After starting 0-7, Dolphins talking about ending up 9-7

The Miami Dolphins are talking about the playoffs. Seriously.

After losing their first seven games, the Dolphins have now won two in a row, and some players in the Dolphins’ locker room think there’s still an opportunity for this team to be playing meaningful games in January.

We win ’em all and we’re in playoff contention,” Dolphins defensive end Jared Odrick told the Palm Beach Post.

Dolphins linebacker Karlos Dansby noted that he was on the 2008 Cardinals, who went 9-7 in the regular season and ended up in the Super Bowl.

“We’ve got an opportunity to be great,” Dansby said. “I went to the Super Bowl at 9-7, so it can be done.”

The reality is that six of the Dolphins’ seven remaining games are against teams with winning records, and they’re more likely to lose them all and finish 2-14 than they are to win them all and finish 9-7. But the Dolphins are thinking big.

Don’t hold your breath on this happening!

  2. nflfollower says: Nov 17, 2011 12:59 PM

Good for them. It’s the right attitude and belief, but even a winning team shouldn’t look quite that far ahead.

  3. pastabelly says: Nov 17, 2011 1:02 PM

They may not be sucking for Luck anymore. But they still suck.

  4. bossplayer213 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:05 PM

    lol

  5. jnbnet says: Nov 17, 2011 1:05 PM

I wouldn’t hold my breath, but I do give them credit for not rolling over.

As unrealistic as going 9-7 seems, it is even more unrealistic to think that a 9-7 record will garner them a playoff spot. The Jets and Pats have it easy the rest of the way and should take 1 division spot and 1 wildcard spot. The Ravens/Bengals (or both if the Jets can’t close it out) and Steelers will likely take another division spot and another wildcard spot, thereby taking Miami out of their playoff contention pipedream.

It is realistic to think they could spoil the hopes of other teams, however. I don’t think they’ll finish 2-14.

Can’t wait to dash those dream Sunday.

  8. stoogy says: Nov 17, 2011 1:06 PM

  9. buffalodiehard says: Nov 17, 2011 1:07 PM

    *dreams

  10. baous says: Nov 17, 2011 1:07 PM

Laugh at them all you want, but they have the right mentality, every team should be thinking this.

  11. lonespeed says: Nov 17, 2011 1:07 PM

Unrealistic or not, thinking any other way would be unprofessional.

If they lose the next game, they should come to work with the mindset they can win the next six.

That’s how I would approach it. Don’t know how much of a roll you can get on if you don’t try.

  12. pryor4heisman says: Nov 17, 2011 1:10 PM

    playoffs… PLAYOFFS??

  13. packace says: Nov 17, 2011 1:10 PM

They dont need offense. They dont need defense. All they need is Rob Schneider. “YOU CAN DOOO IIIT!!!”

  14. whoknowsnothing says: Nov 17, 2011 1:10 PM

    Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!! Playoffs!!!!!!!!!!

  15. irishjugalo says: Nov 17, 2011 1:11 PM

There aren’t many headlines that surface about this team anymore that don’t make it harder and harder to continue to be a fan. This organization needs a bigger overhaul than the U.S. Congress.

  16. jetny says: Nov 17, 2011 1:12 PM

    hahaha

  17. pryor4heisman says: Nov 17, 2011 1:12 PM

Don’t talk about – playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?

  18. jackfnburton says: Nov 17, 2011 1:12 PM

Yeah. Sure. Why not? Maybe the Colts will win out, too.

Maybe the Packers will lose the rest of their games, the Vikings will win out and they’ll both be 9-7.

Maybe the Broncos will abandon the forward pass altogether, and still win every game from now through next October.

Yeah right. If I were the Dolphins, I would not make any travel plans for January.

  19. joetoronto says: Nov 17, 2011 1:12 PM

Unlike the Colts, the Phins have battled every game.

The Bills shouldn’t be taking them lightly, that’s for sure.

  20. silversun60 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:13 PM

    Dear Miami,

Go for it!! You can do it!!

