Mike Shanahan: Rex Grossman was impressive, will start this week

Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman warms up before playing the Carolina Panthers in an NFL football game in Charlotte Reuters

Rex Grossman led the Redskins to defeat on Sunday, and after the game coach Mike Shanahan said he’d decide during the week whether Grossman would remain the starter.

Now Shanahan has decided: Grossman will start on Sunday against the Cowboys.

Although Grossman threw two interceptions and the Redskins never got into the end zone in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, Shanahan said today that he thought Grossman had a good game in Miami.

I was impressed by the way he played,” Shanahan said of Grossman.

Statistically, Grossman and John Beck have been comparable this season, with Grossman having a passer rating of 65.3 and Beck checking in at 72.1. All three wins have come with Grossman starting, however, and that may be the biggest difference in Shanahan’s mind.

But whoever Shanahan picks, this year’s Redskins are proving the old adage that if you have two quarterbacks, you really don’t have one.

If you have two quarterbacks, you have two quarterbacks.

If you have two STARTING quarterbacks, you have no starting quarterbacks.

If Rex was impressive, then what kind of contract do I deserve? I didn’t throw ANY picks yesterday!

I personally thought Rex played solid. One Int wasn’t his fault either. He just makes those stupid decisions ocassionally. Oh well, they will have Matt Barkely next year and this BS won’t matter…

  16. levingibbs says: Nov 14, 2011 5:06 PM

Rex PLAYED fine yesterday, he was not the reason we lost. You can’t just read stat lines and make assumptions.

  17. bigjdve says: Nov 14, 2011 5:10 PM

Wow – he was impressed? Was he actually watching the game?

I mean really – they get the ball at the 5 yd line of Miami – FG

They get they get the ball in the red zone Interception.

Beck played himself out of a job, really how bout the players that allowed 10 sacks in a game? Did they play themselves out of a job?

Both of them aren’t very good BUT really you were impressed by a QB that threw 2 more interceptions than he did TDs, I guess I really don’t know the game as well as I thought.

  18. prior0knowledge says: Nov 14, 2011 5:10 PM

    last three games: 0, 11 & 9 points. I guess 9 looks impressive.

  19. oranjellojones says: Nov 14, 2011 5:13 PM

No what the Redskins are proving this year is you can’t go anywhere in today’s NFL without quality depth.

They were fine and competitive within the division (although no SB contender by any means) until they started losing starters to injury. They have zero depth on offense and with skill starters like Cooley, Hightower, Moss, Hankerson, Torain, and several linemen gone for several games or the entire season you’re getting exactly what many of us Skins fans expected…the firepower of a 4-5 win team. They get a few CB’s and load up on some quality offensive talent like they did with 12 draft picks and a prudent FA period last season and this team will be fine.

Peyton Manning couldn’t put up points or be successful with the amount of time Washington’s O line is giving the QB right now. 2 or less seconds isn’t enough to even make a 3 step drop…ya just can’t win with those things working against you and the Skins FO can only do so much in one offseason. This shows how truly bad Washington’s roster was when Allen and Shanny arrived.

  20. sadskinsfan89 says: Nov 14, 2011 5:14 PM

Not so sure IMPRESSIVE is the best word choice.

  21. 1bigtex says: Nov 14, 2011 5:14 PM

Let’s see, the Redskins last had the lead in a game (mind you, I’m just talking about the LEAD, not a win) over a MONTH AGO. I wonder if Shanahan has figured out that this coaching gig is a great deal harder when you don’t have Elway under center. Elway would probably be a better choice than Grossman or Beck now.

  22. sadskinsfan89 says: Nov 14, 2011 5:18 PM

And how is any nfl quarterback impressive that can’t put the ball in the endzone.

  23. nineroutsider says: Nov 14, 2011 5:18 PM

He was impressive, in the same way that the Skins were impressive.

  24. nfloracle says: Nov 14, 2011 5:20 PM

Mike, start sweating about your job security because a little bird told me that Daniel’s talking behind the scenes with Jon, who isn’t so easily impressed with quarterbacks.

    ================

You don’t know Dan Snyder very well, do you?

He won’t trade for Luck, he’ll the fool that clears the way for Luck in Indy by giving two or three #1 draft picks to the Colts for Peyton Manning, who will play half a season before a flare up of his neck injury forces him to retire.

  27. skinsfanwill says: Nov 14, 2011 5:20 PM

I’m convinced now, Mike Shanahan has something against the Redskins organization and is killing them from within. No single person can be this stupid. It’s not even possible. This has got to be an inside job.

  28. longislandcowboysfan says: Nov 14, 2011 5:24 PM

    ====================

I saw Luck against Oregon, and his “cloak of invincibility” is decreasing… its looking more like he is a system guy, with very good intangibles. I don’t quite think he is as much of a slam-dunk as a lot of others do (Phil Simms, for example).

  31. angrycorgi says: Nov 14, 2011 5:32 PM

Considering that the last time he QBed he threw 4 picks (against the iggles), I guess 2 picks is an improvement??

  32. brianforster says: Nov 14, 2011 5:36 PM

Listen, Rex Grossman sucks, but John Beck is not an NFL quarterback. Backup or otherwise.

