Report: Sean Payton will coach from the sidelines today

Saints coach Sean Payton said on Friday’s NBC SportsTalk that he’ll return to the sidelines with his broken leg after his team’s Week 11 bye.

He has changed his mind.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Payton will surprise his team and coach from the sidelines on Sunday at Atlanta.

Payton’s decision meshes with the perception that, when the Saints face adversity while Payton is upstairs, there’s no one on the sidelines who can get the train back on the tracks.  At the Georgia Dome on Sunday, there should be plenty of adversity for the Saints.

They should do like Nascar and wheel out one of those trailers the crew chiefs sits on. Then he can be safe from flying bodies on the sideline but still be able to talk with the players.

Doesn’t want to conjure up images of Joe Paterno.
