Saturday had words for 0-9 Colts on Monday

Washington Redskins v Indianapolis Colts Getty Images

The day after the Colts fell to 0-9, the players decided that it was time for them to meet in the hopes of turning things around.

What took them so long?

Per the Associated Press, center Jeff Saturday said Friday that a players-only meeting was held after the latest embarrassing loss, this time to the Falcons.

I felt like it needed to be said and I said it,” Saturday said.  “We just need to play better as a team, we need to get wins and ultimately that’s what it was about.”

Saturday declined to offer any details regarding the conversation.  Receiver Reggie Wayne was more forthcoming.

“He didn’t have to yell, he didn’t have to scream or sound like a macho man or Randy Savage,” Wayne said.  “Play football, nothing else.  Love football, nothing else.  Be a man, nothing else.”

The Colts have their last, best chance at a win on Sunday, when the 2-6 Jaguars come to town.

Of course, the fans may regard the outcome as a win only if the team loses, moving another step closer to Andrew Luck.

    “Saturday on Monday.”

Sounds like the title of a 1960′s art house movie.

Knock off the “suck for Luck” business. Crap is getting real old, real fast.

At this rate, we will be seeing Tebow, Paterno, Luck, and Peyton Manning’s neck all making out sometime soon to bring these fiascos to boil.

reggie wayne tho? just stop it , STOP IT!!!

you said you wanted your guy painter, how’d that work out?

you also said you wanted a new contract, ummm ur not getting andre johnson or fitz loot buddy…

if marvin harrison plays with that colts team NO WAY they lose to New Orleans,

reggie wayne is not a #1 , manning just made him look like it all those years after harrison…

I don’t think even the great veteran Center Saturday can revive these Dolts. They’re too far gone. 7-9 if they win out! Not happening.

    Better Luck next year.

shocking colts 0-9 this year so shocking after beating teams like jacksonville last year at home 34-24 and beating tennessee last year at home 23-20 and this year is a totally totally different story

  13. dumplingsrbrown says: Nov 12, 2011 12:09 AM

I’m no Colts fan so I haven’t seen them play this year but it seems to me that at 0-9, if you’re going to hang your hopes on one man, it shouldn’t be Andrew Luck. Seems it would make a lot more sense on focusing on Jim Caldwell and how soon he will exit Indianapolis.

Why wait till Friday to talk about Saturday having words on Monday? A popular daily blog such as this should wait no later than Tuesday. But Tuesday passed is silence along with Wednesday and Thursday.

Now Friday has expired, and here we are on Saturday as we ponder Saturday’s words from Monday. This odd timing is perplexing, but as a reader I’ll try to take it one day at a time.

  16. axespray says: Nov 12, 2011 12:26 AM

probably better to have had words back when they were the 0-0 colts and had a chance to prove they were more than just the Peytons.

  17. mayhemmatt300 says: Nov 12, 2011 12:28 AM

Way to wait till 0-9 to speak up Saturday. You’re old and don’t deserve to protect Peyton when he comes back.

  18. silverbuffalo says: Nov 12, 2011 12:39 AM

If the colts get Andrew and he’s a dud will it just be Bad Luck fir the colts?

  19. Andre's Johnson says: Nov 12, 2011 12:41 AM

The Colts are truly an embarrassment right now. Look, I’m a Texans fan, so I know all about crappy football. But the Texans have never been noncompetitive chumps. The Colts are putrid, and they only have themselves to blame.

It seems almost laughable to imagine that the Colts would be any better than 4-5 WITH Manning right now.

  20. staffordsyear says: Nov 12, 2011 1:10 AM

As a lions fan I don’t wish 0-16 on any team or fanbase, its hell…well maybe the Vikings if they stay in mn.

  21. btwicey says: Nov 12, 2011 1:10 AM

Andrew luck has 2 arms and 2 legs just like anyone else. Being happy with a loss is the most pathetic and embarrassing thing in sports. They’re professional football players earning millions to go and win, and win they will TRY and do I’m sure.

  22. mark0226 says: Nov 12, 2011 1:11 AM

Seriously, how can one man make or break a team like the loss of Peyton Manning? They clearly have some talent besides Manning on that team. There are many other teams with less talent that are able to win a game.