Anyone who has watched the Skins this year could tell you that.

I’d rather watch Grossman throw picks than Beck take sacks any day of the week.

I really don’t understand why people are still reporting about the Redskins and expecting fans to come out of the woodwork in defense of the team. We have a solid group of starters but zero depth. The season is and has been OVER.

  33. dirtydrynn27 says: Nov 14, 2011 5:40 PM

What game did Shanny watch??? Grossman threw a horrible INT five yards from the endzone!,The Skins defense picked off Miami`s QB and took it all the way to 5 yard line and once again they still could`nt get in.The Redskins Defense can play pretty good football but whats the point when that awful offense and pop warner play calling cant even buy their way into the endzone……I`ve been a Redskins fan since 1972 and this team makes me wanna puke!!!! At least Jim Zorn had an offense!!!!!!

  34. skins23 says: Nov 14, 2011 5:44 PM

Rex really wasn’t bad yesterday. He threw the one killer INT in the red zone, and other than that he was fine. The other INT was Hank’s fault when he fell down.

Of course, the only reason to watch the Skins the rest of the year (Hankerson) is now out for the season. Why wouldn’t he be.

  35. jacunn2000 says: Nov 14, 2011 5:51 PM

Say what you will about Dallas, and J Jones, but I don’t think he would ever let this mess fly.

  36. bucks12965 says: Nov 14, 2011 6:20 PM

Could anyone really blame Snyder if he fired Shanahan tonight?

I wouldn’t do it, just because he’s owed so much $. But seriously, this guy is just a bad head coach.

  37. willcool21 says: Nov 14, 2011 6:21 PM

  38. dontrunfromme says: Nov 14, 2011 6:27 PM

Boller will be available next year. He’s impressive too. Wow the skins will be awesome with him. The skins future is really bright. So much talent. Not

  39. blackqbwhiterb says: Nov 14, 2011 6:29 PM

Helu has a big game- let’s run Torain all day…Beck stopped taking sacks and started to get rid of the ball- start Grossman……….3rd and 2, a QB who everyone knows is unreliable- throw a slant. Ends up a sack knocking them out of field goal range…..brilliance, it never stops.

  40. mogogo1 says: Nov 14, 2011 6:53 PM

Debating whether Grossman stinks less than Beck is missing the point–They’re both on the team only because the Shanahans thought they could play.

Kyle Shanahan thought Beck was a such a surefire hit he actually said if he’d been running a team he’d have used a top 10 pick to select Beck. Which helps explain why Kyle Shanahan will never run an NFL team. He shouldn’t be coordinating one, either, but when Daddy is in charge, you catch some pretty big breaks.

  41. cannonballdookie says: Nov 14, 2011 7:37 PM

So in other words, John Beck will start next week.

  42. lifetimeskinsfan739 says: Nov 14, 2011 7:52 PM

Anyone who really thinks they’re compairable or Beck played better simply hasnt actually watched the two play. Rex actually moves the ball, Beck was horrible. Only one of those two picks yesturday was actually Rex’s fault. He is significantly better then Beck (for whatever thats worth).

  43. prior0knowledge says: Nov 14, 2011 7:59 PM

What does it mean to “stake my reputation” that a player is good?

I think it means that if you are proven wrong, then you admit that your reputation is poor. What reputation? The reputation that you can evaluate players (or at least QBs).

Admit it Shanny. Admit to the world that you are not a good talent evaluator. Give the job to Bruce.

  44. Always On Slightly Off says: Nov 14, 2011 8:36 PM

Hello (Herm Edwards Voice). There were a lot of things that was pretty good yesterday. We have a lot of pieces on defense and the draft should be nothing but offense. Why is nobody talking about Perry Riley? Dude played really well! Way to wear that 56.

  46. thatdudewiththemarauder says: Nov 14, 2011 8:48 PM

Shanahan: “John! It’s Mike Shanahan! How ya doin’ buddy!?!?”
    Elway (cringing): “Oh, hello Mike.”
Shanahan: “Great to talk to you! Say, see any Redskins games this year?”
    Elway: “Um, no.”
Shanahan: “Yeah, well, see, I was wondering John, what was it I used to do that used to make you play so well back in the day?”
    Elway: “Absolutely nothing.”
Shanahan: “Yeah…yeah. That’s what I was afraid of. Nice to hear-”
    Elway: -click-

Yeah, I keep hearing this and it just isn’t true. Allen and Shanahan gutted the team, and the backups are even worse than what Zorn had. How does that prove they inherited anything? It
s their roster, handpicked, through free agency.

I sure for one am glad Andre Carter got let go so he could have a career game on Sunday, and Carlos Rogers went on to have a career year with San Fran.

I would say this franchise had no idea how to judge talent, but this year’s draft picks look like they may pan out.

  61. souldogdave says: Nov 15, 2011 7:14 AM

49ers had Montana and Young, so that’s bs. I am re-posting since you deleted the last one. Shanarat has neither QB, stuck with dogs.Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  62. dukemarc says: Nov 15, 2011 12:19 PM

  63. dirtydrynn27 says: Nov 15, 2011 1:35 PM
