny how Tebow gets hell for referencing his faith but the pious Reverend Ray Ray never gets called on his crap. Maybe the media is afraid of getting shivved in an alley, perhaps.

  28. cowhawkfan says: Nov 7, 2011 12:00 AM

    @napgamer

Worst officiated game ever was the Pitt-Sea Superbowl. That game was universally panned as the worst ever, especially factoring in that it was the Super Bowl. Even most Steeler fans I know admit it was bad. Not dogging the Steelers for winning that game as I grew up a huge Steeler fan and as my Dad still is. But it was the worst officiated game I’ve ever seen. :)

  29. ramofsteel says: Nov 7, 2011 12:00 AM

Yeah, I’ll admit that the Steelers should’ve stopped them on the final drive. But you know what, I don’t care..that Ray Lewis hit on Ward was helmet to helmet and of course it wasn’t called. WHERE THE HELL IS THE CONSISTENCY. WANT TO PROTECT THE PLAYERS…PROTECT ALL OF THEM EQUALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. steelersownyou says: Nov 7, 2011 12:02 AM

Worst officiated game ever. All the refs must have been from baltimore. That was a shame. It tarnished what would of been a classic. Lebeaus defensive calls on final drive with press man coverage was the worst call ive ever seen!

  31. 1paulkemp1 says: Nov 7, 2011 12:02 AM

    HOW BOUT THEM HARBAUGHS!!!!!!!!!

  32. steelwarriors55 says: Nov 7, 2011 12:03 AM

We didnt deserve to win that game. All night we got torched on 3rd down.Really bad coverage, bad playcalling from both Arians and Lebeau(specially on our last offensive drive) and bad decisions from our Head Coach.Trying to kick the FG would have made the game tied at 23 or give us more time to try to make a FG because they would have started from the 37 instead of their own 8.Anyway the best team won and the worst part is that we still have to go to the no longer jokes Cincy Bengals 2 times. This season is far from over but we need to play better than that or we arent going to make it to the playoffs.

Congrats to the Ravens and their fans and hopefully next time will be the lucky one for us(week 20 maybe) !!!

Dont act like a seahawks fan,we dont need the refs to win a game.I thought the holding call on the Ravens that negated the opening td was a ghost call too.We had them in the ropes but just didnt close it out. They cameback and won this thing and we sucked big time on their last drive. No we need to suck it up stop crying and whining and we’ll be back because that’s what winners do.

In defeat, losers blame everyone and everything, winners blame themselves

You won a super bowl with such bad officiating that a referee apologized for it.

    Ravens > Steelers

  38. joerevs300 says: Nov 7, 2011 12:11 AM

Look, I’m a Steelers fan and life sucks right about now. Losing both divisional games to your most bitter enemy/rival…if you feel good after that just turn in your fandom right then and there.

There is still more games to be played. They are even in the W column. PIT goes 12-4, BAL goes 11-5, these two games mean nothing.

PIT has to take care of CIN and get some help, otherwise it’s going to be on the road for the playoffs.

I will say this: If NE doesn’t win the AFC East, PIT owns the H2H tiebreaker.

Would it not be sweet to get in as a WC and knock NE out in the process?

  39. mistersmith22 says: Nov 7, 2011 12:12 AM

napgamer, that’s what happens on holding when the play went for +10 yards.

What else do the Steelers fans have to whine about now? We blew you out in week one, then won in a tough, tight battle in your house. I wonder what kind of technicality or small detail you guys will cling to now. Like Suggs says, your soul may belong to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Ravens.

  40. marilynpost says: Nov 7, 2011 12:12 AM

Sorry ladies no whining. We beat the crap out of you in our house and then beat you on a last minute drive in your house. We are a better team than you step up to the plate be men no excuses and say it. Steelernation, bubby , deb, all of you. Time to belly up to the bar

  42. stuartscottslefteye says: Nov 7, 2011 12:13 AM

Does ever a Steelers/Ravens game go by where the Raven’s don’t have a touchdown brought back because of a penalty?

