Bills sign Dave Rayner

The Bills held auditions for kickers to replace the injured Rian Lindell and settled on Dave Rayner for the job.

Rayner’s agent, who also reps Lindell, announced the news on Tuesday afternoon. Rayner played one game for the Raiders when Sebastian Janikowski was injured earlier this year, but the Raiders were shutout so Rayner never got a chance to try a field goal or extra point. He has also played with the Colts, Packers, Chiefs, Chargers, Bengals and Lions.

Lindell is expected to be out about four weeks after injuring his shoulder in Sunday’s 27-11 loss to the Jets. He’s made 13-of-15 field goals and all 25 extra points he’s tried this season.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bills also tried out Brandon Coutu, Shayne Graham and Rhys Lloyd.

  1. Rayner must have one hell of an agent. You never know when a temporary signing like this will result in a permanent gig. Look at Billy Cundiff- he was out of football for a couple of years before filling in for the Browns’ Phil Dawson. He did well and soon landed the permanent job with the Ravens.

  2. I’m surprised they didn’t sign Shayne Graham, he has the best stats out of the kickers floating around the league.
I just hope Dave Rayner has what it takes, Buffalo relied a lot on Ryan Lindell. The next 4 weeks are very important.

  3. bills need alot more than a kicker to replace lindell at this point. when other teams study how ryan game planned for buffalo its gonna make for a long second half of the season. i`ll still stick with my prediction of 9-7 and thats if they are very lucky. the bills payed fitzpatrick WAY too soon.

  4. Happy Rayner found work, he was good in Detroit and I think had a legit shot to beat out Hanson for the starting job even. I kinda hoped he’d still be available whenever Hanson does retire but he’s too good to stay unemployed for long.
