Getty ImagesThe Detroit Lions have seen a domino effect of injuries on special teams this week.
Kicker Jason Hanson suffered an injury to his left knee during the bye week, and although Hanson’s injury is not expected to keep him out of Sunday’s game against the Bears, it was serious enough that the Lions asked punter Ryan Donahue to practice his place kicking this week, just in case.
Unfortunately, Donahue strained a quadricep while kicking a field goal in practice, and now he’s expected to miss Sunday’s game.
As a result, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports, the Lions signed punter Robert Malone today. To make room on the roster for Malone, the Lions put offensive tackle Jason Fox on injured reserve. Malone played for the Buccaneers last year.
If the injuries at kicker and punter give the Lions problems, Bears return man Devin Hester would be just the man to take advantage. Unfortunately for the Bears, Hester has been hobbled by an ankle injury this week. His status for Sunday is not yet known.

Frist to ask?
Why did Fox go IR don’t that make him done for the year people in Detroit was thinking about playing time for him.
Yikes. The only upside for Detroit would be if Hester couldn’t go either. Otherwise this could be painful for the blue and silver.
Even though Hanson is one of the best all time place kickers, they are both still just kickers. The Lions will be just fine.
Hanson is the Lions all time scoring leader. Uh-Oh.
They don’t need kickers, they only score touchdowns. Sue can kick the extra points.
Only if he makes them.
Malone is not a bad punter.
Fox goes on IR? Couldn’t they put someone else, like Don Carey, on IR instead?
This tells me the issue with Fox is more serious than they had thought. For those who thought Jason Fox was the future at LT, it’s time to start thinking about the draft.
When in doubt, Suh can kick – although he did miss (and cost us the game) last season.
Add ‘ pride ‘ to the list, the Bears are going to even up the series this weekend.
