Philip Rivers: “We’re 4-5, it’s been worse”

The Chargers are on a four-game losing streak but quarterback Philip Rivers says now is not the time to panic.

Instead, Rivers would like to point out that the Chargers have been through rough stretches before and ended up having successful seasons.

It’s been worse,” Rivers said, via “I feel like a broken record for saying it, but we’re 4-5. It’s been worse than this before.”

Rivers is right: The Chargers have been worse than 4-5 and still managed to make the playoffs. In 2008, the Chargers were 4-8 through 12 games, and then they won four straight, finished 8-8 and won the AFC West. They even beat the Colts in the first round of the playoffs.

And considering that 8-8 might turn out to be good enough to win the AFC West this year, too, Rivers may be right that it’s not time to panic. But I’d advise him to try not to fall to 4-8 like they did three years ago.

itll take more than 8-8 to win that division this year.

  2. grogansheroes says: Nov 11, 2011 6:26 PM

This team has been Norved! They get a little worse each year he is there. Chargers management, and I use that term loosely, will never learn. Should of fired him last year and brought in Rob Ryan, or Harbaugh.

  3. pdxbolt says: Nov 11, 2011 6:29 PM

Or we could try pass protection. That seems to work for some other teams.

  4. 2sloweggroll says: Nov 11, 2011 6:34 PM

The StD disChargers are the worst franchise in the league. Sorry fans, whiny players who cry about everything and a GM who fires a coach who just went 14-2 in the regular season.

They let Brees go for Rivers
They let E. Turner go for a old LT
They Sproles go for a fat Tolbert
They isolate their best players because they wont sign them to fair market deals

Oh yeah, when they Built Qualcomm they forgot to add a Trophy Case

    Why does he keep talking?

  6. gb4mn0 says: Nov 11, 2011 6:44 PM

Listening to Rivers is getting as annoying as fingernails across the blackboard or even worse listening to a bottom feeding vikequeens rube on the 9 to noon.

Phil – you’re 4-5 and have NEVER looked worse.

  13. mark0226 says: Nov 11, 2011 7:00 PM

He has been saying the same thing every week after a sub-par performance. We’re 4-1, so all is good. Hey, we’re 4-2, it’s all fine. No worries, we’re 4-3, still in the hunt. We’re 4-4 tied for division lead. look, we’re 4-5, no need to panic, we’ve been worse.

Yeah, you were 1-15 once too and you had the #1 overall pick, which you traded away. In that draft, you got LT and Brees, so look on the bright side. Maybe you’ll get some good players next year in the draft, assuming AJ is gone.

  14. sdboltfan says: Nov 11, 2011 7:01 PM

At the end of the season, he will say we were 4-12 and we have been through much worse seasons. Pathetic ! There is no accountability in this organization. Rivers needs to be cured of Norvatis…

Deano.. I beg you, fire Norv and AJ right now ! We need a real head coach… Gruden and Cowher are available and will be willing to consider this job if the egomaniac AJ is given the boot.

  15. tampajoey says: Nov 11, 2011 7:03 PM

Actually Philip Rivers is incorrect, it’s NEVER been worse.

The San Diego Chargers have started 4-5 four times including this season since Rivers became a Charger (2011, 2010, 2008 & 2005) But have never started worse than 4-5.

2011 record in first 9 game was: 4-5
2010 record in first 9 game was: 4-5
2009 record in first 9 game was: 6-3
2008 record in first 9 game was: 4-5
2007 record in first 9 game was: 5-4
2006 record in first 9 game was: 7-2
2005 record in first 9 game was: 4-5
2004 record in first 9 game was: 6-3

He seem’s really butt hurt that the Raiders are in 1st place.
Raiders will go 10-6 or better and win the WEST.. Chargers have a great team but they have turkey neck Turner as the coach.. I don’t hate the Chargers like some Raider fans but I dont live on the WEST either.. Here I hate the PATS as well as Cheifs and Donkeys

  17. justwinbaby29 says: Nov 11, 2011 7:28 PM

As a Raiders fan (all due respect to KC and Denver who’ve beaten the Raiders in Oakland) San Diego is still the team I’m most concerned with.

The problem is SD’s schedule is tough- at Bears, at Lions, at Broncos, Ravens, Bills, Raiders and Jacksonville.

San Diego at Oakland will be for the AFC west crown Sunday night January 1st on NBC IMO.