    Sincerely,
    The Colts

  22. 7pints says: Nov 17, 2011 1:15 PM

  23. itstariq says: Nov 17, 2011 1:16 PM

    Oh. That sounds rational.

  24. miamininer says: Nov 17, 2011 1:17 PM

Dolphins can do it! They have the best linebacker in the game Karlos Dansby (Sarcastic)

  25. donz0 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:19 PM

    It’s plausible.

  26. david7590 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:20 PM

What a joke, but then again what do you expect from Gods little joke to football.

  27. sterilizecromartie says: Nov 17, 2011 1:20 PM

How hilarious would it be if they actually did win 9 straight but still missed the playoffs?

  28. finsuppatsdown says: Nov 17, 2011 1:23 PM

Good for them. This is the attitude the team should have. No team will win if they don’t believe they can win every week. Although I admit that winning 9 games in a row with their scheduale seems like wishfull thinking, it is possible if the team continues to play at the level they have played the last couple of weeks ( I won’t be placing any beats on them to do it though…lol). After all, even when the Fins were loseing, they were not really out of any of those games. They also have four division games remaining. Anyone who knows the AFC East knows no game is a lock in that division. Keep up the good work and the right attitude! Go Fins.

  29. marcuswelby70 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:36 PM

11-5 will win the AFC East, 10-6 MIGHT get a wild card. 9-7 not happening.

  30. skinstwin says: Nov 17, 2011 1:42 PM

any team would feel great after playing the redskins.

    __
Yet every single one of them is getting paid to live the dream…unlike you loser New England sports fans who have to live vicariously through others. Kudos to the Fins players for not giving up!

  34. mvpolamalu says: Nov 17, 2011 1:46 PM

Only in the nfc west can that happen

  35. cannonballdookie says: Nov 17, 2011 1:46 PM

  36. finsuppatsdown says: Nov 17, 2011 1:47 PM

    @ sterilizecromartie:

Almost as hilarious as when the Pats went 11-5 and missed the playoffs.

  37. schmokes says: Nov 17, 2011 1:47 PM

They have a better chance than the eagles.

  38. blaz0037 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:51 PM

Any Colts fan hoping for Andrew Luck is a complete intellectual dunce. Spoiled for so many years by Peyton, and now they want his replacement?

Can we even call these types of people football fans. Its Peyton Manning!! He has several more good years left!!!

Go ahead, draft Luck, run Peyton out of town and see what happens.

  39. norseyapper says: Nov 17, 2011 1:52 PM

Ok, so that’s kind of a stupid thing to say. But even when that team was losing through Sept. & Oct. they seemed to play hard.
Everyone thinks Sparanno is toast, and I suppose he is, but at least his team never rolled over or turned on each other.

  40. nesportsfan0428 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:53 PM

This is a team that brings it every week, and at the very least, make their games exciting to watch (cough cough Colts, cough cough Vikings, ultra-hacking cough Browns,)

They may not make the playoffs because of being in the AFC east, but at least they can relish the “spoiler” role. At some point they’re going to get a franchise quarterback and be extremely dangerous.

  41. skeefe1976 says: Nov 17, 2011 1:53 PM

Mercury Morris must have given them a pep talk lately…

  42. lookatthefarside says: Nov 17, 2011 1:54 PM

  46. skins23 says: Nov 17, 2011 2:10 PM

Please do, I’d love to leap you in draft position since we both need QBs.

  47. fitzmagic1212 says: Nov 17, 2011 2:10 PM

sorry but after sunday you will have 8 losses.

  48. schmitty2 says: Nov 17, 2011 2:25 PM

    Ray Finkle strongly disagrees

  49. jcd213 says: Nov 17, 2011 2:33 PM

This phin fan can see 6-10 as the ceiling for their season. Closing the season against the pats and jets won’t help.

  50. freebird2011 says: Nov 17, 2011 2:36 PM

There’s a greater likelihood one of the Dolphins gets shot with a BB gun and the BB causes a serious infection. Of course, some might say that’s just an old wives tale, so we’re talking impossible instead.