  23. hurricane73 says: Nov 12, 2011 1:41 AM

Yeah, because there is no way they could beat a two win Carolina team who got one of their wins thanks to an old, no good punter.

  24. texansmike says: Nov 12, 2011 2:05 AM

You know I’m a Texans fan, but I think Jeff Saturday is so stand up. This message to his team and everyone on it so simple. Be a man. Whether the storm. Some will survive. some won’t It’s up to the individual. Film tells all. Go to work every day. Jeff Saturday = good man.

  25. bosstown1 says: Nov 12, 2011 2:11 AM

  26. hittfamily says: Nov 12, 2011 2:11 AM

  27. ddudelebowskidudele says: Nov 12, 2011 2:20 AM

What a pathetic organization. Hopefully peyton can come back and win a couple games so that Andrew and Oliver luck aren’t forced to pull an eli and Archie just to avoid this mess.

    That word is LOSS

“Of course, the fans may regard the outcome as a win only if the team loses, moving another step closer to Andrew Luck.”

I’m a Lions fan. Trust me, you don’t want to go 0-16. That’s embarrassing, and pride matters to these guys. These guys need to get themselves at least one victory. Winning a game or two IS more important than making sure you land Luck. After all, Manning being hurt and them going winless so far just proves that the team lacks talent at many positions. You can land a great player with the #2 pick, even if it’s not Luck. And who knows, maybe Luck will be a bust at the NFL level. He sure has a great running game to make life easy for him vs those soft Pac-10 defenses.

  30. goawayeverybody says: Nov 12, 2011 4:32 AM

Come on Colts you can do it. Win that Andrew Luck sweepstakes, for Peyton Manning is done.

  33. CKL says: Nov 12, 2011 4:57 AM

I really cannot fathom…EVER rooting for my team to lose so they can draft some college player who may or may not pan out. It’s like rooting for your spouse to leave you so you have a chance at some hottie you’ve seen on tv but never met. Is this a phenomenon brought on by love of fantasy football, overlove of offense, casual fandom growing or what?

  34. jtbaudendistel says: Nov 12, 2011 5:19 AM

    Stanford > Colts

  35. redbeardxxv says: Nov 12, 2011 5:35 AM

Bet that fixed everything… Watch out for the Colts….they’re gonna be on fire from here on out! Ok, or maybe they’ll still suck. Luck will do well as Manning’s protege…

  36. uniballout says: Nov 12, 2011 5:44 AM

Perfect week to “rah rah” your team since it is the last chance to get a win. Why didn’t he do this weeks ago? Oh, that’s right, they were playing much better teams. Jacksonville is only a so-so team (compared to Indy), so Saturday is obviously trying to gain some “leadership” cred, though it’s pretty transparent why he chose this week.

  37. blackqbwhiterb says: Nov 12, 2011 5:53 AM

And as Saturday was speaking to his team mates, Irsay was on the phone with the trainers, convincing them Addai and others weren’t ready to play this Sunday….

  38. nationalmediacansuckit says: Nov 12, 2011 6:19 AM

This team and organization should be ashamed. Even if Peyton comes back next year, it means nothing b/c they have been exposed.

I love how the media hype machine has made it their personal goal to hype and crown this Luck kid the can’t miss once in a lifetime pick. All they are doing is building him up so they can pounce to tear him down when he doesn’t perform they way they’ve predicted. Maybe he’ll be great, maybe good or maybe Luck will “suck”.

  39. stealersfannot says: Nov 12, 2011 6:40 AM

You do know if the Lions did have the number two pick in the 2009 NFL draft was the legendary OT Jason Smith or they could have gone for that legendary LB Aaron Curry, the “safest pick in the draft”? Think of where the Lions would be without Stafford. Sometimes you win by losing.

Jeff Saturday, would you rather be snapping the ball to Curtis Painter or Andrew Luck next year? Besides, I think the Lions would like to have company to share that 0-16 record, baby.

Why? As far a I can tell he’s a decent kind of person. It’s not his fault the media is infatuated with him.

  46. redbullenergydrink says: Nov 12, 2011 8:23 AM

We all knew this was a “quarterback driven league” but seriously? Peyton meant THAT much to the team?! Looks like even the defense is worse without him.

