And just as the Bears’ offensive line was rounding into great shape, one of the five starters has been lost for the year.

Left guard Chris Williams, as expected, has been placed on Injured Reserve with a wrist injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Lions. The team announced the move on Monday.

The Bears also signed defensive end Chauncey Davis and released defensive end Nick Reed.

Picked as a first-rounder in 2008 with the intention of making him a left tackle, Williams has been more productive on the inside. This year’s first-round pick, tackle Gabe Carimi, hasn’t played since Week Two. Carimi underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday.

Edwin Williams is expected to take over for Chris Williams, as the 6-3 Bears try to keep quarterback Jay Cutler in fewer than six, or three, pieces.