  51. jcd213 says: Nov 17, 2011 2:36 PM

    9-7 would be nice though

  52. Nevis says: Nov 17, 2011 2:38 PM

Almost as foolish as the Packers saying they’ll go 16-0 at 9-0.

How many times did Manning have the Colts at 9-0?

  53. promickey says: Nov 17, 2011 2:38 PM

Teams win in the NFL based on good recruiting, good players, good coaching and creative game planning. Thinking about the Miami Dolphins winning seven (7) consecutive games is delusional stuff.

  54. MadDog Rickles says: Nov 17, 2011 2:48 PM

    Lolzzzzzzzzz

  55. ecarlso8 says: Nov 17, 2011 3:09 PM

hey Karlos, you are in a big boy division now and 9-7 gets you a plane ticket home. Get ready to be run over by the Bills Mr. “best LB in the NFL”, lol

  56. boblavoie says: Nov 17, 2011 3:11 PM

Maybe, with a minor miracle, 8 and 8. There is a snow balls chance in hell (no pun intended) they will come to New England in the dead of winter and beat the Patriots. They will freeze their footballs off.

  57. dolphindad says: Nov 17, 2011 3:11 PM

thanks for embarrassing us Dolfans again guys. I have enough shame and humiliation wearing Dolphins gear this year, I dont need you making stupid claims to add to my misery. you beat the chiefs and redskins and all the sudden you are a playoff team?? what a joke. these guys are so used to losing they dont even know what it takes to win. this is really an insult to the rest of the teams on the schedule. you are basically saying you are going to beat them all. you are really going into NE and into Buffalo and winning? stay focused on losing and getting a franchise QB.

=================================An hell will start freezing over also!!!

    9 wins….bwaaahahahaha

  61. cshearing says: Nov 17, 2011 3:59 PM

Look, we all know that there is a 99.999999% probability that this does not happen. Does not change the fact that these guys are not giving up, not whining about their situation, and trying to play hard. This is what you want. I am a Dolphins fan, and I was admittedly swayed into rooting for them to lose early on (Suck for Luck). All it took was the one win for me to start cheering them on again.

  62. ch8878 says: Nov 17, 2011 4:00 PM

Give me what there drinking or smoking !!

There schedule : Buffalo Bills, @ Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, @ Buffalo Bills, @ New England Patriots, New York Jets

They might beat the Eagles but thats about it !

  63. djteknision1200 says: Nov 17, 2011 4:05 PM

I know a lot of people are just looking at their record and making comments, but has anyone actually seen how this team is playing of late. The defense hasn’t given up a touchdown in two games and the offense has finally learned how to utilize Bush. They sure gave the Giants all they could handle a few weeks ago. I don’t know about 9-7 but they are sure going to make some teams lives miserable.

  64. dolfan220 says: Nov 17, 2011 4:23 PM

I remember one season, way back when, when the fins were 9 and 0. They then last their next 7 games and didn’t make the playoffs. Who’s to say the reverse can’t happen here. In bizarro world it could.

  65. jimmysee says: Nov 17, 2011 5:04 PM

9-7 would be a remarkable turnaround!

  66. vipod4ever says: Nov 17, 2011 6:36 PM

good on them…the right attitude, the right approach, just the wrong reality.

  67. jcg23 says: Nov 17, 2011 8:23 PM

After Thanksgiving it will be thinking about 8 and 8 Heck, after Sunday then come Thursday 7 and 9!!

  68. FinFan68 says: Nov 17, 2011 10:12 PM

The Dolphins have been in every game this year. They should have beaten the Browns and the Broncos and had opportunities in other games. They have finally figured out how to use Bush somewhat effectively and the defense has stopped their mental mistakes and returned to last year’s top 5-6 form. Winning the rest of the games is very doubtful but I wouldn’t want them to have any other attitude right now. They will not be an easy win for anyone. Confidence is contagious and they have nothing to lose by going all-out.
