This is such a no brainer it shouldn’t even be discussed. Look at the teams that had backup plans (SanFran with Montana and Young, Green Bay with Favre and Rodgers), then look at the teams that rode their Franchise QBs all the way into retirement (Buffalo with Jim Kelly, Dallas with Aikman, Denver with Elway and Miami with Marino). Which team would you rather be?

Draft luck, sit him for a year (if peyton is healthy). In year 2 if Luck is ready, trade peyton.

If the Raiders gave up 2 high picks for Carson Palmer, someone will surely give up a 1 or 2 for 3-4 years of Peyton Manning.

Unfortunately some POS franchise is unequivocally tanking their season so we dont have that luxury of drafting that surefire prospect. Seroiusly institute a draft Lotto and move the colts to the Canadian Football league for 3 years as punishment.

If you don’t know the answer to this, then you must not follow the game very closely.

…So, if the Colts trade away the #1 pick, they’d be choosing to go with an aging QB who has developed serious physical issues the past couple of years and put him behind a bad O-line. Not exactly a move that would likely bode well for their future.

I think any theories about draft maneuvering are necessarily predicated on the Colts’ having an opportunity to evaluate Manning’s health prior to the trades. Obviously, if Manning can’t go, the Colts need to commit to the best qb available… i.e. Luck. Although, I’m not sure that I don’t like a couple of other qb’s better, and the Colts could get a windfall by trading the #1 overall.

My question is if Carson is worth a 1 and a 2 (MAYBE two 1s), how much is Manning worth…?

There is no world in which drafting Luck is not the right move.

That is an overstatement. This is, by all accounts, one of the deepest qb classes in recent history. Luck is the consensus top-prospect, but there are a handful of other guys that could have great NFL careers. Given the depth and breadth of the Colts needs (which is evident with Peyton on the sidelines), one could reasonably argue that trading the top pick for a couple of 1st-rounders and a handful of 2d/3d round picks makes a lot of sense for this team.

You take your chance with Luck if you have the 1st pick. He has the least chance of failure of any QB prospect in a long time. Luck is better than Curtis Painter already. You don’t go around chasing after other teams rejects like Miami has done since Marino retired.

And it’s totally mindless for some folks to trash an organization that has registered double-digit wins every year for most of the last decade, and that has been run, and is now advised, by a guy (Bill Polian)who built Super Bowl teams with three franchises (Buffalo, Carolina and Indy), and who has forgotten more about running an NFL team than anyone who posts here will ever know.

Why not? Holding the clipboard for a few seasons worked out fine for Aaron Rodgers.

And that is why I gave you a thumbs up. Luck has another year of eligibility and could either force a deal or stay in school. What is the difference between staying in school, playing another year with a huge insurance policy, and sitting on the bench behind Manning for who knows how many years? If Manning is healthy, there is no reason he’s not the starter in Indy for the next 3-4 years. This is a tough situation for Indy.

Colts get Luck and watches Manning for a season.
