I've never been so embarrassed to be a Colts fan. Here we have the team President openly discussing drafting a player in NEXT year's draft. A draft that is several months away. With SIX games left to play. Polian should be concerned with so many other things before who to draft, not the least of which is winning a game THIS SEASON. How shameful to admit that you're so comfortable with the idea of being the worst team in the NFL.

I tell you another thing Polian should be considering: retirement. Or taking your family act to another organization. I don't care how many Executive of The Year Awards you've won, I will remember how you encouraged NOT trying to win, not trying to go 16-0, and now embracing the loser mentality. Your reputation is forever tarnished in my eyes and in the eyes of many Colts fans. Begone.

jm91rs says: Nov 15, 2011 12:10 PM

This is such a no brainer it shouldn’t even be discussed. Look at the teams that had backup plans (SanFran with Montana and Young, Green Bay with Favre and Rodgers), then look at the teams that rode their Franchise QBs all the way into retirement (Buffalo with Jim Kelly, Dallas with Aikman, Denver with Elway and Miami with Marino). Which team would you rather be?

Draft luck, sit him for a year (if peyton is healthy). In year 2 if Luck is ready, trade peyton.

If the Raiders gave up 2 high picks for Carson Palmer, someone will surely give up a 1 or 2 for 3-4 years of Peyton Manning.

I agree with you for the most part, but I probably wouldn't bank on finding another team as dumb as the Raiders.

You take your chance with Luck if you have the 1st pick. He has the least chance of failure of any QB prospect in a long time. Luck is better than Curtis Painter already. You don’t go around chasing after other teams rejects like Miami has done since Marino retired.

---------------------------------------
Unfortunately some POS franchise is unequivocally tanking their season so we dont have that luxury of drafting that surefire prospect. The players may not be tanking but if the owners tell the coaches to make sure not to win any games or your fired what will you do?Draw up some of the worst game planning and stick with your crappy players ( Painter)

The Colts should have their games cancelled for the rest of the year and be forced to play Appalachian State,Western Illinois,etc At least It would be funny to watch them beat the colts 28-3 every week.

Seroiusly institute a draft Lotto and move the colts to the Canadian Football league for 3 years as punishment.

...So, if the Colts trade away the #1 pick, they’d be choosing to go with an aging QB who has developed serious physical issues the past couple of years and put him behind a bad O-line. Not exactly a move that would likely bode well for their future.

I think any theories about draft maneuvering are necessarily predicated on the Colts' having an opportunity to evaluate Manning's health prior to the trades. Obviously, if Manning can't go, the Colts need to commit to the best qb available... i.e. Luck. Although, I'm not sure that I don't like a couple of other qb's better, and the Colts could get a windfall by trading the #1 overall.

So what do the Colts do if Luck doesn’t declare for the draft in January? Everyone is presuming he will leave school a year early for the NFL. He may have all the tools, but it’s no forgone conclusion he’s entering the draft.
-- -- --
Yes, it is. He redshirted his freshman year. Been in school 4 years, ready to graduate and he's even said himself 4 years in school is enough.

My question is if Carson is worth a 1 and a 2 (MAYBE two 1s), how much is Manning worth...?

There is no world in which drafting Luck is not the right move.
_________________________

That is an overstatement. This is, by all accounts, one of the deepest qb classes in recent history. Luck is the consensus top-prospect, but there are a handful of other guys that could have great NFL careers. Given the depth and breadth of the Colts needs (which is evident with Peyton on the sidelines), one could reasonably argue that trading the top pick for a couple of 1st-rounders and a handful of 2d/3d round picks makes a lot of sense for this team.

Not sure why this is even a story. Does it seem realistic Manning will be the quarterback for the Colts for the rest of time? At some point the team would have to draft someone who will be the future of the franchise. Only question is what will happen if Andrew Luck can’t cut it in the NFL. Listening to the college football experts squee on a player doesn’t mean the guy will even start in the big leagues.

Do you conspiracy theorists really believe the Colts are intentionally tanking this season? Peyton is hurt. Melvin Bullit is out for the season, as is Gary Brackett. The O-Line has had to deal with many injuries and shuffling. The Colts are a veteran team with far too much pride to tank a season for a kid still in college.
================================
Most of us don’t believe the Colts players are trying to lose. But management and ownership have not made any effort to salvage the season. They signed a retired over-the-hill quarterback while a decent David Garrard was available. The division is so poor that it’s always winnable. Now Houston doesn’t have a quarterback. Polian really had no interest in this season once Manning went down.

Under normal circumstances, I agree that players should play and GMs should GM, and never the twain should meet. But this is far from a normal circumstance. If you are considering drafting a replacement for the unquestioned leader of, and best player on, your team, and you want that player to mentor the replacement, as the Colts undoubtedly would like to have happen, it only makes sense to find out what the player thinks about that before you decide what to do with the pick, and with the player.

And it's totally mindless for some folks to trash an organization that has registered double-digit wins every year for most of the last decade, and that has been run, and is now advised, by a guy (Bill Polian)who built Super Bowl teams with three franchises (Buffalo, Carolina and Indy), and who has forgotten more about running an NFL team than anyone who posts here will ever know.

Whoa, whoa, whoaaaa. The Colts didn't Suck 4 Luck. They just Suck. This team would have at least 6 wins right now if Manning were playing. This is pretty much the same team that went 10-6 last year, sans Manning. Not their fault Manning was injured, they built a team that would thrive with Manning and fail without. Manning's been durable his entire career, just this one year he's been out. This could've happened any year, just dumb luck it happened when Luck was coming out.

================================
Most of us don't believe the Colts players are trying to lose. But management and ownership have not made any effort to salvage the season. They signed a retired over-the-hill quarterback while a decent David Garrard was available. The division is so poor that it's always winnable. Now Houston doesn't have a quarterback. Polian really had no interest in this season once Manning went down.

So what do the Colts do if Luck doesn’t declare for the draft in January? Everyone is presuming he will leave school a year early for the NFL. He may have all the tools, but it’s no forgone conclusion he’s entering the draft.
================================

And that is why I gave you a thumbs up. Luck has another year of eligibility and could either force a deal or stay in school. What is the difference between staying in school, playing another year with a huge insurance policy, and sitting on the bench behind Manning for who knows how many years? If Manning is healthy, there is no reason he's not the starter in Indy for the next 3-4 years. This is a tough situation for Indy.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Colts get Luck and watches Manning for a season.

Manning is traded to an NFC team in 2013. A team that loves having veteran QBs instead of developing their own. A team that Manning can promote since they are in a new city, LA!

Welcome to the Vikings Peyton!!

I have to agree with other posters. It's outrageous for any player on the Colts to say they are trying to win games -- they are the biggest laughingstock of a team I've seen in years. Yes, they miss Peyton on offense tremendously; however, what about their sorry defense? Manning doesn't play defense, so what's their excuse on the other side of the ball? I wouldn't want to play for a team that's obviously tanking this year and not trying to win!

This is such a no brainer it shouldn't even be discussed.