  43. Andre's Johnson says: Nov 7, 2011 12:14 AM

Yeah, the officials may have given the Ravens a couple of breaks, but you can’t deny the fact that Flacco was the truth on that last drive.

As a Texans fan, I was rooting (mildly) for the Steelers because a) the Ravens scare me a little more, b) the Texans own the head-to-head against the Steelers, and c) the Ravens own the head-to-head against the Texans. Come to think of it, the Ravens just plain own the Texans. Damn.

Too early to worry too much about playoff matchups, I think, but when you’re a Texans fan this is uncharted territory.

    Anyway, good game tonight.

Pardon the SEC heresy, but the Steelers/Ravens game was about a million times more entertaining than the LSU/Alabama game.

  44. bostonbias says: Nov 7, 2011 12:14 AM

That said, Baltimore fans still rank 32nd in the NFL in terms of class.

Wow..what a game! Big win against a still impressive steeler team, looking forward to the annual round 3 game (hopefully). Questionable calls on both sides from the refs (nothing new). Big ben still finds a way to extend a play like no other. I thought both defenses played ok, but it was the offenses that stole the show. Glad to be a fan in the greatest rivalry in football.

  48. ball20hawk says: Nov 7, 2011 12:21 AM

Man right before Ray rice ran in the first touchdown of the game I heard loud and clear through the television from the steeler fans, FLACCO SUCKS, FLACCO SUCKS. Ever since this kid came up he has been criticized as much as anyone in the NFL. Especially from steeler fans who said he could never win a game aganist big Ben, could never come in and win at hienz field, could never put the team on his back……..well the last 2 years in Pitt he has thrown game winning touchdowns and he swept the season series WITH BEN STARTING. It’s about time you throw all that out and respect this guy as a legitimate quarterback who will beat you.

  49. Deb says: Nov 7, 2011 12:21 AM

Congrats to the Ravens and much respect to Flacco for that final drive. This was a much more satisfying game than our first meeting–more in the Steelers/Ravens tradition. After my Tide lost to LSU last night 9-6, have to say the football universe has a weird sense of humor when we went in at the half trailing … 9-6. But at least some TDs were scored in this great defensive battle.

Refs were terrible, but the Steelers had every opportunity to win this game and they didn’t. Putting the loss on the refs is stupid and a cop-out.

Torry Smith burned them twice on the final drive.

Worse than that was the soft defense they played on the final drive.

I’d say I wish the Ravens and Steelers could play each other every week, but I know my heart would give out around week 4 haha.

Hope Ward is OK. Ward got Reed a few years ago, and we got him back last night. I don’t think it was helmet to helmet. It was dangerously close, but it was shoulder to helmet. Clark will be seeing a fine too.

Are you kidding me about the Hines Ward hit? He is one of the dirtiest players in football and if you pull him up on youtube.com, all of his hits are helmet to jaw/neck area. I’d say he had it coming. And glad Ray gave it to him, albeit accidentally.

    tinkerbell8206 …

Accidentally? My, you have an interesting fantasy life

    @ppdoc13 …

Just saw your post. Now you know I’m always going to come on here and give props to your Ravens. But I am not a “belly up to the bar” kinda girl LOL

    LOL! Thank you very much!

And, it was actually helmet to shoulder if you watch closely and NOT the typical Hines Ward cheap shot!!!

tinkerbell8206, the angle I saw looked like a clear helmet to helmet. Other angles may show something different. But I don’t think it can be helmet to anything, if I understand the new rules (or the new reinforcement of the old rules  ). Shoulder to helmet is okay, but not helmet to shoulder … if I understand Goodell correctly. And it would kind of worry me if I understood Goodell correctly ;)

Hines? Cheap shots? Pshaw! Your rookies should keep their heads on a swivel. Welcome to the NFL :)

Yea, Hines Ward is SO dirty he gets fined ALL the time.
No wait, he is never fined, because he plays within the rules. People think he is “dirty” because he does what you do not expect a WR do, play the role of a halfback and be a blocking reciever.

There is NO WAY that hit by Ray Lewis was accidental. You saw Ray lower his head and load up against Hines. The size of the fine that Ray gets this week is going to reflect that.