  19. jcdavey2011 says: Nov 11, 2011 7:47 PM

Funny, I just wanted to see how the fans of the StD disChargers would respond to my comment of their team being the worst franchise in the league, yet none of their fans have steped up to defended them.

Then I remembered … they dont have any fans. haha that three in a row we got you clowns.

  21. kyleortonsarm says: Nov 11, 2011 7:52 PM

Oh yeah? Successful seasons? Like the ones where they got Super Bowl Win……… oooooooooh yeah, that’s right, they haven’t done that. Every single season since the team was created has been a complete waste. They’re the San Diego Eagles at this point.

  22. contraryguy says: Nov 11, 2011 7:53 PM

“…He seem’s really butt hurt that the Raiders are in 1st place.”

Dodgy choice of words this week, ‘butt hurt’.

Anybody else remember the sniping between Rivers and Cutler when they were in the same division, seemed like Rivers had the upper hand, but now?

  23. brutus3413 says: Nov 11, 2011 7:56 PM

There is a story about Arnold Palmer playing golf with an amateur. After Arnie rolled a long putt just past the hole, the amateur said “Nice putt!”. Arnold responded by pointing out that nice putts go in the hole.

I think Rivers needs to refine his definition of success. Anything short of winning a Super Bowl, which he has not done, is a failure. I can barely remember who lost a particular Super Bowl, because second place and lower is typically not worth remembering.

  24. enriqueic says: Nov 11, 2011 7:58 PM

I have been a die-hard Chargers fans for many years, and never have I been this frustrated with the organization. Norv and A.J. have got to go. The way A.J. manages our players is appalling, and Turners play calling is borderline stupid. We were once the team to beat in the league, but those days are over. While I have learned to never count the Chargers out of anything until they have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, things are looking pretty bleak. It pains me to say this, but Raiders are playing better then we are.

  25. vanmorrissey says: Nov 11, 2011 7:59 PM

polegojim, damn right. This team sucks from the head down so I don’t know why he keeps opening his stupid piehole. Chargers offense=throw the ball in the direction of a receiver and hope they make a play, which they now can’t due to injuries, or whatever else excuse there is since they can’t separate from a defender. Running game = a bumbler and a fumbler. Chargers defense = a bunch of nobodies who can’t and don’t make plays. Excuses, after excuses, it comes down the GM not getting much out of drafts since the draftees all suck, injury prone, or just plain roster fillers, Head coach stimulates his team as much as a bag of rocks.

  26. jcdavey2011 says: Nov 11, 2011 8:03 PM

    so take that haha

  27. swervinmervin says: Nov 11, 2011 8:13 PM

8-8 win the division? Really? The Raiders have 5 wins right now. They have a Carson Palmer who is starting to look good. They have a Darren McFadden who is getting healthy. They have Michael Bush who is a great 2nd RB. They have a ton of young fast WRs. They have a good OL. They have a good CB and a pretty good pass rushing front 7.

If you think that team above will only win 3 more games the rest of the way you are a fraud and dont really know that much about the NFL.

  28. rayguyreturns says: Nov 11, 2011 8:21 PM

As a Raider fan, you would think this is gloat time. No way! After giving away a game to K.C. with 6 picks and our defense sleeping through the Denver game, we’ll take ANY win.

This is the first time in a long time that I have seen the Chargers play the Raiders with NO heart. Man, they looked disinterested.

Both teams played last Sunday. Both teams have half their starting line-ups out with injuries. We have a quarterback with about 2 1/2 weeks in our system.

Really shocking to see that last night. The final score didn’t reflect the true outcome of this game.

  30. snnyjcbs says: Nov 11, 2011 8:29 PM

8-8 will not win the AFC West this year, it is going to take 9 at least. Chargers will fall to Ravens, Detroit, Chicago, Bills and Oakland in their remaining games finishing 6-10 at best 7-9.

Palmer with time will take over as the top QB in the AFC West. If the Chargers could not pull it off when all the other teams in the AFC West were winning 4 games per year they do not have a shot as it stands now.

They were never as good as you Media Types liked to Hype them as being and they have always been the Paris Hilton of the NFL.

You should be mighty proud of that, Phil. “We could really stink and still squeak into the Playoffs because our entire Division is ridiculously bad”. Sorry, Phil, but either KC or Oakland is going to beat you this year. You had your chances in that pathetic division for years, and couldn’t make the most of it. Time to give someone else a chance.

