Lost in the launch of the lockout on March 11 was the news that long-time NFL agent Gary Wichard died that same day from complications of pancreatic cancer and diabetes. Wichard’s client list included a cluster of big names, including Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney, Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, and Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs.

Per a league source, Suggs has now hired Joel Segal to be his agent.

Suggs had yet to hire a new agent following the passing of Wichard, who negotiated a big-money deal for Suggs in July 2009 that in many respects was better than the smoke-and-mirrors $100 million contract that Albert Haynesworth had signed with the Redskins earlier that year.

Wichard’s estate will continue to earn the fees generated by all contracts he negotiated, which is the only fair and proper approach. Segal will be eligible for fees only if/when Suggs does a new contract.