  47. FinFan68 says: Nov 12, 2011 8:23 AM

The Colts have yet to put Manning on IR. I personally do not think he could play this year and might never play again. If Manning gets better and wants to play towards the end of the season we will see what the Colts’ intentions truly are. Will they let him play (and win a couple games) or will they force him to sit “for his own best interests and the future of the team”. You know Manning does not want Luck so he will try his best to get back on the field.

  48. hvnsent3030 says: Nov 12, 2011 8:53 AM

Geez People… SURELY you’re not THAT Dumb !! Am I the ONLY one that sees them TANKING the season ? The losing season is happening because they WANT to lose All their Games… Just to get first round draft pick !! Nice Try Saturday but… the entire World knows… it’s ok, you don’t have to pull the “we gotta get better”.. card ! The highest QB rating between the back up 3 is only 75.9 and thats out of Orlovsky.. which is Good considering his CAREER QB rating is 71.5 !

  49. jcd213 says: Nov 12, 2011 9:08 AM

All these teams needing quarterbacks, I wonder where the Pats will collect their bounty from for Mallett. I’d take him over these UNDERclassmen qb’s at Stanford and USC.

  50. turbodog1027 says: Nov 12, 2011 10:04 AM

I have never seen an organization fall flat on its face with the absense of one player.. What a joke. If I were a fan I’d be pissed at the Polians and Irsay.

  53. palinforpresidentofnorthkorea says: Nov 12, 2011 10:52 AM

Jeff Saturday should have fired the team up on ….. Saturday ….. before they suffered another loss.

  54. christopher525 says: Nov 12, 2011 10:58 AM

You know what, let Indy win out, same with all the teams in the Luck Lotto but Carolina. That top pick is going to be HUGE trade bait. We get it, having our QB already and we can load up on defense.

  55. dolphins4 says: Nov 12, 2011 11:01 AM

    Curtis Painter= loss

  56. laeaglefan says: Nov 12, 2011 11:04 AM

I’ll bet that right about now Jeff Saturday is wishing that the lockout had never been settled.

  57. melikefootball says: Nov 12, 2011 11:28 AM

Maybe all that off season decesions of not a lot of practices could have helped a team with new key figures. Jeff was great at hyping up the ending of the walk out but no luck with players.

  58. tombrookshire says: Nov 12, 2011 11:43 AM

Amazing, that without Manning, this team is as inept as any in the league. Manning is the team MVP without throwing a pass this season. Ironic though, his absence like speeds the arrival of his successor.

  59. raiderlyfe510 says: Nov 12, 2011 12:21 PM

It’s not that there without Peyton Manning..It who’s under center for the Colts now. Kerry Collins hasn’t won a game since when….2008? And when has Painter won a game?

Look the Colts Front Office is tanking for Luck. If Polian is supposed to be this great GM…how is it that he couldnt find a more viable QB than Painter and Kerry Collins????

You people need to really open your eyes. This is the biggest tank job in the history of competitive sports

  61. qdog112 says: Nov 12, 2011 12:36 PM

I guess Peyton had to tell Saturday it was time for the players only meeting. What kind of leader is he? Saturday was a spy for management during the lockout and when the cameras are rolling, he does nothing to inspire his team.

When he’s done playing, he has a job in Goodell’s office and he sees himself as a future commissioner.

  62. raiderlyfe510 says: Nov 12, 2011 12:43 PM

If Painter was QBing the Pats this year they would be about 0-9 as well.

  63. dlmcc1010 says: Nov 12, 2011 1:09 PM

The best thing the Colts can do if they do wind up drafting Luck, is trading him for a boatload of picks. The organization for years have whiffed on defensive players. Look how well thats turning out up in New England as well. It goes well beyond the fact that Painter is garbage. giving up 62 points is the stuff of a no talent, no heart defensive squad. If Manning comes back next year they have about 3-4 good years left of him. The best thing they could do is rack up draft picks to build the defense.

Also, Reggie Wayne should not get a big contract. Peyton has shown he can make just about any WR look good

  64. turtle92 says: Nov 12, 2011 7:52 PM

We don’t need luck we need to get healthy and to get back to basics. Jeff Saturday is correct we really need to play better as a team. Go Colts!

  65. edgarh21 says: Nov 13, 2011 12:03 AM

I’ve said it before and people made idiotic comments at me. Reggie Wayne is not as good as his stats shows even Marvin Harrison, Peyton is the man and makes all his players great.