  33. r97rrw says: Nov 11, 2011 9:04 PM

Unfortunately for Rivers and the Chargers, no team has ever made it to the Super Bowl when losing 4 games in a row during the season. This trend will continue.

  34. icanspeel says: Nov 11, 2011 9:05 PM

First of all, I’m a Philip Rivers fan. Having said that, I also believe that his latest replies to certain questions does NOT make him a true leader of this team. When asked by a media report if he was ‘frustrated with the team performance’ he said “absolutely not”! Pardon me…why are you pissed, Philip? By smiling and saying that you’re not frustrated, you give the impression to the rest of the Chargers that it’s alright to lose. It NOT! Show some pissed emotion, not a canned response. Secondly, it’s summized that QBs take on the personality of their coach…, listening to Norv with his…we need to fix things, but mañana. Losing is okay……said the coach who is losing his. Philip needs to show more fire then milk-toast.

Really? No team has EVER made it to the SuperBowl after losing 4 games in a row in a season.

2002 Oakland Raiders? Uh? Yep, lost 4 in a row. Went to SuperBowl.

    So much for your “trend.”

No what you’re talking about next time?

  41. philtration says: Nov 11, 2011 10:02 PM

Chargers should have kept Brees and drafted Larry Fitzgerald.

I would take that combination over Rivers any day of the week.

  42. rraider says: Nov 11, 2011 10:04 PM

Double check that stat. I havent looked it up yet but i think the Raiders won 4, then lost 4, then went 7-1 in 2002 on their way to the Bowl………….I could be wrong.

  43. vikesfansteve says: Nov 11, 2011 10:11 PM

8-8 or 7-9 might be good enough to win the west.

The Raiders are still vulnerable if you stop the run.

The Vikings would take 4-5 & only 1 game back.

The AFC West is wide open.

  44. jpb12 says: Nov 11, 2011 10:17 PM

  48. ratedrsuperstar1331 says: Nov 11, 2011 10:54 PM

They have been 4-8 and made the playoffs before. But Philip Rivers was also playing a hell of a lot better during that slump than he is now. Without #17 playing at his normally high level, the Chargers are a mediocre team at best, terrible at worst.

  49. raiderapologist says: Nov 11, 2011 10:55 PM

You probably won’t read this, Philip, but I believe in you. And I’m not alone.

Raiders did lose 4 in a row in 2002. Good job. I thought they were 12-4 that year, but they were 11-5. Despite this, no team has ever lost 4 in a row during the season and won the Super Bowl.

They let a good coach in Marty Schottenheimer go for Nervous Norv Turner. They let premier players Drew Brees, LaDanian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, and Darren Sproles go. Good players they re-signed are the oft-injured Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates. They didn’t care to re-stock the offensive line so basically, Phillip Rivers feels he’s out there having to do it all by himself. The common denominator in this mess is GM A.J. Smith. He is the one who MUST go and soon!

  53. Andre's Johnson says: Nov 11, 2011 11:26 PM

Rivers has, in the past, had some badass moments…playing hurt, making big plays, inspiring his teammates. But now he just looks whiny and lost.

I agree with a lot of folks when I say he seems to be playing hurt.

    Looks to be Oakland’s year.

  55. ambitoos says: Nov 11, 2011 11:51 PM

Rivers and Norv have been blowing smoke and trying to sell tickets all year. Looking at they’re schedule they could win one more game and that’s if Tebow has a bad day. They have to rebuild from top to bottom. I see more blackouts.

  56. whodeybaby11 says: Nov 12, 2011 12:57 AM

  57. chobes68 says: Nov 12, 2011 1:23 AM

Raider’s fans talk lots of crap for a team that was just shutout at home by KC, and then Tebowed by 14 at home.

Some of these posts are insightful, some funny, and some are just stupid.

I only wish they enforced spellcheck, or a basic grammar check.

  58. cannonballdookie says: Nov 12, 2011 1:28 AM

I’m sick of hearing it’s Norv’s fault, he’s not the one on the field underachieving week after week. He’s not throwing bone headed INT’s left and right or the one letting linemen run free at the QB all game. There comes a point where the players need to be held accountable.

  59. thumper59 says: Nov 12, 2011 1:29 AM

This year, more than ever, it’s about the quality of depth a team has, and the Chargers depth is pretty bad.

The Raiders had 15 backups in the game on Thursday due to injury, and they still beat the Chargers on the road.

This Charger team is no where near as strong as they used to be, their window is now closed.
